The Fear Of The Wrestling Thread Is Far Greater Than The Wrestling Thread Itself - Part 151

I got a question about the ECW shows. Do they just cut out the entrances or is there some generic music dubbed over the songs?

At the time being, these are the shows I will be attending during WM30 Weekend in NOLA:
WrestleMania 30
DGUSA/Evolve
Ring of Honor
WWE Hall of Fame(first time)
Raw after Mania

Possibilities:
SHIMMER
Wrestle Con
Kaiju Big Battel Wrestling(I went to this last year for the first time in NJ and it was.....interesting to say the least.)
WrestleMania Axxess

Unrelated: Captain America: The Winter Soldier at midnight.

@ Grundy

Dubbed over of course because billionaire Vince is too much of a cheap ass to keep history intact.

- As a reminder, CM Punk will be appearing on AMC’s Talking Dead tonight at 10pm EST. The AMC website refers to him as Phil Brooks.

- Former WWE developmental talent Brett DiBiase turns 26 years old today while Ken Doane turns 28, Steve Armstrong turns 49 and Henry Godwinn turns 50.

- Mark Henry worked last night’s WWE live event in Austin, Texas, where he lives, and received a big pop. After he defeated Damien Sandow, Henry cut a promo and told fans that the rumors of his retirement are not true. Henry said he has a lot left in the tank and isn’t leaving WWE any time soon.

- It’s no secret that several traditional pay-per-view providers have been worried about losing WWE’s pay-per-view business now that the WWE Network has launched.

In Demand officials are reportedly very worried about losing WWE’s pay-per-view business due to the Network and have been thinking of ways to make up for the potential loss.

In Demand has reached out to a number of pro wrestling event producers and some indie/TV promotions that have never been on pay-per-view before, with the idea of bringing in new content, that would air taped and live, to In Demand.

- When CM Punk first walked out on WWE and the idea of Daniel Bryan vs. Triple H at WrestleMania XXX began being discussed, people in every aspect of the company did not believe that Bryan would get pushed. Something changed over the past few weeks and that was CM Punk deciding not to come back to the company.

A number of people in WWE have gone from being silent and patient when Punk first walked out to having attitudes like, “how dare he not come back and be a part of WrestleMania.”

It’s insinuated within WWE that the “Yes Movement” angle with Daniel Bryan on Monday’s RAW and some of the verbiage used was meant to be a “middle finger” to Punk and an underlying message that “this could have been you but now it won’t be.”

I bet Punk was just sitting in front of his TV stewing........:lmao: If they really think this stuff will work on him they are stupid. WWE and their hive mind just can't seem to grasp that the company and Mania are not the center of Phil Brooks universe and it's eating them up.

He's probably quite happy that at least it's Bryan getting the benefits from him walking out.

It's very old school. I'll just use NJPW as an example. Despite the roster including a number of ex-WWE superstars (Shelton Benjamin, Luke Gallows, Harry Smith, Lance Hoyt, etc) New Japan has a much greater focus on the in-ring action. It's very sports based with promo packages(every time there's a championship match, there's a brief promo package highlighting every single competitor who ever won said championship belt), national press photographers at ringside, press conferences leading up to EVERY show they produce and after etc.

All the storytelling is in the ring. Even despite the energetic foreign commentary, you're able to get a grasp on feuds and psychology pretty quickly.

I thought Shelton was pretty good in the ring.

That's interesting. That's an aspect of the business I've been noticing when looking at older NWA stuff from the 80s. It felt like more like an actual sport even with all of the pageantry.

At it's best, the ring psychology is pretty similar in my opinion. Watch the Okada vs Tanahashi series in 2013 to get a good feel for it.

At it's worst, it can be a lot of stiffing and no-selling.

Is the no-selling where the term "fighting spirit" originates from?

The biggest difference is that they don't really have characters and tend to work the bulk of their matches as athletic contests, so the story is usually a war of attrition.

In North America the psychology is greatly influenced by your character, which gives greater scope to the stories told in the ring, for instance you have a guy like Mankind who'll destroy his own body to hurt his opponent, where in contrast you have someone like Damien Sandow who will try to win using smarts and avoid pain. I think the variety of sizes and styles in the WWE melting pot broadens the match psychology options.

War of attrition? Hitting each other with as many moves as possible to bring the person down? Multiple finisher spots? Sounds like indie wrestling. That's good in doses and at the right time, but not all of the time.

If anything, Punk is probably saying, "That's what they should've done with me 2 years ago."

As noted earlier, Sting participated in a Q&A show at Camden Highlight Club in London last night. One thing worth mentioning is that Sting said that he had fond memories about the beach blonde Sting from the 1990's.

Sting also revealed that while he was in TNA, officials asked him to go back to it, but he then pointed out that he doesn't exactly have the hair to pull it off anymore.

So, Daniel Bryan vs Evolution at Wrestlemania. We need Flair to cut a promo on Bryan on RAW to top it off.

Pre-Crow Sting in '96 had black short hair,I would have liked him going back to that than Joker Sting,Keep the the medium length hair he has now but just go back to the old tights and face part from the early/mid 90's

Flair most likely will be on the Pre and post Shows then the Reunion of Evolution would be complete. Actually from what I remember Flair is a big fan of Bryan don't know if he's scripted to be but he seemed to support him when he was on the post shows before.

Pretty much, every guiy in Japan has the power to Hulk up.

Yes, most Japanese matches come down to who can take the most suplexes and lariats. That's the problem, I have with NJPW and ROH 3 hour shows, it's too much non stop hard hitting workrate, I prefer a bit of variety on a card.

If anything, Punk is probably saying, "That's what they should've done with me 2 years ago."

Yep, and Probably also shaking his head that it's taken this for WWE to finally wake up and put the machine behind Bryan.

Is the whole belief that Japan "stays silent during matches to show respect for the ring work" just a myth?

I've heard that from quite a few people but anytime I see a high profile NJPW match whether it's from the 2013, 2012 or 1984, the audience seems hot for the match.

I'm just curious of where this belief was developed because it doesnt seem to apply to NJPW main events.

No, I think it's true. Yes, when it gets to the big spots, the crowds come alive and start to go wild, but they tend to treat it more like a prestigious sporting event, where they'll cheer the competitors as they enter the ring, and clap when one pulls off an impressive move, but generally avoid the chanting and booing you might get in an American show. But it has been many years since I watched a Japanese wrestling match, so that might have changed.
