He looks kind of like Lou Diamond Phillips in Young Guns during the Spirit Road scene.

That just had to be awkward for everybody.

He could be. He certainly looks mixed with something. All he claimed was that his great-grandmother might be Cherokee or Creek Indian. Who knows? But it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

I agree. You cannot account for Depp's particular facial structure and coloration by looking solely at European antecedents, which is also common with random people you run into in, say, Oklahoma who happen to have 1/8-1/16 Native American blood. It's absolutely true that it's a shame you almost never see Native American actors onscreen, but as a general principle, not because Depp didn't step out of his pet project to make room for somebody else.

I almost didn't notice that we're seeing Hammer in full Lone Ranger getup on that first pic.

People in Oklahoma "happen" to have 1/8-1/16 blood quantum (usually a LOT higher ratio than that) because OK is Indian Territory. That's where the gubmint shipped *every* renegade Indian back in the 1800s --- just a wide spot on the Plains that wasn't worth a damn to any self-respecting Manifest Destiny pioneer pushing west.

Twentieth century: ....what's that? They discovered a ****load of oil in Indian Territory...? WHOOPS. Too bad, Indians, we're taking back your last little sliver of land and dignity

Yeah. That's why I used it as an example. Depp being part Indian is perfectly plausible.

wow those are some huge sets... if you look next door you'll see remnants of the old New Mexico town built for Thor... Will Asgardian meet Native American? He's already met Captain American, so why not the Native American that we all know as ToTon

big sets. with CGI they will be able to make it even more big

Cherokee Sam, are you full blooded by chance?

One-eighth quantum, member of the Eastern Band. My ancestors were on the Baker Roll.

Yeah. That's why I used it as an example. Depp being part Indian is perfectly plausible.

Depp's from Kentucky, not Oklahoma; there's not a huge native population in KY. And KY was a no-man's-land for various tribes, including Cherokee and Shawnee. Again, not saying Depp's *not* of native descent, but if he *is,* he sure as hell has done nothing to try to prove his ancestry or get on the rolls of the Cherokee or Choctaw or anyone else. He only seems to show "Native Pride" whenever there's a film project and a paycheck attached. That makes him little more than a "Wannabee."

So .... if they were going for authenticity not so much. if they were going for how can we excessively accentuate Depp - Mission accomplished.

.... dark b for the win.
Looking at the painting, Depp's look might be historically accurate after all.

Sattler - "...my paintings are not intended to be viewed as historically accurate. I used the combination of face paint and headdress as an artistic expression to symbolize the subject’s essence and his affinity to the Crow.”http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/04/...s-of-tonto-makeup-from-lone-ranger-exclusive/

Maybe if they'd cast an actual Native American instead of a white guy pretending, he would have realized that.

And it's fine, this is all for make believe, but it is funny some people were claiming Depp's outrageous look had authenticity because of that painting.

200 million for this? And you continue to rob and disparage our identity... Wheres our check you crazy white man?

What's hilarious is that Sattler admits that the bird *isn't* on the head of the Indian in his portrait --- it's flying *behind* him, along with several other crows, and very much alive. And Depp thought it was a dead bird on his head.

And then Depp has to go and say some boosheet like this:

" looked at the face of this warrior and thought: That’s it," Depp told the outlet. "The stripes down the face and across the eyes … There’s this very wise quarter, a very tortured and hurt section, an angry and rageful section, and a very understanding and unique side. I saw these parts, almost like dissecting a brain, these slivers of the individual."

Johnny Depp could really, really use an actual Native American advisor on this movie --- and in his personal life --- to keep him from saying stupid things about Native Americans and further proving his complete lack of understanding of things he pretends to know about.

Better get some John Redcorn looking mother****ers as consultants, huh?

Would Johnny Depp get bird poo on his head?

Depp knew it was flying:

"It just so happened Sattler had painted a bird flying directly behind the warrior’s head. It looked to me like it was sitting on top. I thought: Tonto’s got a bird on his head. It’s his spirit guide in a way. It’s dead to others, but it’s not dead to him. It’s very much alive."

If people don't care for this project, why keep up with it?

If people don't care for this project, why keep up with it?

Because some people are *so* oppressed that they feel the need to "change things" by whining about it in an internet forum the parties they're complaining about never reads.

Way of the future, man. Way of the future.
