The Horror Thread - Part 2

I liked Leatherface the one time I saw it. The original is a classic; I've got the poster on my wall.

... I've never seen Pumpkinhead.

Pumpkinhead's in my top 3. it has a really simple story. but it's also quite unique; as far as creature flicks go. some real love was put into Pumpkinhead's creation; from the casting, to the mythology, to the character design, etc. plus you get to see Lance Henrickson in something good.

That's one classic horror movie that I wouldn't mind being remade. Hell, I wouldn't mind a 4th movie with Tony Todd returning. Oddly enough, an amazing remake of Hellraiser could be achieved too.

I think that character (Candyman) could - and should - be way more popular and relevant than he currently is. Not only is he one of the few black icons of Horror (and a great one at that), but I personally put him up there with Freddy, Jason, Michael, and so on.

I've also always been very intrigued by the significance of Candyman being African American (aside from "Why not?"). It's not a case of the perfect casting happening to be a black man, but he's written as a black antagonist. It's set in the Chicago projects where the population is almost entirely African American. What's the significance of that?

I actually can't even think of another black antagonist aside from Blacula, which hardly counts in my opinion.

it was a very popular movie where i live; Illinois. part of it is that we were all aware of the cabrini green projects being shut down. a lot of the people living in those buildings wound up in my town (in new project buildings). that area was chosen because you can really feel cut off from society; living there. but i'm not sure that it made much sense for a ghost story about a black man being killed after sleeping with a plantation owner's daughter.

Candyman is one of my favorite horror films for sure. The score is amazing too "It was Always You, Helen" is so damn good

Yeah in addition to Todd's chilling performance, the grisly and disturbing images in the movie, and the the gritty and urban locations. Phillip Glass' hauntingly gothic score for Candyman always gave me the creeps (as did the film itself).

Beautiful avatar dude. And agree withe verything you said.

I also really enjoyed the first Child's Play. Did anyone see the new Chucky movie?

Yeah, Philip Glass was really an inspired choice to score Candyman, just for the fact that you have a traditionally classical composer doing a horror film. It's really absurd in theory, but incredible in practice. One of my favorite films scores ever, actually.

I wish Hollywood would do headscratchingly oddball things like this again. The horror genre doesn't really try to do "A modern Beauty and the Beast about an african-american dream-killer who has a hook for a hand and is made of bees." Now it's just kind of like "Zombie Movie 96a," "Zombie Movie 78b".

In general... filmmakers don't really appreciate the medium as a visual medium anymore. Horror could be a beautifully artistic genre, just like a lot of the work by Dario Argento.

Another awesome fact about the film is that the man himself Stan Winston actually directed Pumpkinhead which a lot of people don't know.

Did anyone see the trailer to Wolf Creek 2, it was released today? I really liked the first film, and this looks just as creepy/disturbing.

After watching the Maniac remake I figured I'd top it off with the original Maniac, pretty psyched it's been a long time since I've watched it.

Leatherface: TCM III is awful. The only thing that's worse is what came after -- TCM: The Next Generation. Literally one of the worst films ever made.
I don't mind TCM III. Viggo Mortenson and Ken Foree were decent in it. The whole "Saw is family" thing was stupid, but LF got a badass chainsaw out of it.

Overall for me, it goes like this:
TCM
TCM remake
TCM II
TCM III
TCM: Beginning
TCM 3D (haven't watched it yet but it has to be better than Next Gen.)
TCM: NG

With all the talk about Candyman, I went and read the original Clive Barker story "The Forbidden." It is surprisingly close to the film, but Candyman is different, having yellowing flesh and no mention of once being an African American slave, just a human-like creature kept alive by folklore.

As did I. I havent seen it but know that it got generally positive reviews with moving away from the campyness of the last couple and trying to return to its original horror roots.

Finally finished my Buffy marathon last night. Today I've started in on actual horror movies. Started with Army Of Darkness (granted that one is more Fantasy/Adventure/Comedy than actual horror), then Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Now I'm watching Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Anyone that isn't a Texas Chainsaw fan cannot truly call themselves a horror fan. ;)

I know there's some tongue in cheek there but you can be a fan of a genre without liking a classic. Personally I don't like any of the original TCM films, the first one I find vastly overrated. I'm not a fan of it at all. I don't regard it as a true classic like Halloween or Friday the 13th. I did like the remake though.

Ohh lord . Is that the one where he looks like a fat ass women at the end screaming like a girl :whatever: or is it the one where he types in F.O.O.D in his alphabet computer or is that the same bloody movie

Well I guess that you DO actually like a Texas Chainsaw film then technically right? :woot:

Yeah haha, its one of those films. I won't say I don't get why people like it cause I do its just not for me. Its like the Exorcist I don't like it but I get why its a classic.

All of this Candyman talk has me going nuts so I moved it up on my list and I'm watching it right now, still imo one of the best horror movies to come out of the 90's.

I'm not a fan of that one either.....

Watching it right now. Tony Todd is so young in this. I forgot just how long ago this movie was made.

*Gathers other Hype members and tosses BH/HHH off a bridge.*

I'm watching a film called Resolution right now. Blind bought it at Wal-Mart last night, and it seems pretty good so far.
