The General Comic Discussion Thread - Part 2

For anyone that hasn't read it DC just released a complete collection of Jeff Lemire's Terrifics run. Instocktrades has it for 40% off the cover price.

I highly recommend this. But I also recommend that you don’t stop with Lemire’s run, as Gene Luen Yang followed it up with an equally amazing second half to that series.

The whole thing was just brilliant.

Anyone read Superman: Kryptonite Spectrum #1?

Pretty great. Silver Age style zaniness with a veeeery subtle Cronenberg vibe cut by All-Star Superman. It was the favorite of my pull list the last few weeks.

I was so excited for this until the Preview.
Boy how can one Missunderstand Batman as a character so much?
Bruce believes in Redemption, second and third chances...that is one of the core reasons for his "no killing" rule.
He believes that everyone is worth saving.

How can you write him as the exact opposite, especially when its about a character who is how he is because of outside reasons?

Im having so much doubts sadly that this will be a good run.
I have to wait and see, but this preview makes me already super mad.

1. It's a first issue. These are usually written in the form of a thesis statement, painting with the usual broad strokes only to flip the thesis on its head later on.

2. The "everyone deserves a second and third chance" philosophy is an inherently flawed one in Batman comics, and that flaw feels more relevant to the last 10+ years of Batman comics. Nothing necessarily out of the ordinary. This issue handles it well.

3. Read the issue now that it's out. It's actually pretty touching.

My shop did a Midnight release for the book. Managed to score the last copy of the David Aja 1:50 variant. Matt Fraction seems to always be a very a-typical choice to write superhero comics. His voice as a writer in Batman #1 is no exception. Batman speaks like a man of the people, common, feet on the ground. With a sly sense of humor that would make Denny O'Neil smirk. This Batman is very human, casual and dare I say even approachable.

I'm not saying this issue is blowing my mind, but I was struck by how human in the whole issue felt. I'm in for the first few months atleast. Fraction is as left field a choice as Tom King ultimately was to write this character so my interest is pretty piqued.

Speaking of Mr. King, my copy of the Batman by Tom King vol. 1 omnibus came in the mail today and it is a glorious hardcover. Beautiful Clay Mann dust jacket. Unedited dialogue (they cut speech bubbles in the paperbacks), and it includes all the crossover issues (Detective, Nightwing, Flash, etc) which is something the Deluxe HC books excluded. I'm very excited to jump back into that world.

Okay, so read Batman #1 and have an Opinion if you guys want to hear it.

I throw it into Spoilers to be safe.

First and Foremost, Jorge Jimenez is as usual incredible with his art.
Im loving the visuals and the way he draws pretty much everything.
Its a beautiful issue from start to finish.
The Suit is so nice and its cool seeing Batman once in a while not just at night.

The Run starts out with now Officer Gordon and i hope that we get there some movement too.
Jim is often a casualty in the stories and has to deal with the fallout of things, which gets sidelined.
I hope Fraction doesnt forget about him and does something with his story.

I forgot that we still have the Arkham Towers...which i still find a cool idea, but i miss the Asylum.
Then we get to the Preview part and im still not sure about this all.
Zdarsky did a pretty good job at Maturing Bruce so this kind of stepping back again, it needs a crisp writing to work.
I get the idea of what Fraction is meant to say, but Bruce had changed in Zdarskys run already.
Now him being in this weird state where he questions what he always believed in because he doesnt think he can change?
I let this play out, but it will take a bit to get used to it.

Is it just me or did we have this kind of Story with the Police already recently in Nightwing?
I feel like that is a recurring storyline currently and im not sure i like it.
I like that we are back to Batman being the "enemy" of the authority, but im not liking Savages involvement..not a huge Vandal Savage fan.

So Alfred is not the AI but instead something Bruce Imagines in his head? The idea has potential, but it makes me miss Alfred even more.
Especially since Fraction writes a really enjoyable Alfred.
Im getting so worried that DC decides to keep Alfred dead or so.

Also Fraction wrote a incredible nice Interaction Between Batman and citizens in need...i really liked how that felt and how protective he wrote Batman.

I enjoyed what Fraction did here with Croc, its something nobody did before i believe.
Im always unsure what i want to be done with Croc, so pretty much anything is good i guess.
Will wait and see if more is done or if that was mainly just to get to the starting point.

Robins Suit is nice.

Overall, far stronger than i expected.
Still some things im worried about, but the Issue got me hyped for whats to come.
One thing im looking forwad is that unless i read wrong, Matt Fraction structured every issue as kind of self containing with a start, middle and end that can stand for itself.
That is something i look forward to if true...could make the storytelling incredible focused.

I end this with how i ended my Comics Week reviews, the covers.
I love of course the Basic one and most of the variant are cool too...but outside of the main one which i would go for, the Stanley Lau one is my favorite.

Looking forward to this Batman #1 hitting Infinite so I can weigh in.

You guys have my curiosity piqued.

God daaaaamn.
