I have a number of Blu-rays from Scream Factory. I think the majority of the transfers are pretty good, but then again, I'm not a Blu-ray snob. They Live does have some noticeable DNR, but I don't think it looks like ****.

I don't think all the raving from fans is truly justified since the transfers, while good, could be better. Personally, Synapse films is a lot better. I bought both the limited edition steelbook blu-rays for Demons 1 & 2 and they look fantastic. Synapse did push back the release date once or twice, but it was worth it.

The main problem with SF is that they're so busy trying to release numerous films that it doesn't give them as much time or money to try to give those films the best possible transfer.
Thanks... I'm not a blu ray snob either. I just love the bonus footage. That's why I love all the Hammer releases coming out lately. They're loaded with them.

I got Phantasm 2 and it was great. Tons of extra's and that movie looks great in HD.

I'm on a werewolf kick right now so I can't wait for Ginger Snaps and Dog Soldiers.

Personally I think all the Scream factory stuff I've bought or seen was above and beyond fantastic, I really appreciate them putting in the effort into lesser known more cult status types of films.

Same here. I was really excited when they announced Dog Soldiers and Ginger. I'm also waiting on Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut. I don't expect the transfer on Nightbreed to be all that great though considering the scenes put back in the film I heard aren't the best quality, but I'm a huge Barker fan and can't wait to see the film he really wanted to release.

Also, check out Synapse films. That's where I got the limited editions of Demons and Demons 2, even though they were a bit overpriced. Recently Synapse announced that they have the rights to Dario Argento's Suspiria. If you like the transfers that Scream Factory puts out, you should love films from Synapse.

Yeah, they really are a great company for going after movies a lot of the studios wouldn't bother with due to the fact that they probably wouldn't sell a lot of copies.

Thanks... I actually had some and didn't know it. Their releases of the Hammer films is outstanding. I can watch Twins of Evil over and over again.

it's unfortunate that there are really only a handful of werewolf movies that i'd care to rewatch. i'm looking to expand my collection.

Yeah Its kind of strange. My favorites are...

The Werewolf of London
The Wolfman
Frankenstein vs the Wolfman
Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein
Curse of the Werewolf
An American Werewolf in London
Ginger Snaps
Dog Soldiers

That's pretty much it for me. There are some good idea's out there but they didn't pan out very well IMO.

I'm actually trying my hand at writing screenplays and I'm about 10 pages into a werewolf script right now. I have everything outlined and at the very least... its something I like.

So what do you guys think of Black Christmas? Did you like it? What did you like about it? Did you dislike it? Why? What about the remake?

As for me? I LOVE the 1974 original Black Christmas. I watch it every year at around this time. I love the suspense and the tension, and the snippets of comic relief. The one thing I didn't like, was how Clair's dad faints and they rush him to the hospital, but Jess (who was pregnant and actually fought off the killer) is left alone in the house. I don't mind that they didn't check the attic and that her boyfriend wasn't really the killer, in fact I liked that as it's proper police procedure, but leaving her alone in the house when she should have been taken to the hospital kinda bugs me.

As for the remake? At the risk of sounding like a broken record, THE REMAKE SUCKS. All blood. All gore. All stupid jump scares. Zero tension. Zero suspense. Everything the original got right, the remake got wrong. Although to be fair, that was mostly due to studio interference. But that doesn't make it suck any less.

What other Christmas themed horror movies do you guys like? Christmas Evil? Silent Night, Deadly Night? Gremlins? Saint Nicholas? Let's have some opinions here.

Where is this? I love Black Christmas!!!

The phone calls are creepy enough but when that eye looks out of the crack of the doorway.... yeash...

Also want to give a mention to Rare Exports. To explain it would be giving it away but I loved the idea.

i loved the idea but, ultimately, was disappointed with the movie. it very much became a children's movie towards the end. i guess i should i have expected that with the kid being the perspective character. :shrugs:
i still prefer the dutch evil santa movie; 'Saint Nick.'

This week, I had the opportunity to interview some of the key personnel from Silent Night, Deadly Night. My transcript of the interview should be going up soon.

I liked that one too. I watched it on Netflix last summer. I thought it was a Danish movie though (Amsterdam is in Denmark, right?).

Anyway, worth watching if you can find it.

the remake or the original?

There's a remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night? Are you sure you're not mixing it up with Black Christmas? (some distributers renamed it "Silent Night, Evil Night" for American audiences, others renamed it "A Stranger In The House", which is even worse because you give away the whole plot right there).

A couple of things...

I watched Byzantium. It was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I liked it, didn't love it. As far as modern vampire movies go, it was certainly above most of the pack (Kiss of the Damned, Twilight, Embrace of the Vampire etc) had the proper mood etc. I just think it was a tad predictable.

Also, JUST finished watching Curse of Chucky. This was MUCH better than I expected! It actually managed to create a true Horror mood, despite the franchise's inherent (and prior) silliness. Yes, it relied on some tried and true tricks...but so did The Conjuring...and...you know what...I think I liked this more. Maybe it was because I was expecting so little and got something good (while expecting something great from The Conjuring and getting something good).

EDITED TO SAY: I do wish that they had not included a few mentions of prior films, especially the latter films, which I think should just be washed away, but ended up playing heavily on this film. I'd rather it have been a vague sequel that happened at some point after Child's Play and leave it at that.
