The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Parts 1 & 2

I don't blame them for adding more characters since they're stretching it out to two movies.

I'm a bit disappointed they're shooting the final two films digitally -- it'll save costs and add flexibility. But I like that slightly grainy, filmic look of the first two pics.

At least they're shooting with a great camera. They couldn't have picked a better one than the Arri Alexa XT.

The DOP from Catching Fire is coming back, and I think he's savvy enough to make the digital cameras work. When digital works, they're beautiful..but only a few cinematographers know how to actually WORK 'em.

because i have read the book, i have the weird sensation of really looking forward to Pt 2 of this but not Pt 1.

basically, virtually EVERYTHING happens towards the end and the first two-thirds of the book is just set-up. it'd be like if Catching Fire ended right as Katniss was shot up into the arena or something. there's virtually no action in the book until the end.

i have to think they must be adding some action scenes or something to Pt. 1, but right now i have very little idea as to what those could be and that would fit the narrative in a natural way. i guess little skirmishes and stuff with Capitol troops or something?

Cool. I liked Robert Knepper in Heroes.

Curious. How do fans of the book feel about new characters being created specifically for the movie? It happens in comic book movies, too, but most of those aren't following one particular storyline to a fault.

With most books, I might be annoyed. I found the third very meh though and hope this means they'll be improving upon it.

I've been extremely tempted to read this book after enjoying the first two movies (especially Catching Fire) and wanting to see how the conclusion plays out, but based on the general reaction to it from fans, I'm a little worried that maybe I ought to just wait for the movie(s).

you might want to wait.

i hope they may possibly add more rebellion scenes, i'd like to see the scope of Dist 13. if his name is Antonious, it sounds like a Capital name. He could be of the capitol or fled from the capitol.

i kinda would like to see the warehouse scene(s). to prevent spoilers, i won't say anything more than that

I like the books but in this case I honestly feel the movies clicks better for me, while it maintains the spirit of the books there's just enough elements that the visual medium haveto its advantages but what's surprising is that they actually utilize it. From the inspired casting, the directing, wisely not to limit the POV to just Katniss gives other characters more breathing room to feel like real characters, emotions and the delivery articulate better on-screen.

I think we might just start a separate thread for this one, since it's only 8 months away.

I thought there was already a thread for it.

Natalie shaved her head for Mockingjay

Man, Natalie Dormer still looks amazing with even half of her head shaved!

clearly that man behind her doesn't understand Capitol Couture lol

Didn't know they were switching to digital with these two, that sucks. The film stock has really fitted the world of Panem in the two first movies, and also given it a visual foundation to connect the films with, while still having the chance to build an individual visual identity.

Really, really liking Catching Fire has made me even more against the splitting up of the book. Considering what he did with the second book, which is my least favorite in the trilogy, I feel Lawrence could make one killer film of the last book.

Now we might get two really good films, but I feel that doing one film has the potential of being fantastic.

Guess they will add a lot to the first half, since the book is mostly build up (great build up mind you, but not very interesting as a single movie).

Having a hard time finding a great spot to end the first part on too.

Francis Lawrence said the switch was due to the shift of tone with Mockingjay. We'll see how it'll looks.

I'm sure a certain event in the second film will work better than in the book. Because I was just straight up confused about what I read when it happened.

My mind was blown when I found out little Jonathan from Buffy the Vampire Slayer wrote the screenplay to these films while he also wrote Game Change and Lee Daniel's The Butler.

Major props Mr. Strong.
