The Fast and the Furious: Hobbs and Shaw

This movie to me was like a solid 6/10 "fun time at the cinema with no substance" type of movie.

What works well is the chemistry between The Rock and Statham and there's a lot of fun scenes with them having their banter, and I think the buddy-cop parts of the movie are definitely the strong points. The action is fine and the plot is borderline nonsensical but you're not gonna watch it because you expect a realistic story or anything.

Both characters had a small story/arc that I thought worked surprisingly well - The Rock embracing his family origins and I thought it was a nice touch with the daughter and how you set it up at the diner in the beginning and then the way the movie ended. Similar with Statham making peace with his sister and both of them going to see their mother at the end. Small things but with big dumb blockbuster movies it's still nice to see that those elements are present.

One thing I was slightly surprised by was early in the movie Statham's sister makes a comment to The Rock, something like "you're using all your muscles except your brain which is the important one" and I thought it would pay off in the end fight against Idris Elba that they would have to come up with some cool idea how to take him down, but nope turns out you can just defeat the bad guy by going at him at the same time. :D

Can I just say, that end fight made me so happy. During the third act set piece i kept thinking, “they cannot end this movie without giving us a two on one showdown.” And sure enough they did and I lovedddd it.

Now I'm pretty sure that mysterious voice was supposed to be him. Hell, it very well could be him uncredited.

Also, if you guys are looking for a new playlist to workout/ exercise out to, Tyler Bates’ score is BADASS. Every track is just pure nitro-infused adrenaline.

I spent the entire movie expecting a return of Owen Shaw, was he sent back to prison like his mother after helping to rescue the baby? Then I thought I heard Deckard say he killed his brother because of the fake news. I guess it was "killed for" and I just missed the line

cameo:
While I never understood Kevin Hart as a stand up I do like him paired with The Rock , I await Central Intelligence II. I really liked his bored ex Delta Force operative Air Marshal giving his out his calling card and resume but not recognizing the world's three most wanted.

I wonder why they de-aged and recast Hobbs' daughter?

They probably don't want Hobbs to appear too old.

Plus I mean let's not ignore how a lot of these movies were set before Tokyo Drift, which came out in 2006. And then in Furious 7 in 2015 they tie back into that epilogue scene from that movie.

I felt this movie accomplished what it set out to do - 2+ hours of pure fun and ridiculousness. I mean, the mere fact that the Fast and Furious franchise now has "superhumans" is just insane in and of itself. I'm in no hurry to rewatch this nor was it one of my favorite films of the year, but I had a good time watching it.

I'm also fully on board with Vanessa Kirby as Catwoman now.

I took the “killed my brother” like as metaphorical as Shaw viewed Brixton like a brother before killing him the first time.

That's also how I saw it. He was being dramatic/metaphorical.

This movie was the most I have enjoyed Roman Reigns in a long time.

I swear every time you hear them speak you can see why Rock and Statham went off to make their own movie. Both for the money and opportunity AND because the rest of the cast is nuts. Why the heck is Michelle going after the writer of the series since the 3rd film in public? What is up with Tyrese's lack of brain cells? Jeez.

why michelle acting like chris morgan has been apart of the franchise for a cup of a coffee lol

he has written a every fast film for the past 13 years lol and is executive produced the last 2 F&F films

what a dummy

Saw it today, the film does exactly what it says on the tin, it delivers on what it promised. :D:

The film doesn't really feel connected to the main franchise, despite the first scene of Shaw in Fast 7 being really silly and the comic book style final fight between him and Dom, this is not the same sinister black ops assassin that hunted our heroes. They rework some of his backstory in a plausible enough way to clean the character up so to speak but nothing can change the fact he killed Han. Likewise Hobbs is not the Hobbs from Fast 5, the stoic, focused badass, he leans way more into his comedic side in this film and the tone overall is more action comedy including the two main cameos that are full on comedy.

If you accept the tonal iconsistency and the new high tech cult creating essentially Terminator style super soldiers and just go along for the ride, then it's bonkers fun with a lot of entertaining verbal sparring between the leads and some spectacular action sequences.

The film is called Hobbs & Shaw but it could easily be called Hobbs, Shaw and Hattie as she is every bit as involved as the two leads and has about as much screen time, she is central to the plot and holds her own in the action department, plus she plays off both Hobbs and Shaw really well with 2 very different dynamics, her accent slips a bit but that's no big deal, she's awesome.

It was a shame that the stunning Eiza Gonzalez was only in the film briefly, but now she'll be on Eteon's radar for helping Shaw and will hopefully have a bigger part in the sequel.

Idris Elba has the presence to be a credible threat to Rock and Statham and seems to relish his villain role, going all in on it, even if ultimately he's a pawn.

I did enjoy the backstory for Hobbs with him reuniting with his family, I'm guessing Rock pushed for this as you rarely see Samoan's represented onscreen and they are in full force here, Momma Hobbs is not to be trifled with. :funny:

The film is split into 3 distinct acts, each with a huge action set piece, my favourite was the one in London with the building descent followed by the awesome car chase with the McLaren 720s and the transformer motorbikes. The sequene in the Ukraine was also good and the finale on the island in Samoa was a bright contrast to the other 2 big sequences. The finale fight of Hobbs & Shaw vs Brixton is really well conceived and shot as they finally take him down as a team.

I'm guessing the voice behind Eteon is Cypher.

All in all it delivered exactly what I thought it would, plenty of action, laughs and a classic buddy duo team-up with a well matched pairing, oldschool and new school mixed together in many ways.

8/10

Cliff Curtis didn't do much in the film, but at least he's not playing a bad guy.

I've seen some people calling this movie "stupid" or "dumb" I think they missed the point or didn't watch the trailers. It obviously set out to be 2+ hours of dumb fun, lol. I got what I wanted and more or less, expected, out of it.

Maybe the Fast and Furious actors should learn from the MCU actors. The actors in the MCU always support each other in the various movies and we never hear of tension between RDJ and Chris Evans or with any of the MCU actors. They always seem to get along nicely.

I don't get why Michelle Rodriguez is bitter and offended about Chris Morgan promising justice for Han. Isn't that a good thing? He's not involved with the main series anymore but he didn't say it would happen in Fast 9 or it's sequels.

Chris Morgan wrote every film since Tokyo Drift, which introduced Han and he's writing the spin offs involving his killer. It's not like her character is connected to Han in any special way or her being best friends with Han's actor. I also read that she threaten to leave to franchise recently if there wasn't more respect for the women and so I'm also confused about that if she's talking about female characters on screen.

Tyrese..I knew it would be something dumb and salty

I thought the Rock and Vin Diesel thing was just for publicity, lol. Maybe not. Tyrese only says stupid ish because these are the only movies he does now :funny:
