The Greatest Criminal Mind of Our Time: Nicholas Hoult IS Lex Luthor

“In Superman Returns… well, somebody played him there too.” :funny:

Ĺex will probably not only NOT be in any legal trouble, he will probably come out smelling like a rose/hero, and will announce he's running for president at the end.
Given Disney's stance of toning down anti-Trump criticism, and how easy it would be for a supervillain president to be seen as Trump commentary, I've wondered if Zaslav's WB would go there.

I think they will, but Lex probably won't win, thanks to Clark and Lois uncovering the "dirt" on Lex.

Lex should win so he can be taken down. In my head cannon, Brainiac is the villain of the sequel and Lex is actually the one to publicly deliver the killing blow Brainiac, the public sees this and the election goes in his favor (not dissimilar to Dark Reign when Norman Osborn saves the day).

The movie would end with Superman showing up to Lex's acceptance speech, shakes his hand, and congratulates him.

I hope he has the genius level of Tony stark. It appears that he will.

Lex's "stupid costume" line was perfect. It feels like just from a few lines, Hoult already feels like the perfect Lex Luthor, with a clear objective. I feel like Eisenberg's--I can't even call him Lex Luthor--but Eisenberg's lunatic-Lex's motivations seemed complicated, moreover unclear. You could debate about it if you want, but his motivations didn't seem believable, nor made any sense to me. It just seemed flat-out too complicated and ridiculous.

There have been bad interpretations of comic book villains, and good ones. I think Luthor in Superman Returns was dull. His performance at times was entertaining, but still didn't seem that good of a villain. His hatred for Superman didn't seem clear enough. But the real estate plot...what do you start with, what resources for food and other things you need in life after you wipe out Earth's land with a green fortress and some crystals? Couldn't understand that.

Say what you want about Superman IV, as bad as it was, Gene Hackman was extremely entertaining in the movie. He seemed more evil than his performance in the first Superman movie, where he came across as more goofy than villain-like. While he was funny, he didn't seem like much of a threat. He seemed to like Superman in spite of trying to kill him.

But his lines such as, "The-end-of-Super-man" and "Destroy Superman" in Superman IV were some definitive moments of the character.
I think there are various traits that define a villain or there is at least one trait that makes them great. Eisenberg was not one of them.

Lets be honest, he wasn't really Lex Luthor. He was Max Landis in a bad wig.

“They chose him, let them die!”

****, Luthor really is T**mp.
It's ironic that John Byrne's Luthor is inspired by yours, truly...he-who-must-not-be-named...(Not Voldemort), who coincidentally would run for president...sigh.

To be fair, I never found the comparison to be fair, because let's face it, Lex Luthor is a genius and way smarter than Trump. But they have similar motivations.

Luthor also seems like Elon Musk minus his goofy and awkwardness. Insecure, despite being a multi-multi-billionaire, but definitely narcissistic and just wants to celebrate himself, no matter what creations he makes despite claiming he's doing it for the world, it's really only about himself. Obviously taking over Twitter was in response to people using free speech to publicly criticize him. And now I do see the similarities between Musk, Trump and Lex.

JE as Lex seemed about as threatening as a 4 year old in a teddy bear store.

Not sure what to make of Hoult's delivery of "I'll kill you and that reporter you always do interviews with...who raised you as a child? I'll them too."

Not sure about the voice. Every interpretation of Lex has been different, and I'm so used to Clancy Brown being the voice. If it were the animated series version, I'm not sure if his Lex would say he'd kill Superman's girlfriend or his parents. I feel like Lex should be wiser. Instead of threatening to kill Clark's loved ones, he would only try to kill Superman, claiming that Luthor himself is the good guy, trying to save humanity from alien invaders. Lex does after all, want to be better than Superman. Saying he would kill innocent people only proves Superman's point, that Lex is the bad guy.

I feel like maybe Luthor will wind up in jail by the end of this movie, though I'd rather he didn't go down that easily. Just think Lex should be smarter.

Regardless, Hoult is already looking and sounding better than Jesse Eisenberg ever could have done. I'll never forget when I found out Eisenberg was cast as...Lex Luthor?? He could have been Jimmy. I was convinced for two days that it was a joke. I couldn't have believed it. Once I finally learned it was true, I asked myself, "What was going through Zack Snyder's mind when he cast Eisenberg as Lex?"

Those lines by Lex might seem a bit out of character but remember that sometimes lines in trailers are cut together and they often skip key moments that give them more context. Maybe it works better in the movie. Anyway yeah, whatever happens, I’m 100% sure he’ll be better than Eisenberg. That’s obviously not too hard but still. I’m amazed at how much of a misfire that whole thing was. Easily one of the worst casting decisions in any superhero movie ever.

I'm just guessing here, but I bet it's toward the last act after superman has thwarted the plans of Lex, causing Lex to lose his cool and have a "I'll just kill em all then" moment.

If I'm being honest though, I think Billy Zane would have made the perfect Lex Luthor. His looks and charisma just screams Lex Luthor, not to mention his bald head. I feel like it was a huge missed opportunity.
