Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

I think that in today's climate if you released TAXI DRIVER, you'd get a lot of the exact same reactions from many of the same quarters. It being the Joker gives it a higher profile but given the real world conditions, the online culture, the fact that we are in a time of a lot of mass shootings by people that often leave "manifestos" about how they see the world... Nah, I think even if you took away the Joker from the equation, a talent like Phoenix in a Scorcese produced film doing a sort of 21st Century TAXI DRIVER at a major studio... I think we'd still see some hand wringing.

I think the only recent film that comes close to that sort of lone wolf psycho premise is Nightcrawler. It's less about disenfranchisement than Joker and Taxi Driver, though.

Phillips' comments about "making a real movie" under the guise of a comic book film rub me the wrong way a bit. I wouldn't have a problem with someone like Scorsese saying that, because he's made some amazing films. Phillips hasn't. He hasn't earned the right to say that yet, IMO. Maybe he has after this film; we'll see. But before this, he was the guy who made mostly d-bag comedies like the Hangover trilogy and Due Date. He should have been more worried about making a "real" movie for his own credibility than trying to one-up Marvel or whoever.

Still want to see the film and I think it looks great, but he comes off like an A-hole when he says things like that.

Yeah, such a movie was always going to be contentious to a degree, but the convo swirling around Joker has become a perfect storm because of the movie's themes (mental illness, disenfranchised white man, gun violence), the political reality of the states, the clown world meme (a 4chan, alt-right adjacent symbol) and the iconocity of Joker himself.

It did manage to be the first comic book movie to win the Golden Lion Award. So I think he did earn some merit there.

Also, he was in second place for best director at TIFF and had American Psycho's director praise his film.

Phillips comments on a lot of things rub me the wrong way, he doesnt strike me as a likeable person...but that is not making or breaking things.
Of course the way he handles the concerns of people is dumb as hell and hurts the cause, but in the end it matters little what kind of person he is if he does a good movie.
Everybody has to start somewhere, maybe the Joker is the movie that Elevates him...who knows.
We will need to see.

Honestly, i firmly believe they knew what they were getting into when making the movie.
I have a hard time believing that they all could be so tone deaf and blind during the whole process...especially in a country like america.
Its why i cant understand why they tackle this stuff outside of the movie so badly, why they react to the concerns and so on in a incredible dumb manner.
It makes things a lot harder than they need to be for the movie, fans etc.

Bro-comedy tropes and all, I stand by the Hangover as a movie that's going to age like wine.

I don't mind him talking a big game because he apparently made something really interesting. Only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was him pretending to not understand why his movie isn't being treated the same as John Wick.

Look, I know I’ve already pissed people off here for my posts about me “judging” this before it’s out but that comment he made was supremely arrogant.

So Coogler, Jenkins, Nolan, Gunn, Waititi, Branaugh, Faverau, Del Toro, Burton, Raimi, Donner, the Russos, Wan, Sandberg, Whedon, and Trey Parker (Orgazmo, anyone?) aren’t real filmmakers?

Goddammit stop laser focusing on a simple comment he made. He obviously didn't mean it like that. In another intervirw he praised Marvel saying they're really good at what they do but he wanted to do something different.

So Arthur's actually grown up watching Murray on the television. That must be especially painful, to have a man you've idolised suddenly make a mockery out of you on national television. This is going to be a deliciously mean spirited movie.

Tis' also the only pitch that gets him someone like Phoenix to sign up.

Looks like I'll be watching the most violent movie next Friday. :o

If they did a character study film for Harley Quinn much like they did for Joker like how Joaquin has...would her movie sell

I believe it would but definitely not as much. Harley works best when she's bouncing off of other characters, so I think a film like that would obviously need Joker.

Jason Momoa, James Gunn, and the Suicide Squad cast went to the premiere to see it. So none of the other CBM actors and directors seem to be offended by what he said. Just like Black Narcissus said, Phillips only said that to get Phoenix to join the movie.

Long time lurker. I am pretty excited about this movie -- been trying to temper my anticipation to enjoy the film more this time around (didn't exactly happen for TDK). Disappointed in the "controversy" surrounding the movie, people are going to do what they do. I really love actors that get into their characters and look forward to adding this movie to my home collection. With all the lovely cinematography, looking forward to what box art, etc. they come up with.

Either way this film is making a lot of bank for DC so this should be a good thing
