Shes come a long way since she played a curly haired little girl vampire in INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE, and lately Kirsten Dunsts name is synonymous with SPIDER-MANs number one squeeze, Mary Jane Watson. Being both bold and beautiful, hostage and heroic Dunst finds that each time she plays M.J. is a new experience completely different from the others. This is a role that Dunst has basically grown up in, and iF Magazine was more than a little eager to get her unique perspective behind the guy who wears the webs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
iF MAGAZINE: You seem in a good mood, why?
KIRSTEN DUNST: I am just in a good place right now. We all go through different things in our lives.
iF: Did you have training for singing?
DUNST: In MARIE ANTOINETTE I had to have training for singing, as I dont sing. Im not familiar with the French language and then to sing with French, its all so different and I learned the whole sing. I know how to sing its fine; I just needed help with the French part of it. For this I had some training too. I needed help with my breathing.
iF: What is the difference between doing SPIDER-MAN and SPIDER-MAN 3?
DUNST: I dont see a difference in our hearts and why we love doing this movie, but I do see a difference in that we all have a good place at Sony and we get treated very nicely. We are very lucky people. They give us more artistic license but they also give us more pressure, its a yin and yang and it balances itself out.
iF: Can you tell us of any perks you enjoyed on this set?
DUNST: You know what was best for me on the set of SPIDER-MAN, because Tobey had a chef to keep his weight down and I got to eat the food! I would eat gourmet steaks and Id be in Tobeys trailer and on some days that was the only thing that was going to get me through the day! I knew a steak was going to come to me.
iF: What is Mary Jane like? Is she more aggressive in this movie?
DUNST: No, shes not. Shes happy in the beginning, but shes only happy in her work. She feels the confidence from her work, which is the only problem. Then its kind of downhill from there, and by the end of this movie, its truly poetic.
iF: How much love will be in this movie?
DUNST: Love is through the whole film. Mary Jane and Peter love each other.
iF: Sam Rami is an old romantic. He started in horror movies, but hes a romantic?
DUNST: Oh so romantic! He is the sweetest, I adore Sam. We get along really well.
iF: What do you love and hate about Mary Jane?
DUNST: I cant hate any character I play, because I have to embrace their faults. What I love about her is that shes searching and shes vulnerable and shes not afraid to be with the man that she loves no matter how difficult it might be.
iF: You talked on the internet about Spider-man could die and superheroes never die.
DUNST: I was actually joking when I said that. But were talking about life right now and obviously this movie is life and fantasy, but I see no reason why that couldnt happen. I think youll have a lot of comic book fans that would be very upset.
iF: Do you enjoy returning to Mary Jane over again?
DUNST: Yeah, but its not the same role every time. Because weve changed so much as people and the fact that Ive known these people from 16 until now, Im almost 25 it has only made it more comfortable. I sat in the editing room with Sam and went through every scene of mine; I mean what director would do that?
iF: How much have you changed as a person from 16 to 25?
DUNST: Someone said to me in the other room they were quoting me from when I was 12, that you said you were against smoking and now you smoke! Naughty. She quoted me about being a people pleaser and I said youre right, I guess at 16, I was a people pleaser and now I like to please people. Its the er that makes the difference. Its not a control thing, its like let me do something for you because I want to do something for you, because I want you to love me back. I dont need to gain anything from you; I just love to do it.
iF: What goes on this time?
DUNST: Basically Mary Jane is really put through it in this film. I feel like every scene was pretty dramatic for me so I really wanted to make an effort to not be this depressed lump throughout the film. Honestly, when you see the film youll realize what Im talking about because every scene is just like beating Mary Jane down in some sort of a way.
iF: Going from Marie Antoinette to Mary Jane?
DUNST: Well I had about a year off in that time period so I was ready and refreshed for work. And you know what was interesting, Marie Antoinette, because I didnt speak much in that film, I really got to understand acting in a whole other way, a very sensorial way. So that really gave me a lot of what I should have learned in acting school, but I didnt go to acting school. But it was kind of like a new acting course for me. It was almost like making a silent film for me. So that experience helped me so much in my work in SPIDER-MAN.
iF: Who couples up in this film?
DUNST: I dont know! I get in trouble when I talk about that. Are you trying to trick me? There is a sniper across the way over there, the Sony sniper.
iF: Was this same thing as last time?
DUNST: We always take that and try to be true, but also alternate it and interpret it in our own way. If I were Mary Jane from the comics Id be walking around in lingerie saying, Hey tiger, all day.
iF: Whats the benefit for you of being in the business for so long? Do you feel tired or more secure?
DUNST: I can take a break whenever I want to take a vacation, thats the gift that I have. I make enough money that I can stop and go to art school and hang out with my friends and take them all on vacation. The fact that Ive had so much experience with work, I can help my friends because they are figuring them all out.
iF: What is your drive now?
DUNST: I look for things its really intuition for me. I ask my family and friends to read my scripts. It comes down to the director who will collaborate with me.
iF: Whos a true hero in real life?
DUNST: My mum, my dad, my brother, my girlfriends, my cats and Joni Mitchell.
iF: Do you feel that something is missing in your life?
DUNST: No, I feel I have a lot to learn, but I dont feel anything is missing.
iF: Do you feel like you have to be careful where you go?
DUNST: No, I just spent a lot of time in New York and I had a lot of freedom. Paparazzi just shot me once in two and a half weeks.
