The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Hans Zimmer Score thread

I'm hoping for the theme to make a return. It deserves to go down in history.

Have you watched this by the way? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbMisrl1ByY

It's quite interesting.

I love his spirit on the emotional stuff, but he just kinda shoves away the action stuff like "eh, they write themselves". which is, imo, a wrong approach. they're just as important and need just as much work if not sometimes MORE than the emotional stuff. on a guitar, surprisingly it's much easier to create something that's emotional than something that's just "rocking good time"

soundtrack lovers, check out the soundtrack to Attack On Titan! it's written by a young guy, like at his 20's, but it's imo almost a perfect mix of emotion and action. here's one of the action tracks

now I admit, that track is a little cheesy but it's certainly a passionate kind of cheesy and sometimes it needs to be a little just that so it really hooks into our human impulses

I just don't want this to end up like the X-Men films that have no signature theme to the series. The theme song for TASM1 is great, but it was the rest of the score that was lacking IMO.

Zimmer should keep the theme, make it his own, and add his own original music to the rest of the film IMO.

How could he make it his own if he kept the theme? Pointless. Expect nothing of the first score. Again, if Sony and Marc Webb loved the first score, why didn't they re-hire Horner? They obviously wanted something different. That first film score was simply average imo, like everything else in the film. I thought the main theme was too heroic and old-fashioned, it didn't fit Spider-Man at all. More Captain America or Superman if you ask me. Strange considering they tried to turn Peter Parker into a modern day Jim Stark, so who really knows what they have in mind. Hopefully Zimmer and crew deliver something that matches the scale that the second film appears to have to this point.

Well, TASM1 was more than average. ;) But opinions are opinions…

You didn't like the revamped score of TASM1 in the SDCC footage? It fit Spider-Man pretty darn well. The basic sound was still there, but it was EPIC.

See, I liked the "heroic" theme, because it's indicative of the several ways you can approach the character. Take away Spidey's bizarre spider motif and you still have a good-hearted kid with heroic ideals.

Other than the theme itself, though, I didn't see nothing too special there either. It was very same-y in the context of Horner's other work. The track for when he's gearing up to swing through the cranes it's very similar to the "I'm the king of the world" Titanic track, the mysterious piano bits are too reminiscent of moments in Titanic and Deep Impact... it goes on. Zimmer's too big of a deal to want to work with somebody else's theme, though. I would also expect something new.

Hans is going to be answering questions on Reddit in about 15 minutes. Just a heads up.

It would be nice to have a little hint of the Horner theme for consistency's sake though. What did you think of the revamp in the SDCC footage?

Cool, thanks for the heads up! :D I won't be around to ask questions (about to leave house) so if someone could ask about Horner's theme, that would be great!

I thought it was cool, it was all right.

I just don't see Peter being as altruistic/patriotic as Superman or Cap, which those overly-heroic themes tend to be suited for. Of course Peter is heroic, but generally he's more conflicted and anti-establishment. Less black and white. Horner's theme didn't fit with this at all. I think Sony, wisely, realised this and brought Zimmer on.

"Hello, sir!
On the upcoming Spider-Man score, how did you approach the music to differentiate it from what you´ve done for The Dark Knight-movies and Man of Steel? And will you reference James Horner´s theme from the first movie in any way?
Thanks a lot!"

Hans Zimmer :
I try to approach it from the character's point of view. The character is a lot younger than any of those other superheroes and he's not as dark. I was thinking, how does a college graduate deal with their emotion? And I thought it wouldn't be Wagnarian Hans and slushy strings, but more of a post-rock approach.
Wow. Interesting POV on Zimmer's part. The whole "from the character's apporach". And what's Wagnarian Hans? Dude this post-rock appraoch sounds so awesome.

Man, reading all of his Q&A's, scoring these movies sounds like quite the experience for him in terms of effort. And hard work. I myself am able to write music and I know how hard it is for a part to "get right" or just click, but I can't imagine how scoring these blockbusters must be. Read his answers, it's fascinating.

I assume he means Richard Wagner, so less operatic in scale perhaps? This more contemporary post-rock approach is just what I wanted to here. :word:

Same here, dude. I wonder if what we hear on the site is any type of foreshadowing to his actual score. Hm idk.

'Wagnarian' means something approximating Richard Wagners work on the Ring Cycle (Opera revolving around Norse Gods and Heroes). Wagner's work was very bombastic with heavy brass sections backed by fluttering strings. So it was, basically, the opera equivalent of a big action film.

I'm also interested in the post-rock approach stemming from the protagonist. Interesting direction to take it. Glad to see him stepping out of his creative comfort zone for the first time in a long time. I'd love to have a jam session with Hans.

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. When he says post-rock, the first thing that comes to my mind is stuff like Explosions in the Sky.

Explosions in the Sky are excellent. For anyone who hasn't heard them before, go listen to Your Hand In Mine right now!

Loved what he said makes me very excited to hear what they've come up with and he said is just awesome

I really enjoy reading Hans' comments on reddit, or anywhere for that matter. Cool of him to do this stuff.
