The Expendables 2 - Part 2

Just saw this tonight and honestly I am underwhelmed but still like it, as well as the first movie( if that makes sense). First, I know people don't go into movies like this for the story, but the story was down right garbage. Secondly, I was hoping the scenes with Sly, Arnold, Bruce, Chuck, Van Damm near the end would be more epic but it was just okay ( kinda anti climatic). Lastly, majority of the one liners fell flat and were cringe worthy. The only really good ones was the chuck Norris and the snake one, and the group conversation and what they would have as a last meal.

Also it's pretty obvious that this movie was originally a pg-13 movie and they just added more blood to make it an R rating in post production. And this movie is extremely short. But all that aside, this is still a fun action movie and the cast and action scenes are the draw here, for those two reasons alone, I give it a 7.5/10.

This film really delivers. I thought I got my money's worth in the first ten minutes. That was a grand opening. The story was decent enough. I orignally hated the idea of Liam Hemsworth but his importance to the story made this a much better film. I probably would have sought out a more well known actress for the girl part but she held her own. The only weak part of the film for me was the dialogue. There were some funny lines and I liked the conversation in the abandoned house. However the scenes with Stallone and Willis felt flat.
There's a lot of characters but they all made the most of their screentime. Chuck Norris was hilarious. It was great seeing Arnold back on screen. Unfortunately he isn't very mobile but he still has the charisma. I would of liked to see more Jet Li but his going on hiatus didn't hurt the film. Also I wanted more of JCVD. The end fight was awesome. I really want there to be an Expendables 3 but it's going to be difficult to top this one.

Yeah Arnold appeared to show his age the most out all of the guys.

Overall it was a good doesn't take itself too serious over the top action film. On a sidenote wouldn't the [BLACKOUT]chuck norris cameo[/BLACKOUT] have been so much more powerful had we not known he was in the movie the whole time and featured on the posters/trailers etc?

I mean it worked great but it would have been even more epic.

Bruce Malone, I agree but in this day and age there's no way you can hide things like that.

I mean even the Thanos rumors were out there pre-Avengers.

Estimated $28 million for the weekend. Deserved to overtake the first one.

This film was fun! In fact it should have been the first one. I'm sure it's weekend box office is hurt majorly by how crappy that first film was(also by this seasons late summer comp).

Van Dame is so rarely a villain that it adds extra umph to this appearance in this. I hope they do that again next time, with say Clint or something. Also, West really show cased that awesome stamp Statham has on action(he really is something special). If only his fight with Atkins had more build up and was more featured(I spent the entire time anticipating it).

I do think the film's formula could be improved in several ways.
Like avengers, these characters(actors in this case) all have their built in fans, so the meetings should be plotted with a lot more weight. Weather they be fighting each other or some other thing. But to simply have them just riding together seems like a waste. Speaking of which I would love to see tension build along the way to the point of confrontation. They did a bit of this last time with Li but it really could be stronger.
Funny enough I still think Fast Five did the meeting of action icons better than anything in this series.

Secondly I would hope for some more role specific team dynamics. Kinda like Oceans. A team of specialist is brought together to do what they do best. Not just all charge in shooting.

Lastly the girl did a good job but just like Crews and a few of the other's she just shouts of compromise. I would have loved to see Michelle Yeoh, or Ziyi or that ilk.

I will say VanDame really delivered here. He's the one old dude outside of Stallone that performed in this as he had done in the 90's. Let's face it, this isn't the Arnold that took down the predator.

You know Van Damme was enjoying himself. It took him back to his golden years.

Van dam was under used in my opinion. He was a good villian, but due to the terrible story/script his character was medicore. I mean what was is ultimate plan, his motivation? It was never really explained.

And yea, Arnold was rusty here, his comedic timing and acting was kinda off. The more I think about this movie the more disapointed I get... :(. Given the cast and stuff I just expected more. Can't really explain it. But I am a action movie fan so I still like it but I wouldn't say this is a great movie but it's just an okay movie. Why did I set my expectations so high.........

This movie deserved more than a 28 million opening...

:(

Maybe a lot of people were as disappointed as I am, by the first Movie. I know I wasn't looking forward to see the sequel. I'm only deciding to go because everyone here says how fun it is.

Cant wait to see Jean Claude on Black Eagle/No Retreat, No Surrender/Double Impact bad guy territory again. Plays the villain so well.

I figured they were going to try and pull some kind of romance subplot with Barney and Maggie but fortunately they chose to not go that route. Way too cliche. And 80s. :oldrazz:

Articles like that are a load of bollocks, what do people expect them to look like when they get old??
No shame in getting old and letting yourself go a bit. However, guys like Stallone have also gotten old and kept in great shape.

Awesome movie...way better then the original, but the characters from the 1st do get to shine again. Stallone, Norris, Arnold, van damme , dolph, all shine.

I saw it last night and thought it was awesome! It was far better than the first and this film actually felt like a throw back to the 80's action films we all loved.

Chuck Norris' scene was my favorite part. Well done with the tongue planted firmly in the cheek. Van Damme was quite good as the main antagonist. I was surprised at how well he actually acted. He could have been used more, but he did great with the time he was given.

Hopefully this film has good legs and does well on the DVD market to warrant a 3rd film. I suspect the "meh" reaction the the first film and the fact this film was rated R hampered it's BO opening. The audience I was with seemed to like it a good bit.

If there is a 3rd film, Kurt Russell is a must for long-time fans. He'd probably be excellent for the new villian. Wesley Snipes and Mel Gibson would be great too. If they want to attract some younger fans, The Rock or Vin Diesel would be wise to bring in.

The more people you have they less they do. If they aren't on the back burner like Coture, then they literally walk in and out and in again like Norris(and the others), which can be fine but I think the alternative would be better.

A rotating cast. I like the idea of Russell I also like Snipes. Stallone has a good relationship with both of them(from previous films) and he's pretty much the producer here so...
What really really worked well was when the villain was reveled to be "this freaking dude" as opposed to the loblaws no name products of the first film. Cast your villain(s) right and that's the first step.

No shame in getting old and letting yourself go a bit. However, guys like Stallone have also gotten old and kept in great shape.

I always cut the Austrian Oak some slack on that front - i mean, he was never going to be able to train as hard after his heart operation years back. That and his political career took a real toll on his shape. No arguement, Sly looks great, but he takes HGH and still trains like a beast.

Does anyone else thing Expendables 3 should be the last? I want to see some of the main characters die.

I'm pretty sure you're in the minority on that one because I seriously doubt anyone else would want to see any of these guys die in the next film. The whole point of this series is to see these guys getting together and kicking ass.

This isn't meant to build up to some emotional climax in the 3rd film where lives are lost and they give their lives to save the world.

This is light, cheesy, throwback entertainment.

As long as they're profitable for the studio, there is no reason they cannot make more. Anymore than 3 will probably be tiresome though.

Well, the actors aren't getting younger. And I want to see some of them go out while they are still in shape.
