Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

We don't know the true origin of modern Joker. However, Pre-Crisis Joker was given a definitive origin, one written by Bill Finger no less.
While that is true, I always felt it was more open to interpretation. We can always look at that as being THE origin for the character and the most likely one, but I still love the idea of the ambiguity of it all. But yes, you are correct

only a few more weeks left!! Im ready

An average rating of 7.12 with a 44% tomato meter? Haven't seen anything like that in a while.

From what I'm hearing, I'm really going to enjoy this movie. Has anyone here seen it?

This. The whole “Joker shouldn’t have an origin!!!!” thing is kind of revisionist history. The fall into the vat of chemicals had been the character’s origin for decades.

That's not what people mean by defined origin. The fall into the chemicals is just the way he got his perma white skin. Who he was, what his background was, the circumstances that led to the fall into the chemicals is the part that is not defined. He could have been the failed comedian, a gangster, a weirdo out looking for thrills etc. That's the undefined mystery element.

To me I like what I am hearing about this version of The Joker. I mean in all honesty the Joker should never be "funny".

I disagree. When I think of all the great Jokers, they all had the ability to get a laugh out of you. Whether it was because of a one liner, or even doing something villainous.

I mean is anyone here going to tell me that there was no laughter from their movie audience during the Nurse Joker sequence in TDK for example?

There was plenty at my theater at all 4 viewings. People loved it haha

I agree but I see those things more as irony or trying to sneak into things then trying to be funny.

I don't. I see that as the dark humor of the character. I mean when you think about that aforementioned sequence for example, Joker could have tried to get into Dent in the hospital dressed as a Cop, a male nurse or Doctor, a janitor, a paramedic etc. But no he goes in drag as a female Nurse, complete with an "I believe in Harvey Dent" badge on his chest :funny:

Ledger was very funny, which I was very happy about. There's a tightrope to walk with Joker between being legitimately funny and legitimately scary. Ledger walked that effortlessly, and it's part of why that version of the character is so revered. There ought to always be something very charismatic and alluring about the Joker. I don't know how necessarily funny this version will be, but I'm sure it will be captivating to watch, not just for the audience but for the other characters in the film as well.

It's funny every time. And then when he pretends to forget Rachel's name just to rile Harvey up. Gold.

I think maybe i will prefer Phoenix. Don't get me wrong, i love Ledger, but from what i saw in the leaks, Phoenix is scary AF. He truly acts like a complete psychopath.

There are going to be a lot of comparisons with the two but there really shouldn't be. They're very different characters, complete opposites in a sense. Ledger was playing a character essentially without an arc, a guy with no established history that doesn't change at all in the story, whereas Phoenix is playing a very defined arc with a beginning and end. You're meant to empathize with Arthur Fleck as the protagonist and human being (at the beginning anyway), but Ledger is something inhuman, unknowable, more akin to the shark in Jaws than Travis Bickle.

^^ exactly. One is an unstoppable force of nature, while the other is a man that slowly goes mad.

If we can’t compare two actors playing the same character (albeit written differently), what can we compare?

Most people understand there are inherent differences to their portrayals. Comparing and contrasting isn’t really a bad thing, or doesn’t have to be.

Just the clips are enough for me to say that JP is better. And looks like it's by far >>>
Blinded fans remains delusionals, so don't care. Especially with a dead actor in this case.
Also, Ledger best performance is Brokeback Mountain

So you're saying he's better based on clips rather than judging the entire performance. But people who are going to prefer Ledger are blind and delusional just because the actor is dead?

So much offensiveness, stupidity and hypocrisy in just a few short lines. I'm actually impressed.

Having a different opinion isn't being blinded. This movie isn't even released yet. It's totally fair people prefer Ledger until they see Phoenix or after they do. Both are incredible actors.

This is sad, but true. I've noticed a trend lately where people are trying to bring an old thing down due to how long its been hailed a classic. I'll never understand the mindset and I never will. If a film or a portrayal is still regarded as the best for over a decade, that's a testament for how incredible it truly is.

for the record, Ledgers Joker is up there with Vader as one of the most iconic villains ever. no matter what anybody says, it'll never change.

If Phoenix is as good as they're saying, do you guys think the Joker could be more iconic than Vader?

You'll see plenty more of it. This is the classic fanboy cycle. Trash the old to make the new look better. It happened plenty back in the Letoker days. Which is really funny in hindsight seeing as how that turned out.

Absolutely. It also happened with the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy once TASM was coming and we saw how THAT turned out as well.

I haven't called to no one in particular blind, was a general comment (which it's true, i can bring you examples). And you can like whoever you want. I said for me

Part of me kinda just figured he actually, genuinely forgot (which is potentially funnier)
