The Lone Ranger - Part 2

If critics expected a blockbuster, as Depp claims, why would they write reviews in advance that go for the jugular (when the trailers didn't try to present the movie as anything but a blockbuster)?

Both of these guys just need to accept the fact this movie was mind numbingly terrible

and what, go around saying it's awful while they're promoting it? yeah, that sounds like a great idea, they should give Shia a call, he will show them how it's done

I haven't seen the movie yet but I don't think they are that wide of the mark saying there was an agenda against the film, you just have to look back in this thread to see articles about the production costs that already had this pegged to be the whooping boy of summer 2013 as far back as last year.

How much this actually affected people's choice not to see the movie is impossible to determine though, but it's a solid argument for Depp and co to hang their (Cowboy)hat on.

Nail on the head

I think they need to stop telling the public how much these movies cost. It isn't anyone but the shareholders' business if they make money or not.

fans need to stop to care about the budgets. they need to stop acting like they make a profit or like they lose money from those blockbusters. :)

They don't tell the public. Hollywood journalists usually find out through insider sources.

I'm still in the mindset that Depp should've played the Lone Ranger and a real Native American should've played Tonto.

It's sad to think that you'll see CG aliens or giant robots more often than a Native American actor leading a film.

They exist in Canadian cinema, but are very rare in the US for some reason. Even Jay Silverheels (the original Tonto) was Canadian.

Maybe people are just getting tried of seeing Johnny Depp paying the wacky, overly made up character. It's been getting dimishing returns for a while now. Maybe he should just try acting again, he's a good actor, but he's been an autopilot since the first Pirates of the Caribbean. I had no desire to see Lone Ranger, didn't know any behind the scenes information or budget stuff. I just saw a preview and felt I didn't need to see the Old West's Jack Sparrow, with even lamer Orlando Bloom stand in. Don't think I've watched a Johnny Depp movie since feeling cheater out of three hours of my life for the final Pirates movie.

Really good film and the best I've seen Depp in a while, his Tonto is actually nothing like Sparrow or any of his Burton's characters, more like a cross between Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man and Harold Loyd. Even if it was too long and too comedic at times it was still a very entertaining movie and will indeed probably be rediscovered later down the line.

Disney is a publicly traded company, so the answer to that is no.

fans need to stop to care about the budgets. they need to stop acting like they make a profit or like they lose money from those blockbusters.

Why? If they own stock in the company, they technically do.

Some critics are going to absolutely tear Hammer a new one in his next few movies. It's not fair but it's going to happen.

Whether or not I agree with them, I love Depp and Hammer's statements. Far too often do cast/crew get overly apologetic for their work when they don't always need to. Go down swinging. Get all piss and vinegar with your critics. I love it. :o

Talent are held accountable to critics. Critics need to be held accountable to talent as well. It's a system of checks and balances. Far too few actors and directors are willing to challenge journalists and that's a shame.

I don't care about someone bashing critics, bash away but I do think it's embarrassing that a bunch of pretty millionares are crying because the critics didn't like their 250mil art film that suspiciously looked liked another vapid, cynical summer blockbuster. Depp turned down a role because he wasn't going to get 20mil, you don't get 20mil for doing art films.

Also if they weren't expecting a hit movie then why was so much money spent on Lone Ranger. I would like to join Depp and crew in bashing critics because that's a fun thing to do but they are embarrassing themselves.

I think Hammer has just screwed himself from getting good work in the near future. Someone like Depp could get away with it.

Especially since he just pooped on Batman by saying "I don't really like superhero movies." - Those are pretty much the only movies they're making nowadays... What other roles are you aiming for?

I'm telling you... This guy is the new Taylor Kitsch. Buh-bye.

I truly hope so. I think he might have screwed himself out of ever getting cast as a superhero with some of his other recent comments.

I hope he keeps talking. :woot:

At least Kitsch earned enough good will with his role on Friday Night Lights that he might have some networks chomping at the bit to get him on a new series. Even on TV, Hammer was pretty much a nothing before his name somehow started getting thrown around for Justice League.

"The money doesn't matter 'cause this wasn't a blockbuster, but the critics gave it bad reviews, and that's why it made no money, which matters after all."

Still can't make sense of this.

Yeah, I'm missing the part where a $250 million+ budget isn't aiming to be a blockbuster?

Also, considering Depp gets $20 million of that 250... how much did Hammer get? $1 million? $2 million?

I can't stress this enough: Hollywood NEEDS to rethink how they make movies.

Hammer has been coming off as an arrogant *****ebag lately. I still think he is talented but by god is it hard to root for someone so damn full of himself.

But is pointing the finger at the critics the right thing to do? There are ways they could have defended their work without pointing the finger. They could have been proud in their work, and express disappointment that the movie wasn't a bigger box office success.

Sure, they were honest, but they come off as whiny and somewhat petty.

I still think what hurts Armie Hammer is his darn name. I know that he's from a famous family, I know that he was named after his grandfather (creator os 'Arm and Hammer). But his name is just too goofy. Imagine if Olivia Wilde went by her real last name: Cockburn. Oy vey!

Now if he was a stand-up, that would be a different story.

And all the more entertaining.
