The Family Dynamic

I'm gonna pass, if only because I'm tired of...

A. Nuclear family superhero teams. You never see family teams featuring a single mom and 2 kids, or a group of cousins.

Actually, this isn't just about the four family members we've unveiled so far and, in fact, there's a grandfather, aunt (who's a single mom), and cousins in the mix.

B. Earth/Fire/Wind/Water elemental teams. Why doesn't someone try a different elemental grouping? Chinese (Earth/Fire/Wood/Metal)? The Japanese 5th element of void/heaven? The 36 Shaivite-Hindu tattvas?[/quote]

If you read the article, you'll see mention of the Wu Xing Clan of China. We actually get into the Asian concepts of the elements a bit, including the Void, and also experiment with combining powers.

As for the "point" of setting a superhero book outside of the DCU, well, one of the joys of a creator-owned project is that you get to choose whether or not you want your characters meeting up with Superman or having some other writer ten years from now have an evil clone of Superman kill your character ;)

I hope you'll all at least flip through the book on the stands when it comes out...

OGOD WHAT DO WE DO NOW :(

I totally take back what I said about poor people, by the way.

Don't try to make yourself look better because important people are watching. :o

Anyway, given that I was on the fence about this before, since Mr. Torres took the time to stop by, create an account for himself, and post in our little world, I'll probably pick up the first issue or two. Continuity is kind of a dumb reason to stay away from a series, especially since I'm reading a ton of other creator-owned stuff now anyway. It'll feel kind of awkward reading creator-owned stuff under DC and having it cordoned off from the DC universe at large, but I'll see how it goes.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Poor people still suck.

Why would anyone choose to be a poor person? That's silly and you're silly.

Social denigration is the only thing that can let me feel anything anymore:(.

I still aint got no money, so I can't pick this up.

Hmm you know what.

If I can justify buying crap like Countdown and Countdown to Adventure. I can get my budget to cover a mini that actually looks fun, different and enjoyable.

Just wait for "J. Torres" to end up being a completely random dude in Norway who just entirely reversed three peoples' positions on this mini.

LOL

No, it's really me. And to prove it, watch for a ComicBloc interview I just did to be posted in the next week or two. No one else knows about that :cwink:

Depends on whether or not you'd count the Challengers of the Unknown as DC's FF, or possibly the Doom Patrol.
Wait...what? The X-Men were ripped off Doom Patrol, which may be where your confusion comes from. But make no mistake, Doom Patrol's got jack-squat in common with Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four always were and continue to be boring and bland. The Doom Patrol were the first team with a personality.

I'm probably not going to pick it up anyway, my funds are rather tight - but I don't think DC have ever done the family superhero team really well (apart from Flash right now) and I just basically thought after reading through that it would be a nice addition to the DCU.
JLA Pain of the Gods was generally mediocre, but I would have liked to see something done with the family in that one.

See, your raging bias is almost cute. I don't have anything against Doom Patrol, but there's a reason they don't have even a fraction of the popularity and profitability of the Fantastic Four.

First of all, never said anybody ripped anybody off. The Doom Patrol and the X-Men came out at pretty much the same time. I picked the Doom Patrol because they were more of a family than a Superteam. Much like the FF. The only thing they have in common with the X-Men was their freaks saving the lives of those that fear them thing. I mean, can they not be similar to both? I've always felt Robot man and the Thing where very similar characters. I bet they'd be an awesome sight to see out having a beer and a pint of wd40 at a bar.

Also, you have no idea what you're talking about the. The FF rocks.

Well, looks like I may have room after all. Bruce Jones is taking over Checkmate, and i'll be damned if i'm gonna read any more s**t he's gonna write.

There's a reason I developed such a raging bias.

The same reason The Magnetic Fields don't have a fraction of the popularity and profitability of The Killers.

X-Men came out a couple months later, which was in those days enough time for Stan Lee to rip off the concept and water it down enough for mainstream consumption and put it out on the market.

I won't argue that point. Thing is the only character in the FF with more than an ounce of personality.

Bland, boring, Stan Lee dreck.

Yes, and the reason is called "popularity and profitability." The FF are more accessible and interesting to pretty much 99.99% of the planet, which includes people who actually read comic books. This isn't some up for debate, "oh people are stupid and will always buy trash" logic; this is looking at the iconic namesakes of one of the most recognized superheroes on the planet versus a team absolutely no one can even name the members of and hasn't had a series for three years. When was the last time you bought a Doom Patrol book?
