The Home Cleaning Thread

I used to have a cleaner come once a month when I shared an apartment with a roommate. It was great walking into a clean place like a hotel room once a month.

Now that I’m on my own though, I clean everything myself.

I love:
1. Mr clean magic eraser (works miracles)
2. Swiffer duster
3. Swiffer wet jet

I'm not a neat/clean freak in any way, but I do try to keep things in order as best I can. The Youtube channel Clean My Space has a ton of helpful stuff

I wish I had that sometimes. I work too much and want a lazy day off sometimes where I don't have to clean. :funny:

I also read you can get more out of your Swiffer Wet Jet pads by turning them inside out after one side gets too dirty.

Also if you have mold growth on your drywall or ceiling, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide will do the trick. Just smother it with a rag or paper towel soaked in either one and clean it again with another one just to make sure it's gone. Throw the rag away, do not reuse it for there could still be mold spores embedded in the rag. Be sure the room is properly ventilated and you are wearing a filter mask and eyeware to protect yourself from the spores which can trigger allergies. Make sure you are wearing old clothes that you can simply throw away afterwards.

I'll try giving this mix a shot then.

Thank you. :yay:

Glad I could help. Also don't use it on granite countertops. Granite doesn't like high acids which are in that solution. Try the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda solution for it minus lemon juice.

magic erasers are amazing. i'm so glad my friend works for P&G

I've been looking at spray mops lately. I'm using a Mr. Clean microfiber mop with a spray bottle of diluted Pinesol. I want to try a spray mop. I want one with a reusable pad, so Swiffer is out. I saw Bona, but it's a bit expensive and I'm not sure if you can use your own cleaner.

Just cleaned the bathroom and bath, sink, toilet etc. washed my hands before typing though :woot:

Hoovered lounge and emptied bins, just the mopping out left to do. It's amazing what having guests coming round does for the need for cleaning.

I don't consider myself a clean freak but I've noticed that my level of depression is tied in with how clean or neat my place is so I like to clean regularly, lol.

I actually came here to say this exact thing and was happy it was the second post.

If you feel unhappy with yourself or how things have been going lately, start by simply cleaning your living area. That's what I always tell people who are depressed or going through a rough spot. It won't fix the problem but it's a great start.

that's a great suggestion. i think part of my depression stems from seeing how small of a living space i live in and how much id like to do to it and can't

The lemon juice is there to make the vinegar less pungent, but you could substitute the alcohol and vinegar for hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. The latter with Dawn makes a stronger degreaser.

Also I've noticed on Pintrest that some folks are actually recommending mixing vinegar and hydrogen peroxide which is a huge NO as they create a corrosive acid if mixed in the same bottle.
People must be trolling with this, right?

Maybe they're Peggy Hill? :o

This is a little off topic but are there good, non herbicide ways to kill weeds between bricks?

Salt and vinegar solution?

The vinegar solution is a good method. You can also burn them using a handy propane torch.

having our side porch closed in today to turn into another room in the house. my brother will be moving into it for the time being and it will open up a lot of space in our house.

there's a big part of my brain that wants to live a more minimalist lifestyle, and another part of me that's fighting it vehemently lol
that being said, i'm trying to compromise. i've boxed up some things that i really really want to keep, and separated the stuff i don't really need to keep. i'm giving myself 90 days to get rid of these items and if they don't sell, i'm going to donate them somewhere

So I made an actual recipe for my cleaning solution:

1 cup of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol or Vodka
1/4 cup of Lemon Juice
Equal parts Distilled Water and White Vinegar
3 drops of Dawn Dish Soap

Now here's one if you want a citrus twist on it:
1 Glass Spray Bottle
1 cup Vodka or 70% Isopropyl Alcohol
3 drops of Dawn dish soap
Equal parts Distilled Water and White Vinegar
10 drops of Lemon, Mandarin, and Lime essential oils.

Shake well to mix.

Neat tip for anyone who needs to get some rust off their stainless steel knife. Use a ball of aluminum foil and a damp paper towel. Wet the blade with water, then rub the foil along it until a black film appears. Wipe it with a paper towel. Repeat process until rust is almost gone.

About to get hit by a hurricane. Good time to clean?

Anyone else out there hurricane prepping? Share your tips here

So I bought a cast iron skillet and I have seasoned it and cleaned it, but I'm noticing scorch marks from the coil of my electric burner. Will baking soda and hot water get rid of it or do I need to learn to live with it?

So I discovered the wonders of a body scrubber, but learned if you don't wring it out enough or clean it out enough, bacteria will feed on the dead skin left on it and may cause irritation when using it more. Should I stop using it or should I try something else? I thought about spraying it with Lysol every now and then to help prevent that.

Also what do people here use to clean up countertops? Paper towels, dish towel, wipes, or sponge?

I use these gloves for scrubbing, on a daily basis. They remove the dead skin and leave it super smooth! I'm used to it by now, but at first you may feel as if they were sandpaper.

After a few uses you will just get used to it and they do really get "softer":

After each shower, I make sure they are clean, there's no soap left in them and put them to dry. Every now and then, I get them into bleach and some hawt water for a few minutes to get rid of any unwanted bacteria/fungi/whatever.

And as for the countertop, I just use a sponge... Nothing too abrasive! I make sure to rinse the product I use, though! You don't want to spoil any food you put over the countertop, with any residual perfume/scents.
