I wonder if Iron Man 3's opening weekend can hit 185-190mil domestically?

Anything below 170 m would disappointing at this point,

After that massive OS opening.

It's stunning its doing this well internationally -- Avengers really gave it that boost to the next level. I originally figured this would top out around $1 billion, but it's definitely going way over that now.

I'm very curious what kind of international numbers Thor does now -- if he gets the same kind of boost.

I was originally thinking around $160, but now I'm thinking it will be closer to $180-185.

With 3D and the popularity of the Avengers it's clear nothing will touch IM3 as the top box office grosser of 2013.

Just notice the 2nd biggest OW is Harry Potter with 169 m.

If IM3 can beat it, Avengers and IM3 will have the two biggest OW in history.

Only the Hobbit has an outside chance of beating Iron Man 3 worldwide and that's a long shot.

Hunger Games 2 could possibly challenge IM3's domestic take.

Excellent opening!! Hope the US can follow suit.

I don't think the Hobbit will come that close. The first one was only a little over a billion -- if these numbers hold up IM3 should be taking in at least $850mm internationally alone. Unless the international take is heavily front loaded (and I believe there are several huge markets where it hasn't even opened yet) I don't see how Hobbit can compare.

I also see a falloff domestically from Hunger Games to Catching Fire. I think IM3 is the only movie to hit $400mm domestic this year, with CF ending up around 300-350 and a few others (Man of Steel, Despicable Me 2, Monsters University, Star Trek, Hobbit) hovering around high 200s to low 300s.

There will be a drop off. This isn't the Avengers. How much is the question.

The Hobbit sequel is hard to predict. Especially considering this is the one with Smaug and Legolas. If it is a big improvement over the first, it could do a lot more money.

You're overstating IM3's numbers. It may get $700m but $850m is a stretch.

And I have a hard time seeing CF doing <$400m DOM.

China, Russia and Germany. At least China and Russia will add BIG numbers.

Kinda makes you wonder how much of the Avengers success is due to downey and iron man? Would Avengers be as successful without RDJ or iron man? Will Winter Soldier and Dark World even reach 500 WW each? It certainly helped that RDJ is not only huge but his Iron Man is still fresh and hot in peoples minds over the last 5 years. I just don't see Cap and Thor having the same individual pull.

Maybe but it could get the same effect as the first Potter sequel. The casuals who saw it the first time might not come back for the sequel.

Well, we'll see in November :)
I do believe that T:TDW will increase quite a bit, due to not only having Thor, but Loki, too. Those two made quite the impact in Avengers. The teaser trailer has a quite respectable viewcount for a movie that is over half a year away. Then there's Disney's killer marketing...

Thor, most definitely. Cap is also very likely. Could easilly see 650-700mil for Thor and over 500mil for Cap. Thor could see an even bigger bump. Both would be spectacular.

It's ridiculous to think that in six short years Marvel has created one of the biggest and best movie franchises of all time.
Yes RDJ is clearly the star, so to say that Cap and Thor aren't going to have the same individual pull is sort of a no brainer. I mean we're talking about a movie that's probably going to make a billion dollars here. Cap and Thor definitely can't do that anytime soon, but we all know that.
But they're still going to make bank. I agree with Darth Skywalker's estimates, 650-700 for Thor and half a billion for Cap.
Not quite IM numbers obviously, but they're still mammoth franchises in and of themselves. Sort of a moot point to try and compare them to Iron Man, when they're all successful by themselves.

Those numbers might even be a bit small now. I could see Cap at 650-700 and Thor closing in on $1 B if Iron Man does what I think it will.

I am being conservative, as I mentioned in my first post. But I honestly can't see Thor doing more then 800-850mil, but perhaps I am underestimating the call of Hiddleston. :D

Cap still has a few things going against him, including being the most underwhelming Avenger in Avengers, and him being a symbol of America. I think anywhere near 600mil would be extremely good.

There is still no way of knowing how the Avengers will effect these movies. IM3 is still its own special kind of beast. We shall see.

A year ago, no one could see Avengers being a $1.5 Billion film. If Iron Man heads to the $1.2-1.3 B it's foreign opening would suggest, I see no reason why Captain America can't do half of that, and Thor can't do 2/3rds to 3/4s, based on their pre-Avengers postings.

$1,250,710,852 is my guesstimate for IM3's WW gross.

Well...heres hoping Cap and Thor are actually good this time :funny:
