Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Ok so... I really want this film to make a Billie! And I think it could but I have been looking at the numbers and it might fall just short at $969 million depending on the drops. ...And this is just a guess.

So I was looking at the comparison chart on Box Office Mojo between Joker, Venom, and Logan. I am able to view it the old school way because ever since Box Office Mojo(BOM) made those stupid updates, I refused to close the window I had open prior to the updates because the old BOM website just had more details. Anyway, needless to say, the joker numbers I have on that chart stops on the 21st because BOM updated the next day. So looking at it Joker, it's 4th domestic week is comparable to Venom and Logan's 3rd domestic week.

This weekend's 18.9 box office total is slightly stronger than venom and logans 3rd-weekend box office total. and that counts as jokers 4th weekend btw which is a good thing. So it should end its 4th week around 23+ million like how venom and Logan ended their 3rd. And if things continue like this chart domestically it will go on to gross:

  • 14 million week 5
  • 10 million week 6
  • 7 million week 7
  • 3 million week 8
  • 1 million week 9
And so on and so forth by the end of its domestic run, it should gain an additional 40 million give or take for a +/- $317.5 domestic total.

Now if we look at the international numbers in a similar way, and I am no expert by any means, This is just a guestimate. It just ended an $80 million week. cutting it in half every week from here:

  • 40 million
  • 20 million
  • 10 million
  • 5 million
  • 2 million
  • 1 million
That adds up to $79 million give or take. when you add that with the 40 million that should be made domestically and the 850 million already in the bank, that adds up to $969 million

Now I hope it will make more, but I am not 100% certain it will crack a Billie. Either way, wherever it lands we should be happy. And I sure hope it cracks a billion Gitesh Pandya sure thinks it has a good shot and he is WAY more experienced at this than I will ever be. I was just doing peabrain math with no true understanding of how things work.

Ive been saying it wont hit a billion since the start despite the big numbers.

Your projections are correct but they dont take into account the hit Joker will take from Midway and Dark Fate AND the fact that OS numbers will take a steep decline after next week due to the fact it opened a week earlier.

A billion isnt happening.

Well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Either way, it has had a fantastic run. Also, I saw that Dark Fate was released in many Markets already including some key European markets(France, Germany and the UK, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore) and the trades are saying that it's not doing all that well(not to say it's doing horribly). In fact, They said that Joker took the top spot in some of those markets that Terminator was already released in. And still holds the number 1 spot in Europe overall among other places.

Joker Nears $850M WW; Terminator: Dark Fate Unlucky At $13M Offshore Bow – Deadline

I'm not saying that it will stay #1 in all those places. A $40 million week internationally certainly leaves plenty of room for other movies to take the top spots while it still hits that mark let alone the projected marks I set for the coming weeks(keep in mind I am talking full week not just weekend). They aren't really high marks to reach and appear to be in line with what most movies tend to do at the global box office at this stage of their box office run. Especially when audiences seem to embrace them which as we have seen it appears Joker is one of those movies that audiences seemed to have embraced.

I mean I'm definitely the type of guy who likes to take the wait and see approach but I do feel like my projection seems likely and of course, because I am a fan, I have my fingers crossed for even more.

So happy about the success of this movie. DC finally has achieved another “Dark Knight” phenomenon. Its not just a huge financial success, its penetrating the social zeitgeist the same way TDK did in 2008. Joker is ALL over social media.

This is the way i’ve always said it should be. DC’s success should not be in copying Marvel’s cinematic universe model. DC’s specialty had always been the one off “graphic novel” approach. Get great visionary directors and writers with crazy ideas and let them go wild with these characters.

I think the way forward for DC film is through independent stuff like Joker and Matt Reeves' upcoming Batman movie that is free to do its own thing unencumbered by ties to a greater continuity. The DCEU is a bungled hot mess that was fundamentally misconceived.

