It's indeed a bad strategy. As embargo is lifting tonight, instead of going to RT, I will go straight to the critic blogs and websites to read the reviews. I will watch the movie on Thursday after which my interest in reading reviews will plummet so RT wouldn't even matter.

As Warner Bros own RT, I wonder what kind of role they played in this bizarre decision. I hope it was solely for the show.

Yeah, Bad Moms 2 was the first one they did this for. This will be their 3rd week with this "new policy".

They could totally and unnecessarily take themselves out of my internet browsing patterns if they decide to make this a permanent thing on the big blockbusters. Being early and having a good bank of reviews available a fair while before a film's release was my reason for going there.

Well, it already seems to be a permanent thing since they're doing it every week.

But it looks like they'll only do it for one release every week, not all of them. And they don't seem to be withholding scores for too long, so scores for movies with early embargoes will probably not be withheld at all(see Coco for example). But these are just my assumptions based on their patterns since they started it(which was earlier this month), so who knows, maybe they'll deviate from this pattern in the future.

I'm in a "Expect the worst, hope for the best" mode. I think it's safe that it's a crowd pleaser, though.

It doesn't get panned like SS or DOJ, but it fails to get great reviews.

I'm hoping you guys are right. Even though my opinion usually lines up with critic consensus, I still like to judge movies on my own. However as a personal rule, I'd rather judge a movie through redbox, rather than $15 at a theater, if it gets really low reviews. With a 45-65% RT rating, I'd actually be pretty happy with that, and would be enthusiastic about seeing it in a theater. But if JL gets really bad reviews, I might just wait to rent it.
