The Horror Thread - Part 5

I thought the Babadook was mediocre, It Follows on the other hand lived up to the hype.

I feel completely the opposite.

It Follows as slickly produced and people are gaga over the soundtrack but I found the film itself to be quite muddled and inane. I did however like the opening and lot of the scene at the beach.

Full disclosure though, Babadook may have worked better for me because I work with kids that act very similarly to the son in the Babadook. Truly realistic horror.

Watched Muck (2015) a sequel to a movie that doesn't exist, picking up right in the middle of the action where the nonexistent film "left off." Why did they make this unnecessary decision? Who knows...but apparently they are making a prequel AND a sequel to this. This is not really a movie...its act 2 of a movie...stretched to feature length. This means that nothing will be properly set up or resolved in this middle chapter.

I have A LOT to say about this film...that is utter garbage but COULD and SHOULD have been awesome.

Before I get into it...there's something I'm curious about. The story takes place in a town called "West Craven." Get it??? Well...they take the opportunity to have a character say something like "West Craven...that place used to be cool, but not anymore. It's boring now." How many potential fans did they lose by inserting a needless jab at one of the greatest minds in Horror history? What would YOU think of a movie (by a first time writer/director) that took the time to do this?

Some spoilers within...but nothing TOO specific.

A group of annoying young adults are out in the woods being hunted by a gang of random albino killers.

This starts off as what could be a fun movie. It wasn't reinventing the wheel...but it had all of the pieces needed to make a fun movie in a genre that doesn't have many good films in the past few years. Unfortunately, it collapsed under the sheer laziness of the writer/director.

The production values are actually really good! They used pro gear to film this (apparently thanks to a VERY successful kickstarter campaign)! HOWEVER (because even the good aspects have their negatives)...this film is way too dark...ESPECIALLY considering that the main point seems to be to show off female flesh (which can barely be seen due to the lighting).

The girls are mostly legitimately hot and most of them find a reason to get naked or in their underwear. In this type of movie, sexy girls who repel clothing is practically a must, and this certainly has that. Unfortunately, even this turns into a negative. Eventually I got the impression that this film only exists so that the director could ogle women's bodies. One woman in the bathroom of a bar has an extended scene where she is trying on different lingerie, trying to decide which one she looks hottest in...because women carry around giant collections of lingerie everywhere they go??? This isn't funny...and I don't think its meant to be. A few characters show up out of nowhere, take their clothes off, and are never seen again.

A few of the cast members treated this film like it mattered. What the movie had them doing was terrible, but that isn't their fault. I'm not awarding any Oscars...but I appreciate that some (not all) of the cast threw themselves into their very shallow roles. Other actors, as expected, are terrible.

Early in the film there is a brief scene that tries to be Scream. You'll know it when it happens.

In fact, I think that the film maker REALLY believes that his movie is witty...but it's not. Every time I cringed at bad, out of place dialogue I could practically hear the writer/director patting himself on the back.

I wish there was a character worth liking. Arguing is a cheap and easy replacement for character development, and I hate it. Also, there's the standard cliche of characters doing things that no one would ever do. One guy runs off to get help...and at some point just seems to lose any sense that his friends are in grave danger. After ordering a round of shots (seriously), he DOES make the call for help (to the least reliable person on Earth)...but he seems bored of it all by the time he gets him on the phone and can't be bothered to stress how desperately his friends need help. On his way back to his friends, he stops to stare at a sexy woman who is changing her clothes in her home (and that is the extent of her involvement in the film). It's hard to take the guy's emotions seriously when he does stuff like this.

Not the worst movie I've seen this year...but the fact that they had so much going for them and managed to fail so spectacularly makes it one of the most enraging films of the year.

I watched 'Joy Ride' for the first time, cowritten by JJ Abrams.

Very..underrated. It stinks of the early 2000's, but overall it's a well made horror film, that pays homage to 'Duel' without being a copycat.

And Leelee Sobeski was a hottie!

Joy Ride was an awesome, well-crafted B-movie. Not ashamed to say I own it.

So do I, the touches of black humour were what made it stand out I think

Always loved Joy Ride. Underrated for sure.

Watched Exeter (2015) from Marcus Nispel (who did the remakes for Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th).

A group of annoying teens are partying in an old mental hospital and release an evil presence.

So...basically yet another Exorcist rip-off, done more in a slasher movie style. It doesn't really feel like an homage...but more of a collection of cliches...and with 3 male characters with long hair, it feels outdated (and for the record, I have long hair myself.)

Lots of jump scares...of course a crab-walk scene...it covers all the basics.

There's a few humorously violent scenes that made me chuckle, so that's a plus.

In short...you've seen a thousand movies exactly like this. This is not the worst of the bunch...but I'd wait for Netflix Instant Streaming if I were you, because it's not really something you'll get invested in.

I'm the same (the kids I work with are not that messed up though). The badabook felt real, because the characters were well written and interesting.

Watched Bound to Vengeance (2015)

Cool concept, despite being built on a stupid premise. In the beginning of the film, a girl who has been kidnapped escapes. Instead of calling the cops she decides to "kidnap" her kidnapper, and force him to take her to the places he keeps other victims.

1. Good performances by the two leads. I wouldn't mind seeing either of them in future genre movies (all I ever watch is Horror, Sci Fi and Fantasy type movies)
2. At about 77 minutes long, it isn't a long film, but the unique concept gets repetitive very quickly. And the flashback scenes are repetitive as well, so I guess they just didn't have much story to tell but wanted it to be feature length.
3. If any plot points surprise you, then congratulations on watching your first movie ever.
5. It's not quite trashy enough to be exploitation (like I Spit on Your Grave), and its not smart enough to be any real statement. It's kind of in the middle.

Nice attempt at being a little something different and meaningful...but not great execution.

It Follows

8/10

That grade may change with repeat viewings.

That's finally out on blu ray so I'm gonna grab it

I just watched for the first time Alien. That was incredible.
I mean, I knew a lot about the movie. I've seen clips, the ending, etc. I tought Alien woudn't scare me that much. Yet I was by the edge of my seat, palpitating and scared for most of it. I loved it. I rank it in the top 3 of best horror movies, together with The Exorcist and Psycho.

Tales of Halloween.

Doesn't look all that great but I admit I' am sucker for an horror anthology.

It kind of reminds me of Trick 'R Treat.

I'll probably check it out...like you, I'm a sucker for anthologies as well. haha

Trick 'R treat is fantastic. And another sucker here lmao.

I just saw the Gallows a few days ago and.. it wasn't completely horrible. But still pretty bad, especially the ending. And it was way too short for my tastes. Overall I wouldn't say that it was worth it. Brought nothing new to the table.

As for It Follows, I really dig the weird dreamy atmosphere and the cinematographic call back (coining this term now :o) to John Carpenter's Halloween was really cool. It wasn't quite the movie I was expecting though, and I didn't find any of it particularly scary.

I'm looking for a movie where the 'bad guy' alternates between funny and scary, kind of like Freddy but actually in a scary movie. Any suggestions?

Speaking of Trick R Treat here is the poster for director Michael Daugherty's "Krampus" out this year.
