This whole film sounds super dependent on the lead performance. There doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of plot machinations (if leaks are to be believed), so the downfall of Fleck is going to be entirely dependent on how well Joaquin sells it.

If the leaks are to be believed, it sounds like a rather straight forward story that doesn't appear to have much to actually say... other than echoing the themes of The Dark Knight Rises (which is a bit bizarre).

My interest in this has plummeted somewhat, especially now that we have a confirmed Batman, and a confirmed Batman movie that is unconnected to Batfleck.

This Joker movie just feels a bit redundant now.

Hey ho. It might be an enjoyable piece of cinema, but as an addition to the Batman mythos, it doesn't really seem to justify its own existence beyond being a Joaquin Phoenix vehicle.

That's really been the only hook for me, honestly. But it's working so far. Might not get around to it opening weekend, but they've got my money.

I would argue this is pretty daring and original for it's genre or todays mosaic of comicbook movies lol

Completely disagree. Name one film besides Logan (?) that really takes a deep psychological character study approach to an iconic character. Keep in mind, this plot leak might be completely false and you should wait to see it on the big screen instead of forming your opinion on rough synopsis.

Character driven movies usually do not have big twists or complex stories. Their key points are: The acting, and the dialogue. They are just simple movies and sometimes those are the best ones. Not sure what were some guys expecting. Take Logan and The Shining as examples: simple story, but the acting, dialogue, cinematography and everything makes it incredible. You will not see movies like this in a long time from the comic book genre.

I'd be much more excited about this film if Martin Scorsese was directing but since Phillips is directing I can't really describe my feelings towards this as anything other than a morbid curiosity. The trailer sort of got me on board this film but it never convinced me one or another that this movie was going to stick the landing and be amazing. It could go either way quality wise -- it could be the at best thing since slice bread -- or it could be godawful but no matter what this movie got my money.

The Joker is favorite comic book villain followed closely by Doctor Doom so I am rooting for this film even if I suspect it will ultimately get less the stellar critical/audience reception. Phoenix's performance alone is the main selling point of the film for me.

Some people think Todd Phillips may not be the best choice for this movie, but I think he really is. He's a good director with a classic vibe who does not rely on CGI. And just the cinematography is incredible.

The guy always knew how to direct a movie it's just that those he made didn't have really deep content, only comedies. With War Dogs, he showed he could direct something more serious if you can say, plus, it had a Scorsese vibe.

I think as a filmmaker he just want to step up his game and it's not for nothing Joaquin said yes, apparently he's not the easiest actor to get for a role and he said that Todd was fascinated and deep into the project and that's what got him on board.

Agreed, for a variety of reasons. I think this has the potential to really hit a host of ideas and issues people sometimes do not want to really take a thorough look at.

Personally, I really had not given this movie a thought prior to the trailer being released. After I saw the trailer, it is a must see movie for me. Even if it fails, I have the sense would fail gloriously.

Oh I have no doubt in my mind Phoenix will deliver an amazing performance as this seems the type of movie that will ride or die based on your impression of the character studied.

I read the potential spoilers. Doesn't sound too bad or too far from what I was expecting. Still don't understand why you would establish a Joker that is twice Batman's age (again), though I know some versions of the character have implied that he's actually evil incarnate or something so maybe he doesn't actually age past a certain point. Anyway, I guess a lot of it will hinge on Phoenix, and I'm sure he'll deliver.

I know that but it still seems like an odd choice because the implication is obviously that Bruce eventually becomes Batman.
