That's definitely what I got from the leaked interview scene. Although the clip is fairly brief, Phoenix's Joker felt very human, to me. Which might be disappointing to some, if only because it erases the air of mystery that surrounds the Joker, and that sense he's a criminal mastermind who has some sense of control. With Ledger's Joker, there was a feeling that he was a step ahead of everyone else, and he was almost inscrutable.
This new Joker, however, comes off as being a pitiful and petulant man. And, rather naked. Because his motives are crystal clear. This isn't the Joker as the "clown prince of crime". This is the Joker as a bitter, angry, misfit. Watching these clips makes me understand the concerns some critics are having about this movie, because here, the Joker feels like a human being, more so than he ever has been before. Which might be jarring for those that are expecting the typical, blade in shoe tip Joker we're used to.
