First Class was a great movie because as you said, the talent behind the camera and script. Fox rushed production. We are extremely lucky the movie turned out to be good given the time frame it was made under. Just imagine if the release date had been pushed back a couple of months. How much more glorious could that film have been!? Just imagine!
The film exceeded most people's expectations (including mine and a lot of other comic book fans), and is one of the best-reviewed films of the year. What the hell are you really complaining about? Seriously.
"Fox doesn't have any big franchises right now!" And? Why does that matter? Why is it important of they're genuinely getting back to making good movies, not to say that they've been producing nothing but crap, compared to the other major studios, who all produce their fair amount of bad films as well.
The Twilight films make ridiculous amounts of money and the films are TERRIBLE, and the source material is TERRIBLE!!! If your argument is that "Money = Quality", you've kind of already lost that discussion.
Fox isn't in dire straits like MGM was. They're not a company felt afloat by one big franchise, and no studio should be.
And actually having seen Rise of The Planet of The Apes, I think they've got another hit on their hands for the summer, 'cause that movie is fantastic, and word-of-mouth could carry it through the rest of the month. All the "major blockbusters" films have been released already, and there's nothing left but mid-range budget films like Fright Night (also pretty damn good) and Conan.
To say nothing of what's on the horizon. Fans are finally getting their wish of Ridley Scott returning to the Alien franchise (no matter how removed it may be from what we would expect).
It just sounds like mindless dog piling on Fox for old s**t. And people will just keep on tossing out meaningless stats to prove their point.
