Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Dropped to 78% Fresh again. Would be funny if this ends with the same score as Captain Marvel.
That movie was so lame. Safe and generic, which guaranteed a reasonable RT score.

Wonder Woman was so much better if were comparing first female led superhero movies from the MCU vs the DCEU.

Well **** the Swedes! (obligatory Finn on Swede violence)

Press screening over here in Finland as well, two reviews I've seen so far published, one on the only movie magazine still surviving over here (print business doing poorly globally etc.) gave it 5/5 where as one popular website gave it 3½/5 (mostly due to Phoenix, said not enough original plot on the actual movie).

Perkele! Glad to find another Finn here. We're a rare breed it it seems.

Going to see the movie tomorrow. Can't wait.

Yeah. General audiences don't go in to watch a movie about Batman's archnemesis expecting to /only/ get a depressing and violent view on the world for 2 hours with no light at the end of the tunnel.

If there was any sort of Batman tease at the end and they knew that it was gonna pay off that way, they'd forgive it a lot more but as it stands it's absolutely going to disappoint general audiences because they don't eat miserable ultra realistic content like this if it doesn't have what they consider a payoff.

Uhhh...people in America already know what this movie is and how it has almost no shot at Batman being in it. It hasnt been hidden at all that the film is dark and bleak. In fact that was why people were hyped up for it. This movie has spent all its time showing the audience exactly what it is. People would have to be willfully ignoring it all or living in a cave not to understand.

Some might be the way you say they are but to say it is an over-generalization would be kind.

And it isnt like Americans havent supported dark and bleak before or even slow and plodding. If a movie is enjoyable they go see it.

I very much doubt this movie is "enjoyable", I may be wrong, I haven't seen it, but it seems like its biggest strength it's that it's pretty miserable and feels like it's punching you in the face.Which is a great form of art.. but it's kinda niche

And you're overstimating how familiar audiences are with this movie. Half the people on the world can barely tell Marvel and DC apart... you expect them go go into a Joker movie and not be disapppointed Batman isn't hinted in anyway?

OK so what if the movie has 78%? It's still certified fresh. Phillips and Phoenix made a polarizing, divisive movie.

Right.

It's a violent, nihilistic movie dealing with a mentally-ill psychopath. It's not going to be for everybody. Folks need to chill a bit with this obsession over the critical rating. If it's any consolation, barring a major dump of negative reviews the next few days, the movie will likely stay north of 70%. That's good. Literally zero reason to get worked up.

I think what some of this comes down to is that some comic book fans want comic book movies so badly to be taken "seriously." They want them to be seen as worthy of such serious praise and cultural relevancy.

Now box office dollars is good and all, but a "comic book movie" to get awards and best picture talk, that raises the bar. I think some fans are just too desperate for that to happen here.

I will say that with the reviews and the PR issues, a Best Picture nomination may be a long shot now. Unless the industry just falls in love with this thing. It happened with Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book just last year. Sometimes there's a disconnect between the industry and the critics. However, the key difference here is that BR and GB were classic Oscar bait whereas this film is not.

Again, this could be one of those rare exceptions, but Joker really needed critical acclaim to break through.

Such an amazing movie. It’s really slow but very tempting.

Also, there are HUGE REFERENCE to Batman. I think WB will base on the movie’s reception to form a new DCEU around Pattison’s Batman and Phoenix’s Joker.

Guys, Spain really loved this film. It has the highest score of the year at Filmaffinity. Almost every review is 10/10.

What do you think they will go into this film expecting to get? Sunshine and rainbows?

The marketing/messaging of this film has been explicitly clear from the start, along with all of the recent TV/Internet news, reviews, controversy, and Internet conversation surrounding the film over the past few months -- this is a dark, depressing, violent, "hard" R-rated film about a psychotic killer with no Batman present. Most of the adults who choose to see the film will know what they're getting into, for the most part.

Sounds kinda like you're projecting your own thoughts/feelings about the film onto the GA.

I asked myself that question too. Both Grace Randolph and Jeremy Jahns are nothing but clickbait, **** stirring youtubers that will do ANYTHING for clicks. like Jeremys recent star wars video filled with inaccuracies. I've lost a ton of respect for him.

His Captain Marvel review was nothing but clickbait. It left me wondering if he even saw it as it seemed he completely missed some plot points or elements.

A little bit. It does annoy me that we're never going to see this Joker fight Batman, but still: This is a slow burner nihilistic and depressing film in which Joker doesn't even appear until the last half hour. On top of the Batman problem, audiences will go in expecting to see much more Joker than they are actually getting. This movie is basically a trojan horse.

I'm sure it's great for what it is, but don't expect everyone to eat this up, it's gonna be mixed. I kinda expect a 50%-60% audience score.

I don't know, man. This is getting insane praise at Letterboxd and Filmaffinity... until now, ofc. But right now it's looking really good.
We will just have to wait and see.

One thing I didn't quite catch in the movie
So who abused Arthur ? Like why did he kill his mother ? Is it because she allow her boyfriend to abuse Arthur ?

In France people are insanely hyped, and word is out about the content of the movie. They know what to expect ( and the critics are out of this world ) i should find out about this puppy in two days

I'm wondering about going on Saturday to the small local theater but since I was spoiled on the talk show scene (thank you Youtube thumbnails, accidentally move you mouse over it and it plays exactly that part), though I was expecting it and sort of knew it was coming, I'm re-thinking about it. Just the whole concept of an "alternative origin story" is not really alluring for me. Talked with a few older gaming friends yesterday and they were semi-interested but as soon as I told about the concept (Elseworlds type) and no Batman, they dropped interest.
