"The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached?

I don't see the necessity for this.

Like pre-Avengers, they had no interest in doing a shared DCEU. Then Avengers makes over a billion and they rushed everything to copy that.
And this is the antithesis of being reactive followers.

As I recall Sony is doing Venom and Fox is pushing for Doom, but neither of those films exist yet. A standalone villain origin film hasn't really been done from any of the big comic brands, that in itself is a fresh take on the genre.

I don't see how a Batman movie factors into this story.

So who's going to play Batman in this? I assume we will see the acid bath in Ace Chemicals and you need the Bat for that.

I don't think they've thought about it clear enough financially. This is the worst character to try this with IMO.

The logic probably began and ended with "Joker is one of most popular characters and could make us a bunch of money. But nobody liked him in Suicide Squad so we should cast a different actor this time." "Brilliant idea!"

James Wan is already using the Aquaman characters that Snyder had cast and it has been confirmed that it takes place after Justice League. I don't think Patty Jenkins plans on abandoning the continuity from the first Wonder Woman movie.

No they won't , but that's not what I'm arguing. I'm arguing that Aquaman and WW2 will be their own stories which aren't dependent on the events of JL MOS SS and BvS for the plots of their own films. The continuity for those stories will be there but the filmmakers won't be bound together to do things which may conflict with an overall arch of other characters films, or with filmmaker X or Y.

They'll have more freedom to tell the stories they want to tell going forward. No , Jenkins isn't abandoning the WW1 , but WW2 isn't gonna be JL 2.0 either.

Aquaman and Woman Woman have freedom to be standalone films without creating this new elseworld banner.

That just seems like something that we already knew before today's news. Man of Steel, BvS, and Justice League all have narratives that lead into each other. It seems like the main plot of Wonder Woman doesn't necessarily tie into Justice League all that much other than Themyscira and the Amazons showing up again. From what was seen so far in the Justice League trailers, Suicide Squad had less references than Wonder Woman. Because there have been zero references to Suicide Squad so far in the Justice League trailers. I don't think anyone thought Aquaman or Wonder Woman 2 would be Justice League lite movies, even though The Flash movie will be.

Look, I would love nothing more than for WB to put out a shared cinematic universe as cohesive and consistent as Marvel has. I would. But Man of Steel functions as a stand-alone film, BvS was a disaster, Suicide Squad was a disaster, Wonder Woman functions as a stand-alone film, and Justice League (as far as these old eyes can tell) looks like it's going to be a disaster.

At this point, I'm more excited for the stand-alone/spinoff films like Justice League Dark and Batgirl than I am for Justice League. That's just where I'm at now. I'm so soured on the shared universe aspect of the DCEU that I frankly wouldn't care if they used Flashpoint to nix the whole thing. I mean that Justice League trailer released a few weeks ago was hot garbage. I am so ready to move past this chapter of the DCEU, it's almost too funny to be depressing. November can come and go so we can get this over with.

I'm not entitled to anything. It's a shame the DCEU hasn't shaped up the way I would have liked it to, but I'm not going to sit here and whine and demand that WB put other potentially cool ideas on hold just so they can focus on fixing this ****.

I'm a DC fan, so I'd like to see DC properties adapted. Whether it be The Flash, Batgirl, Justice League Dark, Red Son, or The Joker. If we continue to see the same sort of passion that was put behind WW, I'll happily take spinoffs and Elseworlds tales.

Ultimately, I think WB is done trying the Marvel model, and they think they're better off just going back to doing stand alone's without trying to have a massive overarching universe of connected films.

They may also want to work with types like Marty and Matt Reeves on these types of films but find it harder to get them when they can't have creative control.

They look at the success with Nolan, Burton, Donner, and Jenkins, and I think they want to return to that model because it was most successful for them critically in addition to financial success.

If anything, Aquaman and Wonder Woman are least effected by this news.

Then we don't disagree. WB is changing their paradigm from the earlier DCEU films post JL, with Joker potentially being more evidence of that.

DC is on the right path. They should not try to imitate Marvel.

They are the home of Multiverses and Elseworld.

DcTv is the multiverse to the DCEU. So why not adapt Elseworld type stories or format?

A Netflix Superman Secret Identity 4 parter would be cool.

I don't look at this as pre-Sndyer DC. The impression given is that this is for one shot elseworld stories with lower budgets. Not mainstream commercial interpretations that were Nolan and others.

In which case they should just abandon the DCEU entirely. If they want to go back to the director driven Nolan model then just announce JL is the last film in the DCEU and move forward with stand alone movies. Let Jenkins, Wan, Reeves and whoever else just do what ever they want with the characters.

I don't see how changing their paradigm by having Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2 be unrelated to Justice League. It seems like Justice League may be setting up some of the story for the Aquaman movie with Mera showing up. And for Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2 not continuing the main storyline of Justice League, the same could be said about Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman. BvS was referenced in Suicide Squad but the movie did tie up any plot threads from that movie and the majority of Wonder Woman takes place a hundred years before Man of Steel. It seemed very much obvious that Aquaman won't be exploring the New Gods and I don't think we should expect Granny Goodness to show up in Wonder Woman 2. The Joker movie takes place in a separate continuity and Aquaman and Wonder Woman are still set in the DCEU.

Hmm? Well, Martin Scorcese producing this sounds intriguing. Still, I'll wait to see of more details on the story before I get on board or anything.

everything about this sounds amazing..

No Leto
No constraints to the DCEU
Raging Bull/Taxi Driver tone
Scorcese producing

I have faith in Todd Phillips. He's such an intriguing choice for this.

Can't wait for more developments, I've been wanting a Joker film for a long time

I have no interest in learning Joker's backstory.

Most of all I hope they don't try and portray him as a sympathetic figure.

Hey everyone let's jump to immediate conclusions! Let's not wait and see if this actually happens or just contemplate the awesome possibilities of an Elseworlds universe somehow existing alongside the DCEU.

All I know is it's out of my hands. But here are some wicked adaptations that could be done-

New Frontier (I can't even)
Kingdom Come (same)
All-Star Superman (...)

What I CAN say is I'm not a huge Joker guy, never have been. But if it looks good I'm there.

Time for Burton and Keaton to make a third Batman movie set in the Burton-verse!

What if Keaton did TDKR? I mean, we really need to get away from that story but yeah.

Kingdom Come was also something that came to mind.

Will the Taxi Driver influence mean that the Joker movie will influence another John Hinckley Jr?:o

A great thing about what WB is doing is that they are letting filmmakers have their vision without having to be forced to connecting to the other films. Thereby giving them whatever layaway they want to make the best film possible. Wonder Woman, if you cut out the bookends, stands alone neatly and is an even better film when not connecting to BvS.

Not really. What happened with Suicide Squad is symbolic of that.

Seems like they can't settle on a direction to me.

Look, there are a few sacred cows in comic book lore... uncle ben stays dead... and they have bent that one a little... Thomas and martha wayne are murdered in front of bruce... krypton exploded, and no one knows the origin of the Joker...

The only way this is acceptable is if this story tells all the potential joker origin angles,
the chemist comedian forced to be the red hood
The jack napierish gangster hood from the 89 batman
The pstd war veteran from the nolan series
A random jeromeish psychopath from arkum
Maybe even a guy who could be Thomas Wayne...

All have intersecting storylines that lead them all to ace chemicals on that fateful night... and leave it open ended which one of them becomes the joker and who dies...
