Age of Ultron The Joss Whedon thread

I think a lot of people are trying to rationalize AoU sort of tanking with the RT critics by blaming the person who's had the most involvement, Whedon. I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of his previous works (his comedic, plot, and character tendencies from those can become old, stale, and a bit overused) before TA1 but I have developed a lot respect for how dedicated he's been for the past 4+ years in giving us movies that plenty will enjoy for years to come. I do feel that it is time for him to exit the series while he still has his health and his relationship with Marvel doesn't become strained to the point he'll never work with them again. I welcome the Russo Bros stepping in because they are comic nerds like Whedon and understand what makes the Marvel world tick. If they can give us another good CA film in CW, then I'll trust them wholeheartedly with IW.

After The Avengers in 2012, Whedon could pretty much pick any project he liked and had catapulted himself into someone who could have as much power in the industry as the likes of Nolan, Bay, etc.

Right now, with all the backlash going against him, i fear for his future projects, i doubt he will ever even want to play with as much money as he did with Avengers: Age of Ultron. I hope he ends up making another original property like Angel/ Buffy, Firefly, Dr. Horrible or even Dollhouse, but now he seems very tired.

Joss crammed all these characters old and new and somehow made it a all complete coherent well told story.

To Joss Whedon: Props to you good sir!!!

The fanboys swiftly turning on Whedon reminds me of the Dark Knight Returns. Remember the mutant gangs? After Batman beat the mutant leader, they changed into the 'sons of the batman' overnight. The fanboys have done the same thing, they are now the 'sons' of the Russos.

I just don't understand how Age of Ultron could be a massive disappointment the way so are trying to portray it. Will it make as much as Avengers? Probably not, But Spider-man 2 didn't exceed SM1 and Empire didn't exceed Star Wars. I doubt Disney sees the film as anything less than a rousing success. I also feel both films would be weaker without Whedon. Who knows what awfulness was in that original Zak Penn script for the first one.

Also, it almost certainly will make more than Avengers, just not domestically alone.

As for the why? I don't know, probably a combination of factors. Could be the "No jokes, ever" brigade coming out in force. Could be the hatedom Whedon has accumulated over the years seeing a chance to topple an idol. Could be DC and Fox fans deploying under false flag.

 Agreed! There was so much wonderful stuff in this film!

IMHO, Whedon kind of contradicts himself by saying how much he wanted Tom Hiddleston as Loki but didn't want the Thor cave stuff.

I am sorry but your last paragraph is a pile of ********, I am a big Joss Whedon fan, have been since Firefly, but while I enjoyed this movie I was fairly disappointed by it also. Though Marvel takes a lot of the blame for that In my eyes.

The Empire podcast interview I came away with the idea that the cave scene was Whedon's idea and Marvel wanted it cut after it didn't test well and Whedon fought that. There seems to be some confusion over who's idea that scene was, Whedon's or Marvel's.

I'm pretty sure that the interview states, the cave scenes didn't test well with audiences so Marvel wanted it completely excised from the film. So, it would have gone from him leaving the farm to him bringing Vision to life with nothing in between. Whedon fought to keep the cave scene in some form but eventually they leveraged the farm stuff against it and he conceded. He says, it was only in the edit, that the higher ups were convinced that there had to be some scene connecting Thor's departure and his return.

Did you listen to the podcast because its clear what he meant if you listen to it. He wanted the scene, Marvel didn't.

I'm actually really hoping that scene is on the blu ray. Sounded interesting at the very least.
