Forgot to say I read some reactions claiming there was laughter at the most inappropriate moments which lent to the "toxic" tag of this film; I can tell you that there was zero laughter in my viewing. Arthur is a grim, non glorifying portrayal of a very disturbed man.
I just watched Joker last night and the movie made me sympathize with Arthur or at the very least have compassion for Arthur. It was society that drove him into becoming what he would ultimately become well that and his upbringing. That alone would cause any sane person to snap especially if you have been kicked around so much mentally and emotionally.

It's difficult not to have sympathy for him. The only aspect I was disappointed with was the
neighbour storyline as it was telegraphed from early on what was really going on. I can see how that inspired the annoying "incel" criticism. It was an unneccessary cliche. The film would have been none the worse without it and we wouldn't have to listen to half the annoying ****e surrounding the film.
The more i think about this film, the more I think it's done its job really really well. it's different, and makes you ask questions as well as having a lot of ambiguity to it. it's its own thing that we are meant to dissect ourselves, which I think is something that is needed for a film that is about a character that doesn't have a definitive origin.
Heath acted like Joker but didn't look like him. Jack looked like him and somewhat acted like him but was more Jack. Joaquin basically gave us the birth of an icon from humble beginnings to the inevitable endgame. All three have their merits but seeing someone's descent into madness will always take the cake.
I have to disagree about Heath not looking like the Joker. Other than the fact he used makeup and his skin wasn't "perma-white" I thought he looked great.
Caught this movie last night and loved it. The violence is not as extreme as most are saying. I do understand that what violence this film does have (especially one scene in particular) can come off as a bit more brutal since this movie feels more real world than typical comic book films. There is a level of seriousness to it that not all but most comic book movies don't have.
Phoenix was fantastic in the role and I really have a hard time picking my favorite live action interpretation of this character. Over the decades so many comic writers have come and gone and since the character is insane it's easy to stay in the lines as far as staying true to the character while adding a bit of your own ideas and quirks to him. That's what makes it hard to pick if I had to. This is a totally different version compared to the live action versions that came before, just like Ledger was to Nicholson. I think I'll say Ledger is still my favorite. After Ledger if I'm just going off of performance then it's Joaquin just below him. If I want to bring in some bias due to being a huge fan of the comics and going for a bit more accuracy over performance than I think Nicholson (even give a shout out to Romero) edges Phoenix out but barely.
I always enjoyed Nicholson in the role but agree with so many others that he was playing himself being a bit silly and didn't truly fall into the character. I will say this about Jack's version though, he still has one of the greatest Joker scenes/moments in a move that will always be at the top. The one where he's having a conversation with the mob boss's burnt corpse that he fried with the hand buzzer.
As most have said, the score, cinematography and overall direction was superb. I see that some people who liked it said they don't have a desire to watch it again which I can understand. With that being said, there are movies out there that although very grim or dark I'll rewatch if the lead actor or overall cast give some great performances.
Overall the drama over this film is absolutely ridiculous and I don't feel it's glorifying violence or even trying to get people to sympathize with "incels". It's just the media and so called "professional critics/journalists" stirring the pot for ratings and clicks. If anything this movie is more about sympathizing a bit with people with mental illness that get ignored or crapped on. I'm definitely not on Arthur Fleck's level or a lot of other people with a legit mental illness but as someone who suffers from severe depression, when you're around people and depression hits hard it can be mentally exhausting pretending to be happy so as not to be a "downer". That line in his journal hit home with me. "The worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don't". In my experience far too many people are quick to judge others without stopping to think if there are more issues beneath the surface and assume they are either a buzzkill or even socially awkward on the level of being written off as a "creep".
I really think this movie deserves multiple viewings due to
the similarity with Taxi Driver and how it makes you question if most of the last act was all in his head. Personally I like to think it all happened but having it be insane delusions is a nice idea to seperate it from past versions.
Not sure if this is a spoiler, it's about Phoenix's laugh.
I absolutely loved how they decided to give Fleck that condition involving uncontrollable laughing when he's nervous. Had to look it up but it's called Pseudobulbar affect. That was a nice change instead of going the normal route and having him just laugh all the time due to being/going insane.
I'm glad this is a one-off kind of film. I hope director Todd Phillips and Joaquin don't change their mind down the road and make a follow up. I'm not even talking about tying it to Reeve's upcoming Batman film because let's be honest, that is Not going to happen. Not even because of the time difference but it sounds like with how many villains he's using and which ones, I don't think his film is going to be grounded like this one or even Nolan's trilogy for that matter.
I think it's closer to the true essence of The Joker than anything we've seen in live action. But I guess that's all subjective from person to person on what they prefer in the character.
I don't want to get into spoilers, but Todd Phillips was very clever with the way he handles your expectations and perceptions. You see it throughout the movie, but he really lays it out in the very last scene of the movie.
I think he nailed it. I'm shocked by how much it worked for me. I absolutely loved this movie. This is easily a day one purchase when it comes to home video. I hope they fill it with extras on the blu ray/4k. I'm also going to see it 2-3 more times while it's in theaters. I loved it!

Yeah, I'll go into the spoilers thread in a bit. But man, I'm still high on this movie. I saw it last night, and I just want to go see it again.
Scorsese is my favorite director of all time, and I know Todd Phillips was borrowing a lot from his films, but I'm actually glad he did, cause this movie just worked for me.I was expecting to rag on Todd Phillips, but the movie is great. There's just one minor hiccup for me, but other than that, it is truly one of the best CBMs ever made, and it's just a great movie all around. Hell, I may go see it again today? I just wanna watch it again....
Well, well, what a strange movie going experience that was. Not what I was expecting at all, in some ways.
Needless to say that Phoenix's commitment to the part is outstanding. In fact, the performances are good all round. Also, the cinematography is fabulous. The aesthetic of this Gotham is great. A vast, grubby, sprawling metropolis that feels lived in and real.
But I don’t know... the whole thing felt... quite tame?
I can hardly believe I’m saying that, but from all the buzz in went in expecting a shocking, original, controversial movie. And what I got was a well constructed, but ultimately very predictable character drama.
Colour me amazed. The most shocking thing about this movie is how shocking it isn’t!
This isn’t the origin of the clown prince of crime, that’s for certain. It’s the story of a sad little man who takes small but violent acts of revenge on a horrible city, dressed as a clown and carrying a hand gun.
A perfectly decent movie... but not one that is the groundbreaking game changer some have claimed it to be!

It’s not even necessarily a complaint from me. But I was surprised.
I wasn’t expecting to come out of this film feeling like Phoenix’s Joker is less dangerous and scary than Ledger’s.
But then, I don’t think this was the intention of this movie. They weren’t trying to show us the creation of THE JOKER, they were trying to tell a self contained story about a man’s descent into madness... which they did a very sound job of doing.
