And smashing the drums as fast and as hard as you can is not generic?

I don't think the drums are part of the melody cue in Zimmer's work. They're there and they're used in great emphasis, yes, but the actual cue is the piano one. It's the first thing that plays here:

This cue is pretty much what makes the whole score, the drums set the rhythm yeah but without an actual melody they would too be pretty generic. This cue sounds good in all it's variations be it faster tempo along with the drums or the more intimate slow burn solo piano theme. Horner's ASM theme trumpet cue doesn't tho.

Of course, this is all pretty subjective, we're discussing taste and everyone knows how far these discussions can go without any sort of conclusion ;)

Don't worry. You're not alone.

What critics liked Horner's score? ...and was it the overwhelming majority of them or only a select few?

And no you're not alone. There are 7 billion people on this planet, there is always that one person that likes the same thing you do.....I'm just not one of those people (well, when it comes to TASM's score)

I liked it overall but it wasn't necessarily impressive it lacked something at it's core. I tried very hard to like it, I still to this day listen to it at the gym or on walks and stuff once in a while.

All the reviews I found on the Wikipedia page were positive.

The score was one of the few things I really liked with TASM.

Horner was good, but not that good. I felt something was missing, if music was better, or you could say memorial, iconic, legendary, film would be so much better. Many movies lately suffer from same problem, music become too generic. I expected so much more from Horner. It's not i didnt like music, but i didnt felt this is Spiderman theme and music.

It was honestly my favorite superhero score in ages. Not one superhero theme of the last decade - Zimmer's Batman, Raimi's Spider-Man, ANYTHING from the MCU - has grabbed me the way that theme did. It had a real melody and heart that truly represented the hero it belonged to, imo. I'm heartbroken at the thought of it not returning.

don't worry, it has not been confirmed that they are not using it and Hans Zimmer is a man of consistency and while he'll do his own thing with the score, it will most likely be built around Horner's basic theme

What gives you this idea....

100% agree. The music is a big reason why I love TASM

As sad as it was for me to hear Horner was being scrapped, I love HZ so that softened the blow a little

Maybe cause the comic con footage was basically using Horner's theme

Means absolutely nothing since Zimmer hadn't even begun the score. Why would Zimmer take the job so he could build something around Horner's theme? If they wanted Horner, they'd have re-hired him. I will be shocked, absolutely SHOCKED, if this score isn't completely composed from the ground up. Maybe a few cues as a nod to Horner, but this will be an original score.

Yeah I agree. I was just saying maybe that's were he got the idea that they might build around Horner's theme

I'm crossing my fingers for this to happen, but unless I'm mistaken, I don't think there's any precedent of Zimmer doing anything like that in the past (I don't count The Lone Ranger since that's literally a classical piece of music), so I'm very skeptical. I'll admit I was encouraged by the music in the leaked trailer, but honestly, as others have pointed out, Zimmer almost certainly hadn't started doing the score yet at that point so it probably meant nothing. :csad:

I might be completely wrong, but didn't Zimmer come on to score a Pirates OTC sequel, and use some of Badelt's same cues from COTBP?

It may or may not be unprecedented, but I honestly think Zimmer's gona maintain the core original cue from the first TASM, and just do his thing and build on and around it.. Whatever the studio/creative team disliked about Horner's score that caused them to make the switch, if not to maintain some consistency, I know Marc Webb at the very least loved Horner's main theme. I remember that being one of the things I read before the movie came out, was how much he loved the theme JH came up with.. So there could potentially be some hope who knows

You're both right and wrong. He did score DMC after Black Pearl, but the cues were always Zimmer's to begin with.

So Sony has a big press release celebrating the assembly of a "supergroup" consisting of Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr, Michael Einziger and Dave Stewart only for them to use Horner's theme as a template? That would pretty much make them a glorified cover band. No chance. The visual look of the film will be different because of the format and cinematographer change, so there is really no issue in creating a whole new score to go with it.

Translation: The goal is to make the scope of this film bigger in every way...
