The Horror Thread - Part 4

I've seen maleficent. It scared me, mostly because of Jolie's make-up. Also, it was unoriginal, unlike what they wanted you to believe, which was really terryfying to me.

I got escape from tomorrow. So, it gained some publicity because it was shot without permission in disneyworld. Which is kinda intriguing. It's also, imo, the only interesting thing about the movie. The lead actor was incredibly annoying, and his character was an unlikeable jerk, who was always thinking of his penis before thinking of his children. The story was thin as paper, and the symbolism was incredibly dumb. But the movie worst's sin is that it was boring.

I'm not sure it qualifies as horror, save for the fact that i was horrified by how boring it was.

That's literally all I've ever heard regarding that film. The concept was intriguing, but when you can't like the characters at all, and its such an incoherent mess of a film, you really can only admire how it got made. Whether it needed to be made is another story.

The Nest (1988) is AWESOME! Corman never fails me!

Exactly. You know, I've nothing against weird movie, it doesn't even bother me not to understand everything, especially since I really love David Lynch's movies for instance. But in this instance, there was really nothing for me to like.

On the other hand, I watched Lake Mungo yesterday, and I really like it. The whole neighbour subplot wasn't needed imo, and it was kinda cliche. Other than that, it was engagin, the characters were likeable, the documentary style worked really well. I liked how it didn't play on jump scareS. Instead, it showed you some haunting images, that would make you think, and would stay with you. The Lake Mungo scene was particularly unsettling. The one shot with the revelation stayed with me the whole night. My kid woke me up during the night, and when I went to see him, I kept seeing this shot, it was kinda disturbing. the ost was also really great. I'm glad I watched this one.

Tried watching Septic Man (2014)...a movie that is getting a lot of hype from the trailer.

When the movie starts the water supply is contaminated and people are vomiting, having serious bowel issues...skin falling off...basically dying terrible deaths. A septic crew member goes in to fix the problem and gets trapped down there with the contamination.

Okay...so this COULD be a really fun, twisted movie! Unfortunately, it's not. It has bad acting, which is fine...but it plays itself straight and that is not the way to go with a movie like this. There's this boring story about some guys who trap him down there and visit him off and on and this crooked businessman type and...really I just wanted to see people's flesh turn to mush as they puked and crapped all over themselves. I got bored and turned it off with about 20 minutes left to go.

NOTE: I've been having some sleep issues lately due to a personal tragedy...getting about an hour per night for the past week...so it is entirely possible that my dazed and glazed over brain simply wasn't processing the movie (after a few days of no sleep, staying focused is a challenge lol)...but I'm not going to rewatch it when things improve for me.

Has anyone seen that movie As Above So Below? Anyone know if it's good?

When I see As Above So Below I just think of an old Yngwie Malmsteen song. The title comes from old religion...like Hermeticism or something...and is a part of occult type beliefs. I dont know enough about the belief system to really "get" it...but its something like you are the universe and the universe is you so blah blah blah. It's a famous saying though.

Right. Still a lousy title for a film, though.

Saw As Above So Below...I enjoyed it. I didn't care for the horror elements but everything else was really entertaining.

Just watched 'In Fear'. It's pretty great. The pacing and cinematography really build this overwhelming sense of dread. I also liked that they didn't bother over-explaining anything. I definitely recommend it.

Saw Oculus last night. It was a good if predictable movie. Nothing was a twist but it was still well put together and acted.

Watched Leprechaun: Origins (2014) from WWE Films

This got a lot of early hate for replacing the Leprechaun we all know with WWE's Hornswaggle, and basically turning the character into a random monster rather than a guy in a green hat. Hardly matters, because the Leprechaun barely gets a minute of combined screen time in the entire film. But yeah...he's just a snarling monster...could've been called anything.

Meanwhile, WWE's two Irish wrestlers, Sheamus and Paige, are not in this.

Okay...so the story...4 young people go to Ireland on a trip. It seems to be to satisfy a historical interest in the main girl, but she is actually giving up her dreams of being a history major to be with her boyfriend...and her boyfriend doesn't seem to give a darn about her. It's a useless subplot that serves only to make you wonder why they bothered to come, why they are even together, and why we should worry about their safety.

