The Look of the Turtles

I take it , you haven't read the original comic books ? Four mutated turtles being raised by a mutant rat to avenge the death of his master against a Clan of evil ninjas led by a psycho in a bladed suit sounds pretty gritty to me.

thank you!

Agreed. A lot of these redesigns take themselves too seriously. Honestly, it is TMNT. It is supposed to be fun and silly and zany, it doesn't need a "gritty reboot", that's missing the point of both the cartoons/live action movies and the original comics.

Not to mention splinter wanted blood and shredder dead with no remorse

Shouldn't use the original comics as an example if you've never read them or even know the content for that matter

You need a hybrid of the two, which the 2003 series was.

Even the 2003 toon was surprisingly dark for a saturday morning cartoon. The banned episode " Insane in the Membrane " which focused on Baxter Stockman's constant punishment and mutilation by Hun is a good example.

Yeah, it was dark, but not like R rated dark. The characters and situations need to be gritty, but at the same time juxtaposed with that whole self aware "is this **** really happening?" vibe.

i was surprised in the TMNT 03 series by the way they were dismembering Stockman. I didn't know they could air that on a cartoon.

What I don't get about animated Baxter Stockman, was in the 87 toon, The producers made Baxter white because they felt a nerdy black scientist being bossed around was some how racist, yet in the 03 toon, he was black, but was being bossed around AND tortured. Baxter was tormented and mutilated to the point where the only thing left was a brain attached to a spinal cord with an eye ball attached to it in a jar. Kinda twisted.

I'm also wondering why having a japanese guy bossing around a black guy was racist.

Very twisted IMO. It shocked me that 4kids allowed that to happen. That and the Shredder decapitation scene were shocking and still got away with that. They need to recapture the spirit of that series

Technically it was [BLACKOUT]an Utron[/BLACKOUT]... so that's what makes it not-racist?
So for something to not be racist the black guy must be a boss or what? I sincerely don't understand that.

I often wonder what goes on in the head of some of these producers and executives.

Sadly, I don't think Nick will.

I hope that in the movies they make the foot ninja robots. If they're regular humans like in the old movies they're just gonna kick them and punch them. Thats why I prefer robots, they can slice them, stab them and so on without censorship.

Superhero cliche: No one cares if you slice up robots, but humans are a no-no. Just look at Wolverine, most of the times he uses his claws it is to slice robots or to intimidate someone, but, back to TMNT.

yeah, as much as I love that first turtles movie they might as well have given Leonardo a foam pool noodle.

Honestly, I think the fun, cartoonish versions have had their say in the cartoon series and films long enough. I am so down for a gritty live action version. I am very much in favor of option 1.

Agreed! But it should still be fun. You know what the irony is though? Eastman and Laird meant this to be a spoof, but TMNT have become like traditional superheroes! And they sold it all to Nick...

It's like they were setting themselves up for failure by doing this. By selling the rights to Nickolodeon, there's no doubt the target audience will always, in the long run, be children. Maybe they would've been better off with Disney; Disney owns Marvel and they are doing a FANTASTIC job so far (*cough* Avengers).

Even more irony is that it seems Eastman and Laird don't mind that Bay is changing the origins of the Turtles. They said the idea of a Turtle planet was exciting (not a direct quote of course, but something to that effect). Why the heck would anyone, especially creators that have made characters and a story like this so original, farce or not, be okay with someone butchering their creation like Bay is? Especially when their fanbase is so immense and loyal! I don't get it.

Because truth be told, they didn't take their creation all that seriously.

I definitely want them to look more like turtles, because the last few incarnations look like frogs with shells.

A version of the slider turtle would look awesome. They have amazing detail and it would give the turtles a very unique tribal look. It would also make a lot of sense that they would look like the because they are the most common turtle kept as pets.

A version of the sea turtle would also be great because of the scales and their menacing face structure. You cannot convince me that this turtle doesn't look like Raph.

As long as they are the same species and are GREEN, I'll be satisfied with either of these.

I don't really want the turtles to look too turtle-like.

But, incorporating some turtle-aspects would be alright. Like giving them colored ears like red-eared sliders. That could be a cool look.

I also like the idea of the turtles being noticeably different sizes. Like a foot between the shortest and tallest.
