I don't know if you guys know that but 2 things about this movie from my home country of Greece.
1) The movie is pacing to be the highest grossing movie of the decade there.
2) During the weekend the police raided 2 cinemas with 50 cops to get under-aged viewers. That has escalated to a political fight between the government and the opposition prompting for changes in laws since the parents of those kids are about to be prosecuted for not taking care of their minors.
As a result the movie is on public TV on every major network having the Members of Parliament debating about the film and the messages.
P.S. Our ex- prime minister Tsipras loved the c***p out of this movie and he was prompting people to go and see it saying that he could not believe that a Hollywood film of this kind could be made at this time.
Joker passed $30m in Japan and $50m in sight.
can't believe how well it's doing, it already surpassed almost every DC or MCU movies and will surpass Avengers ($36m), Age of Ultron ($32m), Infinity War ($33m) in a coming week. i don't think it can top Endgame ($66m) but the fact that Joker is becoming one of the biggest CBM of all time here in Japan put smile on my face.
I'm late to the game here, but I just saw Joker last night.
It's the epitome of a slow burn or a storm brewing afar. The last act is something that is so real and so unsettling that I can see why people who aren't of sound mind or teetering that way can take this as an anthem. The most important thing for people to realize is that this is a movie and this character is for entertainment purposes only. Seeing how people are using this movie as a catalyst for violence and/or non-peaceful protest is concerning. If this carries over to the states, it may affect the film's long-term runs as I would see theaters over-react and pull it from screens. I probably sound like an old fart.
Be that as it may, this was a great movie. As everyone has said, Phoenix was phenomenal. I found myself hoping Batman would show up at the end of this because of Arthur's turn and the state of Gotham.
I'm all over the place here, but how can this not be set up for a future Batman implementation, especially with the money it's raking in?
The iconic scene of the Wayne's being murdered and that beautiful shot of Bruce standing in between his parents and staring down the alleyway...why show this if not setting up something down the road?

Also why is AOC moaning about the Joker now as well lol
“The Bronx is much safer now and I’m happy to say that,” AOC says. But she’d be happier if the tourists didn’t take their selfie sticks to her home borough. “I think the way a lot of us feel is, listen, like, keep your Instagram posts outside of the Boogie Down. Like, this is for us.”
SMH im not gonna lie I probably wouldn't go just to get my pic on a set of stairs but a hell of a lot of people likely are visiting now who wouldn't have previously.
i read about the split personality theory for this movie and i think it holds water.
arthur being right handed, while joker is left handed.
the different style of handwriting in his joke book and the mentioning of "him"
and drastic change in posture and demeanor once he is "joker"
the movie isn't a comic book movie but a psychological horror instead.
it's really about a man who breaks under circumstances out of his control and finally allows the devil inside him to take over.
phoenix played the joker like a man possessed by something evil.
i feel that is why his joker is the most unsettling version for me.
there's something demonic, yet very real, about this joker.

There was definitely a split personality at play to a certain extent (multiple personality disorder along with elements of schizophrenia) with Arthur. The first and most glaring example, as you mentioned, is when he is writing in his joke book. Not only does he switch hands and change his writing style, but you see this different, more confident "swag" come over him with some of the exaggerated, dance-like body movements that we see much more of later.
By the end, once the transformation is complete, Arthur is gone.

yea, the movie is almost a modern day dr. jekyll and mr. hyde.
the joker persona in this is like a twisted, corrupted version of the clown persona he used to entertain children for his job.
they really brought the horrifying aspects of the joker concept to the forefront in this.
Another interesting fact: The movie Thomas and the other rich people are watching at the theater is "Modern Times," a film about the dehumanization of the modern industrial worker, and they are laughing at it.

ah good bit of trivia there.
this film brought up some very topical themes.
how classism in society crushes the poor and disenfranchised.
the unintended consequence is it creates people like arthur fleck who lash out.
Pattinson is currently 33 years old, at the time of shooting of BvS, Affleck was 42, he was made to look older using make-up. If this movie is set in late 90's, in theory Pattinson could be seen as alternate universe counterpart of same character.
