Both The Flash and Elemental would have been better off if they weren't opening in the same weekend.

And for Disney, PiXar haven't been doing all too well in the cruel summer. They probably should just abandon summer unless they have a surefire element hit.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did very well.

Box Office Theory predicting a $350-400m worldwide box office total for The Flash.

I mean, no? There are a variety of opinions over there, but most aren't even sure about the weekend yet. Most it is projecting from potential OW totals based on pre-sales, which aren't the end all be all because it's the summer, where walks ups really matter.

Charlie Jatinder, who is rarely wrong, has extrapolated the early numbers and came away with a prediction of around $350m worldwide box office total.

That's one person. You said BOT as an entity. Also Charlie, who's very good at what he does, is wrong plenty. Everyone is. Because it's not exact science, even at this point.

There is no WAY this finishes lower than freaking Black Adam. No way. If that happened the Flash is never getting another movie again.

If it turns out that Black Adam is indeed >>> The Flash in box office earnings, then I suppose The Rock’s words about the hierarchy of power changing ended up being true once again

Zaslav really thought he had the next AVATAR here. Do you think the manufactured hype turned people off in general?

I think it obviously turned off some people in the online geeksphere— people like us— but with these big tentpole movies we are but a small contingent of these box office receipts. A poor box office simply means that they couldnt get mass audiences to care about seeing this movie or even give it a chance and given the massive amount of marketing money they put into this that is incredibly alarming. Most normal folks dont know about all the “best cbm of all time” over hype stuff from the studio, they just judge these movies from trailer and tv ads and word of mouth.

The trailers for this were very well received and looked way better than Black Adam and if even that and having a well revered Batman in the movie couldnt get people to care to see this then …i just dont know. I dont know what it wouldve took to get the GA to care about seeing a Flash movie. I’m at a loss as to what went wrong here.

People just wait for streaming nowadays with very few exceptions.

Maybe The Flash as a character just isn't appealing enough as a solo property? Even The Flash (TV Series) was playing to a well primed CW audience thanks to Smallville and Arrow.

20 years ago the character would have had room to breathe on the big screen, now it feels less... special. I also think they waited too long to start the promo properly.

The big DCU announcement in January really did this years slate no favors.

They would have been better off doing a Bat-Verse movie... at least that would have gotten some butts in seats.

If this indeed flops, I think the biggest factor will simply be that audiences are DONE with the DCEU. That the well has been so poisoned that nobody wants to drink from it anymore. This won’t just be a flop, it will be the latest in a string of them. Any good will from Wonder Woman 1, and yes Aquaman, is long gone at this point.

The closest comparison would be to Dark Phoenix where audiences reached a breaking point where they made it clear they didn’t want any more of Simon Kinberg’s version of X-Men and the brand was about to be rebooted anyways. The film equivalent of a sports team playing out the string after they were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs a month ago.

I think you're on to something. Maybe the harsh reality is the Flash doesnt hold enough weight with people outside of our online geek bubble. I think the DCU announcement in January is irrelevant because, again, most non geek people dont pay attention to that stuff so i truly dont believe that your average people were turned off by that.

That or @Kahran Ramsus is right, people are just turned off by the Dceu in general.

Zaslav is a salesman and was trying to sell a product.

I have no faith in Zaslav as a studio head. He's creatively bankrupt and the DC Studios rollout has been one mistake after another.

Final tracking numbers for the 3 day weekend: $52-64m according to Box Office Theory.

most of my casual friends or family thought flash looked stupid with horrid effects.

For one thing, what was even the rush to start announcing new DC Studios projects right now? Especially when they still had a boatload of DCEU films they needed to release and sell? It was self-sabotage.

Also, they keep sending mixed signals. If this is a brand-new continuity how could you maintain any of the actors from previous films? James Gunn, bless him, is being really wishy-washy with a lot of his statements.

At the same time, I don't get how you can have your cake and eat it too. How can you keep the other DCEU actors for Waller and Peacemaker, which were both heavily tied into the DCEU, but you throw away the rest?

I think they announced the DCU in an attempt to get the stock price to go up. Looks to have been a major mistake since the stock price remained in the toilet and the announcement killed Shazam 2, The Flash and probably Aquaman 2 as well.

I mean, this movie was hardly marketed as a solo property. Batman was in all the marketing.

We just had a huge Batman release last year... I'm not sure the audience were hungry for more?

Oh, who knows, the post-mortem on this one at WB will be very interesting.
