Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

No, that’s not how art works. Tell Julian Schnabel his work is derivative of someone else’s and see if he likes that accusation.

There’s taking inspiration and then there’s basically copying another movie. Nolan used the movie Heat as inspiration for Dark Knight, but it certainly didn’t feel like he was copying it.

The King of Comedy is about a failed stand up comedian who tries to get the attention of someone more successful, and taking it too far. Throw in a little Taxi Driver, and you basically have the plot of this movie.

Yes Joaquin looks like he did a good job with it. And maybe it’s well executed. But I fail to see how this is groundbreaking or original.

If you break anything down that much EVERYTHING is derivative. The story is more than just Fleck trying to get the attention of the talk show host. That is one of many subplots.

Apparently this is the song that plays while he dances down the staircase. I can't help but think it's just the perfect song for Joker.

This film is being described as a watershed moment for comic book films similar to how The Dark Knight was

It will become the FIght Club of comic book films. A controversial masterpiece. i don't have proof but i don't have doubts.

Yeah, them being stand-up comics is the only thread that's similar. Pupkin very, very much wanted to be on the Jerry Langford show, to the point where he kidnaps him. In Joker it looks like Murray Franklin (played by Pupkin, lol) is the one who invites him. Completely different dynamics at play.

I think sport videos have ruined that song for any other use. I really don't think that's at all a perfect song for the Joker.

Mmm, never watched sport videos so i don't understand. But apparently the critics really loved that scene. Specially the Variety guy.

Well a lot of them are WOC so I don’t think they’re gonna be very positive about the movie (nor do they have an obligation to).

One "woke" Twitter critic doesn't = WOC.

And what exactly about this movie is supposedly specifically offensive to WOC anyway?

Im not exactly looking forward to this movie. But if this movie pisses off the woke people like Shaft did A+ in my book just for that

A controversial choice considering he is a convicted paedophile who is still in prison.

That would be quite a feat considering it probably didn't cost that much to make.

Speaking about DCEU, while the movies in terms of quality might still fall short of TDK, both Wonder Woman (RT 93 %) and Shazam (RT 91 %) have decent ratings and Aquaman has OK rating (RT 65 %) and it made more than 1 billion ($ 1.148 bil.), so the movies have done alright, what they need is consistency.

After me and my friends watched TDK all those years ago, I said I would love to see a joker film in the style of Taxi Driver, the type of film that let's you see what the joker gets up to when he is at home, that invites you into his mind. It feels like Todd Phillips was privy to that conversation because it looks like he has delivered exactly what I wanted, I can't wait for this.

If ATM is the last week... they haven’t owned the box office or film creativity since TDK/TDKRises.

Hmmm...

Man of Steel may only have 56% on Rotten Tomatoes - but in 2013 it outgrossed EVERY Marvel Studios film worldwide except for The Avengers and Iron Man 3. The only other movies ahead of it at the time worldwide were Spider-man films (Raimi Trilogy and Amazing Spider-man), TDK and TDKR. It was top tier in terms of box office.

Wonder Woman, with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time was the highest grossing superhero origin movie worldwide, now having been beaten by Captain Marvel, Aquaman and Black Panther.

Aquaman has a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and was the second highest grossing superhero origin movie at the time to Black Panther. Captain Marvel has since overtaken it then. It's also WB's second highest grossing film of all time.

Shazam has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. While it didn't make a billion dollars, it was still profitable and well-liked and has capacity to set up a new franchise - it was more profitable than Batman Begins or X-Men: First Class.

Now Joker, winning praise at film festivals and getting serious Oscar buzz.

In fact - aside from Justice League there hasn't been an unsuccessful DC film since TDKR commercially. And the creative lulls have been outweighed by creative highs since 2017, if you treat Justice League as the outlier.
