Unfortunately, I missed the young Vito scenes and I think I prefer them edited between the Hyman Roth storyline as a very effective juxtaposition of social mobility and corruption

I was thinking the same thing when I watched it on HBO, but the young Vito scenes were my favorite part of Part II so it was nice seeing them edited together.

so HBO started the movie with the Deniro scenes first?

Yes, everything from The Godfather I and II was re-edited in chronological order with additional deleted scenes included. The only exception was the flashback Michael has at the end of Part II where he tells his family that he enlisted in the navy. That scene was kept where it originally was.

Driver in Carlo's Car
I saw a version on British TV years ago of the first Godfathr where, when Carlo is being killed at the end, the face of the car driver is fully visible. It was part of how shocking the scene was, as the driver looked totally bored by the whole thing and wasn't reacting to Carlo being murdered right next to him.

EVERY version I've seen since then, including YouTube clips and 1080 HD copies, has the guy cropped out. Anyone know where this can be seen?

Wow, never heard of that. TV can be weird. I remember seeing a whole Beatles people/Elvis people bit in Pulp Fiction on cable and I was surprised to see it missing from the theatrical version.

This could be cool. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it but as bad as it was I don’t know if it’s unsalvagable. Limited release in theaters in December and then VOD and Blu-ray rerelease:

I'll try to check that out wherever it's released. I'm quite fond of the third movie.

It’s been over ten years since I last saw it. I made the mistake of watching it within a few days of seeing the first two films for the first time so I’m sure that was part of why I disliked it so much. I don’t remember much about it outside really disliking Sofia Coppola in this, and being even more disappointed when I found out Winona Ryder was originally cast in that role. Definitely down for a rewatch when this comes out though, and it’s been a few years since I’ve watched the first two so it’s a good excuse to just watch all three again.

Yeah, that would do it. :funny:

Now in a perfect world, you should be able to watch three great movies back to back. The first two are some of the greatest movies of all time. But I think Godfather 3 in and of itself is a good movie. The problem with the movie is that you don't quite have the amount of great characters from the last two. Duvall's absence the most notable. I think if he was in it, it could have made up for Coppola's bad performance at least. If Ryder was in it and you had Duvall, I think the movie wouldn't have been as disparaged. It still wouldn't have been as good as the other two, but I think those are two big dings against it. The story itself is great though. To me, that's the story of a third one if you have to do it.

The script with Tom Hagan exists online. It's pretty much the same story but with Hagan factoring in it. And it makes a difference.

One thing I never got with Part III is Michael's hair and it messes up the iconography of the character for me. I know hairstyles changed between the 1940-50s and the late 70s/80s, but the short grey, brushcut looks really strange to me. It looks like a bad wig and takes me out of the film.

Duvall sat Part III out because of a salary dispute. They should have just paid the man. But I think you're right. If he and Ryder had been in it, it would more than likely have been a better film. But I've never thought that Part III was bad. A lot of people forget that it was still nominated for Best Picture. It just doesn't look good in comparison to the first two films.

Also, Winona Ryder as Michael's daughter not only would have gone over better since she's arguably a better actress than Sofia Coppola, but she also looks more like she could have been the daughter of Pacino and Keaton. Francis Ford Coppola probably should have considered other actresses after Ryder dropped out, but he's always been a notorious nepotist. :o

First trailer for The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone...

It's being released on Blu-Ray and Digital on December 8th, so close already......... INSTANT PRE-ORDER!

I think it's unfair that Coppola gets the majority of the hate for her acting in part III when Andy Garcia was worse.

I think part III is unsalvageable unless they plan on splicing Tom Hagen in and taking that weird incest story out.

Nothing beats the first movie - although I prefer the book.

Still, the first film is one of the GOATs and the standard against which others are measured.

I didn't mind Garcia in it, except for him having the dumbest line in the entire trilogy.

I thought Garcia was fine and definitely not worse than Sofia Coppola who couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag.

Garcia was solid? I liked his character a lot. The representation of Michael's past that he wants to leave behind but can't. And even the incest storyline is very Shakespearean. When his daughter falls in love with him, it pretty much seals her fate no matter what Michael tries to do.
