The Fast and the Furious: Hobbs and Shaw

I sat through only one Fast and Furious movie and will offer to referee a basketball game between the NBA and the KKK before I sit through another two hours of listening to Vin Diesel mumble bout family ever again...
...BUT, I loved this flick! Physics didn't always apply; but, that's OK for me. I grew up on Stallone and Schwarzenegger 80's flicks and that's what this was. It was Tango and Cash on steroids and it was great!

$180 mil WW without China and a few minor markets is very decent.

It's not like they're gonna suddenly stop the franchise even if it does fall short.

Didn't Jumanji start relatively slow as well?

We’re definitely spoiled if a 60M opening is thought of as slow.

Can anyone name one spinoff that opened higher than the franchise it came from?

Box Office: 'Hobbs & Shaw' Opens With Strong $181 Million Worldwide Weekend
The Hobbit? Minions? Origins Wolverine definitely opened higher than X1 and X2, but yeah its a rare feat.

I saw the film a few hours ago and idk, it didn't really wow me. Like its serviceable and the action was good... but after the last four FF movies, I need more an average film from this franchise to get me excited for more. I wish Vanessa had more action and the other woman poster didn't really have an action scene. And with the cast this small, I thought they would have gotten like really fierce action scenes, but it was just the guys that got the real action. The villain was superhuman, no pun intended which I kinda liked but a bit underdeveloped in my opinion. And even though the action sequences are quite good, I kinda felt numb after seeing it. It definitely has that spin off feeling that is a side dish but not the main course, if that makes sense.

But that was released in the holidays season. Box office mojo stated, that iF this spin off has the same multiplier as F8, it would get 140 million which is lower than F1's domestic gross.

You can't get those kind of legs in the Summer. You can still get some good legs, as August is looking fairly open. And unless it completely bombs in China, I think they will be willing to bet on sequel growth.

I can definitely see Hobbs and Shaw getting a sequel after this

I hope it gets a sequel. 2 hrs of pure darn fun. Also as a wrestling fan i loved how many WWE references there were here.

Sheer goofball entertainment. The trailers pretty much gave you every major set piece so no unexpected thrills. A couple of nice cameos doesn't do much to elevate this above "a nice action-comedy".

6.5/10

Apparently, working on this film has given Roman Reigns that "Hollywood itch" he wants to scratch.

Hey go for it is what I'd say to that. Why not? Him being in this and doing a lot of his moves was pretty cool. Also i just dig that out of all of Dwayne's movie characters Hobbs is the most like The Rock. Even using lines I've heard him use on tv.

Not really. Only if you want to see why they hate each other.

Another plot point that bothered me.

How can they be on the run as terrorists? They were literally commissioned by the CIA. You’re telling me Ryan Reynolds character couldn’t have cleared it up?

They weren't really supposed to be on the grid technically. And that Eteon setup pretty much sounds like they were above the government of any country.

Plus we'd probably like him more in the movies than in WWE....case in point, David Bautista.

Tango and Cash on steroids is a great way to put it!

Also, I'd LOVE to see a spin-off of this starring the two big cameos in their own buddy cop movie!

I think it is completely plausible for the Just Cause movie to be made after seeing this thing. The writer of John Wick is already penning it, may as well get this director and complete the set.
LOL...I was watching this and thought it felt like a live action videogame

Start your engines and get ready for the Fast & Furious spin off franchise !!

PRAISE:

With these type of buddy movies you basically get two people that get on each's nerves or they just cant stand each other .I would say Hobbs & Shaw are right in the middle of the aforementioned.
The film presents super-villain Brixton (Idris Elba), the “black Superman.” and agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and master criminal/spy Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham)
One of the best things about the movie are the put down banter between the two.I actually laughed out loud several times as the two relentlessly spit out insults.
The actors have charisma and then some.I could tell Elba was having a great time sharing the screen with them.
As Deckard Shaw’s sister, Hattie Vanessa Kirby strikes a nice lovely balance between the two.
Some of the story threads were fun to follow .The film add some heart around it's edges.
I found myself slapping my knee at how man films this movie borrows from...in a good way. There were also nice nods to other action films.
I welcomed most of the over the top action.Nice semi funny guest cameos.

PROBLEMS:

I could easily pick this film apart for it's plot holes and inconsistencies in the script and visuals.
The script also goes into the repetitive zone which made the movie feel longer than its 2 hour and 15 minute run time. Some montages went on far to long.Suspension of disbelief was pushed to the limit.

All week long it has been hinted at that the F&F films will venture into space...ok sure why not...but when i left the theatre i said they might as well make the the F&F Transformers cross over movie !!

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Not really. Only if you want to see why they hate each other.

They dont even honor F8’s continuity. They were already buddies by the end of that movie (Shaw was at Dom’s cookout!) and then go back to hating each other in this movie. Whatever, just like with the Xmen movies i am completely cool with saying “F it,” to any and all continuity if it gives us a good movie and Hobbs and Shaw was delicious.

This movie to me was like a solid 6/10 "fun time at the cinema with no substance" type of movie.

What works well is the chemistry between The Rock and Statham and there's a lot of fun scenes with them having their banter, and I think the buddy-cop parts of the movie are definitely the strong points. The action is fine and the plot is borderline nonsensical but you're not gonna watch it because you expect a realistic story or anything.

Both characters had a small story/arc that I thought worked surprisingly well - The Rock embracing his family origins and I thought it was a nice touch with the daughter and how you set it up at the diner in the beginning and then the way the movie ended. Similar with Statham making peace with his sister and both of them going to see their mother at the end. Small things but with big dumb blockbuster movies it's still nice to see that those elements are present.

One thing I was slightly surprised by was early in the movie Statham's sister makes a comment to The Rock, something like "you're using all your muscles except your brain which is the important one" and I thought it would pay off in the end fight against Idris Elba that they would have to come up with some cool idea how to take him down, but nope turns out you can just defeat the bad guy by going at him at the same time. :D