I think it's possible to achieve success in doing both. You can have a universe of characters interacting in the way that the DC comics universe works, while continuously having alternative versions like this Joker in one shots, also in the way DC Comics does it. I've always been invested in the DC Comics universe of major characters interacting so the one off graphic novels aren't the only area where they can be strong.

Midway has almost zero hype (the trailers are mediocre at best) and Dark Fate is going to ridiculously underperform. (already started underperforming abroad) It is going to go higher than you think.

Yeah, and dont get me wrong, I wanna see the DC characters team up in a Justice League movie one day, too. But i dont think they need to do it Marvel’s way. I like notion that each film DC produces operates as its own singular entity that doesnt rely upon a greater narrative. Aquaman will have its own distinct look and feel much different than that of Wonder Woman and yet the two can still one day potentially crossover.

What opened a week earlier?
Joker was playing since late September in OS markets.
2 ,3 ,4 ,5 or 6 days earlier from the USA.

Its quite possible i wouldnt be surprised i just dont see the legs holding for that long.
What it has achieved already is quite remarkable and $950 mil is no small feat.

Not true. Honestly all your Joker b.o. related posts read like you're a troll or biased or simply have no idea what you're talking about.
And if anything Terminator already opened in few big markets so no reason why Joker should dip more next weekend. More cgance it can cross 900M on sunday.

Yes, this sounds fine to me.

Thats correct , i didnt check the dates. Had the impression from memory it started playing earlier.
But still with the previews it had everywhere thats still 4 , 3 or 2 days of advanced screenings that can do the job.

We ll compare the drops next week.

Yes thats correct. Im the troll who had 1 of the 2 highest votes in the box office prediction thread.
Not many votes were cast but still.

Also iirc i have Joker my n2 rated movie of the year.

the more i think about todd phillips' joker, the more it reminds me of 1997's "Made in Hong Kong"

it's like joker's more arthouse, asian cousin.
it is less disturbing, but i feel it is equally as sad and bleak.

the story even has some parallels to joker:

- a poor, disenfranchised young man lives in the projects of hong kong with his mother, pressure from all the bad circumstances around him causes him to lose hope and he resorts to violence at the end.

for all you arthouse aficionados, check it out if you can.
it might be hard to find, i watched in on vhs about 20 years ago

this was made right around when hk was handed over back to china.
they'll probably never movies like this again in hong kong.

Saw it this weekend. Still not sure what I think about it. First the visuals when not in makeup were great. My only make-up issue was still the blue diamonds. This Joker isn't confident or driven to watch the world burn. Plus you sort of feel bad for him which is weird. It also get away from the question of whether Batman inspired the Joker or Joker preexisted by pretty emphatically saying in this world he existed prior to Batman, and that Batman beats up the mentally ill. In his final act on TV he pretty much even sets himself up as a warrior for the mentally ill and social programs.

Good elseworlds piece and examination but not something I'm sure I want more of, and while it had tinges of Joker wasn't really right as "The Joker" to me.

$900m getting ever closer. These numbers must be confusing the hell out of the suits. Now we're going to get ultra-grim Barbie and My Little Pony to follow up.

I'm sure part of it is just the right time of year for creepy films.

I'm fine with the blue diamonds. They remind me of the old Neal Adams drawings where the Joker often had blue bags under his eyes. And I disagree about the Joker not being driven to watch the world burn. Look at his face when he sees the riots occurring towards the end of the movie. He's absolutely euphoric at the sight. He's found his calling. And that's the point of the whole film: him finding himself. I also disagree that he sets himself up as a warrior for the mentally ill. At various points throughout the film he says he's not political at all. He's just a narcissist who cares only about himself and his position in life.

Nah. History shows they are slow learners.

It will take at least 10 more Joker movies for them to have a light bulb go off inside their heads and say "we can make more R-Rated films".

I meant also that they will learn the wrong lesson and start making their ultra family friendly properties unnecessarily into Joker style lol.
