The Jared Leto is The Joker(?) Thread

Leto is presumably already signed for more films. He and Affleck have been seen getting along at events. And the distaste for his portrayal is really limited mostly to boards like this, the GA seems indifferent to approving.

So I don't think it's a question of "If" but "When"

Pretty much. He's not going to just be discarded & not used because a few fans are unhappy with the version presented.

And I really don't think the film needs to be Rated R (nor will it be, anyway). When you have someone great at the helm, Batman can be written perfectly dark without going overboard to make it a hard R.

Let's leave that for characters like the Punisher where it makes sense.

Maybe so, but my point still stands.

There's no real reason why adults can't have their own version of Batman while the kids still have theirs.

Other than that a tentpole blockbuster movie *needs families to make money*?

While we forget the fact that an R rated comic book film *has made money without pandering to family sensibilities*?

Yes, one. With a miniscule budget.

I suppose you could try to convince WB to do a microbudget Batman movie. . . it wouldn't work, but you could try.

What does its budget have to do with it? Even if it were 200 million dollars, it still did nearly 800 million without China. It would've been a success either way.

While I thought Leto did a great job, I'd have no problem with him leaving if he was replaced by say...Jake Gyllenhaal.

Yeah.

I can't remember what film critic said this, but they were pretty spot-on. Visually speaking, Leto's Joker is going to feel pretty dated in a matter of years.

To be blunt, the "dated" argument is possibly one of the dumbest arguments around, especially when applied here. Is "gangsta culture" going to just up and vanish in the next few years? Is Nicholson's mobster a detriment because it "dates" that film, somehow? And honestly, even if the argument was true, WHO CARES?

Totally agreed.

Not only that but besides the deconstructed view of Batman and Superman as characters in the rest of the Snyder created DCEU on film, I don't think Leto's overly niche and prisoner of trends Joker really works in the universe.

Because everything else has a pretty classic, timeless or faithful adapted look, character wise, to the source material.

Well said.

Are you suggesting that a version of Batman for adults and a version of Batman for kids are mutually exclusive? Or that a Batman films needs to be rated R in order to be for "adults"?

Would you consider The Dark Knight to be a film that was aimed at children mostly?

Eh, even if the argument is wrong, its not nonsensical. A movie can be hurt if its reference frame is so narrow and specific that, even a few years later, it loses meaning. For example, lets say the blinged-out gangsta were an image that popped up a year ago in criminal fashion as seen by the public, and then a year later faded out. A movie that made the Joker all covered in bling might be intended to say "He is this icon of what it means to be a criminal". . . but if ten years later no one associated absurd amounts of gold jewelry with criminals, because its the hot fashion trend amongst white suburban teens whose most criminal deed is smoking a joint? You have a bit of a problem.

Basically, dating a movie isn't just about a movie being clearly a thing of its era. Its also about a movie losing comprehensibility outside its era.

Run DMC was rocking big gold chains in the 80s. Gold chains aren't going out of style.

The only thing this joker has that will be dated to me is the batman leggings(which we barely see)

Which is why I don't contest the argument is wrong. Just that worries about dating a movie aren't nonsense. It can be an issue, even if in this case it isn't.

Some more Joker footage from the extended cut

Yeah, still comes off like an emo-ass *****. I guess that's to be expected when the actor is literally a lead singer of an emo rock band, though.

I gotta admit, however... I'm excited to see that scene where Harley's pointing the gun at him. I guess I'll have my girlfriend buy the movie and just watch it with her . She liked the movie as it was , anyway.

Didn't come off as emo to me but to each their own.

He's taunting her, making her feel guilty. Not sure why that makes him emo.

Meh. None of it looks good. I hope at the very least they put in Joker slapping Harley, and give us some semblence of a proper Joker/Harley relationship instead of more of the lovesick crap like in the TC.

lol agreed. It sound so emo. Black hole of rage.

New footage look boring too.

I know I shouldn't respond to this, but we got a couple more quick lines :funny: How the hell can you judge whether it's boring?

" Black hole of rage and confusion " ? Literally sounds like some **** you'd read in an emo kid's diary or song lyrics or something.

You've got a really low standard for something to be emo.

Now, let's consider the context of this line because why not. During Joker's stay at Arkham, they (Harleen included) applied electroshock therapy and other questionable methods under the guise of helping him. Harleen keeps insisting that she was helping him and didn't mean to hurt him. Instead, those things only turned his brain into mush. That is the black hole he's talking about, and he's about to throw her into the same hole by turning the tables.

Don't waste your time, Greens. We're being inundated with people who, for some odd reason, inexplicably want Jared Leto's Joker to suck & will pick apart absolutely anything he does, even when it's perfectly in line with what the Clown Prince of Crime would do.

Broken records.

I can't wait until the actual extended cut comes out so we can judge the new scenes and not a couple of trailer lines.

I dont know if its a small majority of fans,. but most of the people who saw the movie here in Greece from the conversations i heard after the movie,. either didnt like his Joker,. or felt they needed to see more. Me personally,. i didnt like it. He didnt come off to me as crazy,. i honestly just saw him "acting crazy" if that makes any sense.
