Ahhhh a place to discuss this fine trailer.

The other good spot is the AV Club comments section on their trailer article.

I thought this trailer was great.
Highlights:
1. Wes Bentley's amazing evil beard:

2. The reaping! Elizabeth Banks has evil claws! Kids lined up like cattle! Screaming desperate Katniss! Peeta looking stricken! So worthwhile.

3. The editing at the end of the trailer during the countdown. Cut to Prim in a dark room not watching Katniss about to battle to the death. Cut to Gale in a far removed field not watching Katniss about to battle to the death. Cut to District 12 folks watching. This was TIGHT. I was practically experiencing heart failure during this scene.

4. Stanley Tucci has blue hair! He looked rad.

5. The fear and panic on her way to the arena and in the cylinder was palpable. Can't wait to see this in the movie.

6. The look of the sets. I mean people have been complaining that District 12 doesn't look grim enough, but in reality, I think the problem they really have is that they secretly feel that the sun isn't supposed to shine in a dystopian future. All District 12 scenes were in the sunshine.

I guess that one CG shot of the capitol could use some work. That slanting light effect is over used, reminds of the shiny buildings in Batman Begins... the sun glinting doesn't look cool, folks. It makes it look like CG people are showing off in the worst way possible.

fin.

great post Babs i pretty much agree with all you said

and Crane's epic face hair is well, epic

I doubt this movie will get violent anyway... that would mean scaring away the Twilight crowd

24 go in, only 1 can come out. with the 23 deaths the hunger games bring, you don't think they'd show any violence?

edit: it's been about a year since i read the books so can someone clarify this for me:

when Katniss does the 3 fingered salute and the people do it back to her, was that in the first book or in the second book while they were on tour? or both? i can't remember

Well Major Spoilers for people that haven't read the books

From what I recall correct me if I'm wrongThe 3 Finger Salute started off when Katiness Volunteered for the Hunger Games. The People of District 12 gave her that salute. Then when Rue died she gave the salute as a memorial

Both-ish. In the first, District 12 does it to her after the reaping. Then District 11 (Whatever Rue's is) does it to her in the second. She does it in the first but we don't see the people do it back because she's in the games. I guess in the film we do.

Anyone else wondering how watered down the violence is going to be in this film?

Seriously? The Movie is going to be PG-13 so I doubt they will water down it that much.

I hope we get a new trailer showing off the games and Rue looks adorable. Cato also looks awesome.

We are talking about kids killing each other here, and American cinema which is far more conservative than the rest of the world.

Again, LOTR Return of the King had severed heads thrown over the walls of Minas Tirith, I think we will be ok with a few deaths.

With the restriction of a PG-13 rating you'll have to come up with creative ways to show the killing, I guess they won't show too much of people bleeding to death. Besides the ones we follow where Katniss is involved in the killing in the games, most of it could occurred off-screen.

I haven't read the books, but that trailer didn't do anything for me. Looks like The Condemned with pimples.

Ok, so the movie might be violent who knows, or violent but off-screen violence, the trailer certainly didn't show anything violent... but I guess all the violent stuff happens only after they enter the forest

Americans are more liberal when it comes to blood and violence, but the instant they show any boobs or nudity they'd be slammed with a R rating. European countries tend to be more lenient on nudity but harsh on violence.

And they don't appear pre-teen/adolescent in the trailer. They're more on the side of young adults.

I really wonder how there going to handle some of the stuff aswell. There are some pretty gruesome sad things in this franchise.

hope is growing, but I'm still remembering the countless times I have been let down by movie adaptations.

The moments that will make or break this movie for me:

The death of Rue. Will they really show Rue getting speared in the stomach and Katniss skewing the offender through the eye with an arrow? (I think that's the way it went down.) Also Katniss's handling of Rue's death. The Mockingjay song and all that. This sequence in my mind is the most pivitol part of this movie.

The trackerjacker sequence needs to be appropriately disturbing.

I am hoping Cato's brutality isn't watered down too much.

In the movie Battle Royale, there were alot of shocking things happening that made you shake your head, so I hope this movie will have the guts to show them as well.

The problem is people who haven't read any of the books will want this to be a bloody kill fest. It's going to damage the movie in their opinions because they're going to want things that just aren't in the book in the first place. Yes, there was violence in the book but it wasn't constant. And I'd say a lot of the kills are off-screen (in the book at least).

So I understand that ppl want gritty, powerful violence in a story like this, but even reading the books, the violence was never the focal point in the story. Even during the Games, it was more about escaping death and only killing when it was nessecary (for our protagonist, anyways).

Not to mention, and I don't know if this is a spoiler or something everyone already assumes, but the Games are booby trapped. So some of these kids don't even have to murder one another. If you're at the wrong place at the wrong time, the nature of the Games will kill you itself.

I just don't think ppl should say this movie won't be any good because "the violence will be dumbed down for American audiences". I never found the first book overly violent in the first place.

And it's unfair that all these Battle Royal comparisons are trying to discredit the Hunger Games. I guess because Star Wars and Star Trek both take place in space they're both the same story.

Yeah thats what I've been trying to say from the beginning, there isn't much violence and there isn't much action. It's all about the intense chase, its definitely more of a thriller than it is an action movie. When the action hits, its very fast. Many of the kills happen offscreen as well which may bum some people out but its a character story that is all about Katniss and Peeta.

The death of Rue has to stay the same because that guy is one of the only people she directly kills. There's no way you can change one of her only kills

Well, shocking stuff is a Japanese specialty and this story isn't all about the crazy violent kills. It's really about survival and tough decisions.

Yeah that has been bothering me, what violence are people expecting? Sure it is violent AT TIMES but overall it is not that bad. It's the idea that these are Children, though some are clearly teens in the book, killing each other for the amusement of the ones that have enslaved them in the districts. This is a story about overcoming all odds and proving that human will and determination will prevent souls from being crushed.

I'm just curious. Did anyone else find Katniss to be really annoying?

Not I. I thought Jennifer Lawrence was terrific. Definitely has the ability to play a character of this weight.

Some are complaining about her age, but in reality, I feel that circumstances should have made her more mature (emotionally at least), and there are definitely teenagers who look as grown up as she. So that's not really an issue for me.

She did strike me as a lot more mature looking/sounding than Peeta, but we'll wait to see how it looks in the film.