So...this town mined gold back in the day...but the leprechaun wanted his gold back, or he'd kill the townspeople. So...for a long, long time the locals got unsuspecting tourists to go into the danger area...they would trap them, put gold over them and let the leprechaun take the gold and kill the people. My question is...the leprechaun wants gold...and they have a supply of gold on hand to use when they capture people...so why can't they just give the leprechaun gold? The claim is that he "feasts" on the victims...but that it never even remotely shown to be the case, as he routinely kills people and leaves their bodies. He is after their gold.

The leprechaun is basically bound to the geographical area. So, at one point one of the townspeople even asks why they don't just move outside of that area, rather than have to constantly kidnap and help murder people (or risk being killed themselves)...and the response is basically "we don't move over something like that"...which is not only a flimsy excuse, it isn't true...as the man who makes that claim had earlier admitted to moving from his original home which was closer to the Leprechaun's lair.

Also...if the idea is to put people into this area so that the leprechaun can take the gold and kill the victims...then why on earth is the trap area LOADED with weapons that they can use to defend themselves (such as machetes, axes etc)???

So...really...this entire movie is based on nonsense.

But...once you get past all of that...it's a standard "young people being hunted in a cabin in the woods" movie.

EDITED BECAUSE: I actually got the director wrong...turns out, the Soska twins are doing a different Horror movie for WWE...oh joy...more goodness to come!

Saw it. Honestly, its in the middle, I rated it a 6/10. I won't spoil it, but the trailer don't tell you, the whole prompt for going into the catacombs is a search for the philosopher's stone. You learn this five minutes into the movie. As for the rest, the set up is actually pretty interesting, and the first 45 minutes of build up are actually pretty nice and develop most of the characters well. Once the scares start though, it sort of reminds me of if they filmed a haunted attraction. It doesn't look like one of those, but what I mean is, it plays out like scare, move forward, scarier thing, move forward, etc. etc. Most of the deaths were sadly spoiled in the trailer as well. There were a couple scares that actually made me and the audience jump though, so I can't harp on those too much. But at the end, it both makes sense and makes no sense whatsoever, and kinda just ends because I feel like they either didn't have the budget for a big finale, or didn't quite know how to the end the film.

October is just around the corner (like that scary guy from Mulholland Drive:hehe:)...what are your Halloween movies this year?

My list:

Young Frankenstein
Ernest Scared Stupid
The Willies
Phantom of the Opera (1925)
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
The Phantom Carriage
Dracula (1958)
Brides of Dracula
Dracula, Prince of Darkness
Tales that Witness Madness
Tales of Terror
Twice-told Tales
City of the Dead

I've seen noone lives. It's basically a b movie with a lot of gore. It was fun. Nothing memorable, but never boring. and Luke Evans owned the screen. I was also glad to see Lee Tergersen, even if he didn't do much.

Trick R Treat
The Mist (B&W only)
The Thing
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead (both versions)
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Halloween
V/H/S
V/H/S 2
Nosferatu
The Evil Dead
The Evil Dead 2
Saw
Sleepy Hollow
The House of the Devil

and some others but if I had to pick one, it would have to be Trick R Treat. It's for me the quintessential Halloween film.

Finally sat down and watched the 1st purge movie. MY god what a horrible film and Im not bashing the movie to just do it. The kids in the movie were stupid and the parents even worse. The daughters boyfirend in the movie sneaks in the house before lockdown and decides to kill the father because he barred him from seeing his daughter and by doing this he thinks they can be together. Then the son lets a homeless man in because he wants help from being killed then once he lets him in the kid looks scared and then later on helps hide the homeless man so the parents dont turn him over to the villians. just stupid acts one after another and just overall hurt the story from being enjoyablle.

How they greenlit a sequel is beyond me.

'The Purge: Anarchy' is good for Frank Grillo kicking ass, but that's about it.

I love horror anthologies, but I didn't like Trick R Treat that much...:csad: some of it was good though.

I think the best horror anthology is "Dead of Night" from 1945. It didn't scare me when I watched it, but I couldn't get it out of my head when I lay in my bed at night:hehe: same thing with "Three Cases of Murder" from 1955...the first story in the movie chilled me to the bone. I wish it was more well-known.

We need more horror anthologies!:woot:

Yes, we do:up:

I've been in the mood to watch Halloween 6 recently. Don't judge me.
