Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Box Office: 'Joker' Has the Last Laugh With Record $96M U.S. Bow, $247M Globally

Todd Phillips' Joker had the last laugh in its box office debut, earning a huge $96 million domestically from 4,374 theaters to set a new opening record for the month of October despite heightened security at cinemas across the U.S.

That's up from Sunday's estimate $93.5 million, which was likewise a record. And international numbers came in notably higher than Sunday estimates, or by more than $10 million.

The dark, R-rated supervillain movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as a mentally ill misfit turned homicidal maniac did even more business overseas, raking in $151 million from more than 70 markets for a global start of $247 million (it doesn't yet have a release date in China). Both figures likewise set new benchmarks for the month.

I heard it needed to make 10 times its budget to break even...it is a BO failure!!!! :o

*gets Gotham flashbacks*

No. Please, god no.

I legit thought that was sarcasm at first. Her Twitter bio is also unintentionally hilarious. :funny:

Ah, so there's still some hope for humanity. It really came across as sarcasm to me at first, so at least that's reassuring with full context.

DC’s third consecutive win in a row (even though Shazam’s BO succes is a little dubious). I hope this is the start of a new niche for DC. Smaller, intimate, maybe a little grittier films..but they dont all have to be about villain origins, they could do a Catwoman movie or Batgirl or Green Arrow...lower level street characters that dont demand big budgets. Do smaller intimate character pieces.

So it just went from the fifth biggest worldwide debut ever for an R-rated movie to essentially tied for third, passing Fifty Shades of Grey ($242.4M), tying Logan ($247.4M), and going behind only Deadpool 1 ($264.7M) & 2 ($300.4M). It should be locked for $600M+ total, and with a couple more markets left to open in, $700M+ worldwide seems like a strong possibility.

It’s not to far fetched from what people are saying on twitter tho. About gun violence when a gun is shown like 2 times in the movie

I don't think that's the point.
They shouldn't focus on smaller, intimate character pieces from now on (unless it really fits). They need to focus on giving each character the right space and genre, without chickening out and resorting to "comic book movie cliches." I mean, even with the more fantastical characters and takes there's a chance to do things differently. Just look at how different Tim Burton's and Christopher Nolan's versions of Batman are. Find the right director, and give him/her the freedom to make proper movies and delve into these characters' worlds.

To be fair, it's difficult to tell what's supposed to be ironic than not since there are folks on that website that would unironically make statements like this. Especially with this movie.

I tend to trust nothing on Twitter that doesn’t come from a recognisable, known source. It helps... a little.

Well what i meant was not exclusively do those going forward but have them co-exist with the big budget blockbuster films like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Batman etc. You can have those tentpoles and then on the side have the Black Label “indie” stuff thats low budget and focuses on character pieces for lower level characters who dont need huge budgets and can let the directors do what they want creatively without having any effect on the tentpole films.

Yeah, I get. I'm all for more adult, lower budget takes on DC Comics characters. But I also hope that they learn the same lesson for their tentpoles. Give the directors creative freedom, and allow them to make bold decisions. We already have too many cookie cutter comic book adaptations which all feel the same.

This is a spoof account, run by a British comedian (male). Don’t believe everything you see on Twitter.

I was posting it cause it was funny...it is blatantly obvious it wasnt serious.

But thanks for the lesson on the internet...I have only been using it since the 1990s ;)

edit: I didnt mean that to sound as mean as it might have. I should have added the sarcasm smilie so here it is on the edit! :o
