I haven't given Birds of Prey a 2nd viewing. Was that pre or during Covid? I can't remember. I just haven't rewatched it since I saw it in theaters.

I just…dont want grotesque, scary Joker anymore. I feel like we’ve worn that thin. I’d love to see a more traditional, bright purple suit wearing, cackling, dark humor clown prince of crime Joker on film again, like Nicholson’s.

Birds of Prey sits high on my favourite CBMs, personally. Some of the character deviations are... A Choice. Cass in particular. A choice I don't think works as an adaptation of that character, but does work for the movie. Should have just gone with a different character name, but I'll go with it. It's a delightful time start to finish in my book, gorgeous to look at, with Robbie's best turn as Harley and one of the best villains the genre has to offer.

Hot take but Ewan was probably the best villain the DCEU had.

I recall birds of prey being a fine movie… but not having Barbara in it was strike one for me. It also felt like another classic case of filmmaker is embarrassed by the source material

I just wish it felt a little more comic book-y

Birds of Prey going for an extremely gay, hyper colourful roller derby aesthetic was part of the fun for me. Didn't feel like embarrassment given what Yan replaced the comic aesthetics with was equally silly in a different way. Got its flaws but overall it's a delightful hangout movie with way more charm than... maybe any other DCEU movie, even if one or two are probably better films?

Birds of Pray was OK. Never really got the hate besides some of the changes from the source material and the usual misogyny crowd harping on about female led franchise stuff.

Yeah, I never got the vibe it was embarrassed of anything. I'm sure there was some squabbling over who could and couldn't be included, but what there is as bold and colorful as a comic book movie gets.

I personally love it. It's fun. And not in the Agatha way. It's genuinely fun small personal tale, even while dealing with some theoretically heavy themes. It definitely had some issues in the editing room, but what is there is just a really good time, even as I don't like what they did with Montoya. Ewan is next level magnificent, and it's Robbie's best turn as Harley imo.

I’m glad they went that direction, made it a ton more entertaining than it otherwise would have been. I liked the film a lot, but there are a bunch of areas it could have done with boosting up to make it a fair bit better. I’ll rewatch this when I get a chance for sure. As mentioned above, Ewan was a delight too. :D

I’d like that for variety’s sake, similar to why I keep carping on about wanting the DCU Batman to go fantastical and comic booky after Nolan’s and Reeve’s versions.

I think the type of Joker should be dictated by the type of Batman.

Another important thing about BoP was the sandwich. I kept making it at least once a week for months. Delicious!! Might have to cook that tomorrow :hmr:
That was a masterstroke. Also reminds me that it was the film that we finally got Margot Harley in all her greatness - after being a bit disappointed about something that sounded so good on paper in Suicide Squad.

I love that Joker opens today and I killed time at work this afternoon reading roughly seven pages of posts talking about pickle juice (ah the joke writes itself) and anchovies/pineapple on pizza :D

You folks are awesome and I love you all! Please don't ever change :oldrazz:

Sir Drizz of @Drizzle has been identified as being directly responsible for originating this incident. This level of legendary conversation to celebrate CBM launches on a superhero film forum within a general superhero film thread is why he was knighted earlier this year and given his Hype lifetime achievement award. All future Hype events of significance will now feature wild banquets in his honour and the downing of pickle juice during the key speeches before gorging on 48 inch pineapple-anchovies pizzas with no hands/cutlery.

Seeing it in a couple of hours but I thought this was funny.

Haha :D

To be fair I never saw this as a big franchise. The sequel may be terrible but I didn’t see mega bucks for a trilogy or so of Joker films even if they had all been very good. The first felt more like a hard to repeat flash-in-the-pan type situation to me.

Slow Horses is great, so this is a solid pick!
Lanterns has had a run of solid news. I wanted it to be good but my hopes weren’t too high early on. Right now I’m going to be disappointed if it’s not great and doesn’t deliver on what I’ve wanted from a GLC project all these years. Just hope it survives for multiple seasons so we get to see a whole bunch of the best Lanterns at work.
