The Naked Fun in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

I maintain that of the original Netflix seasons Daredevil Season 1 was easily their weakest because it felt like an origin movie unnecessarily stretched out to 13 episodes. Except the main character didn’t even get his costume until the last 1/13th of that movie so the pacing was just…off. But the problem wasnt the 13 episodes length, because while the Hand portion of S2 wasn’t great, both that season and S3 were leagues better because they actually felt designed for the format of TV. I think the problem with seasons even shorter than 13 is that the temptation for writers to think of it more like a movie is stronger. That approach just never works well imo.

The issue with Iron Fist was the writing and the general rushed nature of the show. Not being 13 episodes.

One thing I've learned over the last decade of streaming is TV shows need to be TV shows. There is no such thing as "fat" on television. Just bad writing. We are talking about tales that are mostly about everything but the main plot. The only good episode of Born Again was an episode so devoid of the main plot it's genuinely funny.

Too much of TV has become miniseries and while those can be great, that shouldn't be the norm for television.
Yeah, I've gotten quite bored with the "shows that feel like a movie chopped into 6-8 parts" model. The MCU and Star Wars shows are most guilty of this, even though I've enjoyed quite a few of them.

Funny enough, Andor is something I consider to be in its own lane in that regard. It's so cinematic in scope that I like to pretend each season is made up of four movies, especially with how season 2 has been structured.

S1's biggest strength is that it has two strong origin stories going for it. But yeah, totally agree it's the weakest. The Hand subplot goes off the rails do to not so subtle racism, but so much of s2 is fantastic. The first 5 episodes are pretty perfect and the next four are really strong.

This TV conversation got me to do some reflecting.

As far as serialized TV being done right and meaningful stories being told, my sci-fi TV Mt Rushmore is still this:

Buffy

The X-Files

Power Rangers (for reasons known to me, I said what I said)

And Xena

Just peak TV all around.

Really pisses me off that Xena isn't heralded more when it truly laid the blueprint for many shows/movies and it also had a ton of underrated acting performances from Lucy Lawless and the cast. It gave a lot of your favorite actors and creatives from LOTR to The Boys their start too.

But I digress. Thanks for coming to my impromptu Saturday TedTalk.

Yeah, a lot of New Zealand actors were on Xena/Hercules.
Xena awoken many lesbians in the 90's don't undercut them!

Watched Black Widow again for the first time in a a while to prepare for Thunderbolts. BW holds up surprisingly well, I think it helps I haven't seen IW and EG in a while also, so BW isn't out of order in my watching, and that helps the movie.

The finale is still unnecessarily CGI and super hero, but the rest of the movie is pretty damn good and pretty touching in some parts. Of course, it also gave us Yelena.

I think this announcement is incorrect. It seems to be based on Zaslav's recent comment that shooting is"wrapping," but he never actually said it was complete. The film may still be shooting for all we know, but close to the end.

I don’t know a lick about Supergirl outside of Supes TAS, but I’m really ready for it.
My favorite female DC hero, and they are literally adapting her best story of all-time. Hyped!

People who only know her from STAS or the CW show might be in for a shock when it comes to her characterization. :hehe:

That graphic novel is incredible so hopefully they stay as faithful as possible.

I'm mostly interested in how Hardy shoots it though. He shot Annihilation, Ex Machina, Civil War, Devs AND Fallout so that is super exciting.

Daredevil Season 3

Wow.

What a riveting season of television...

This was less a superhero show than an intense psychological drama with vigilante elements sprinkled in. The series almost seemed to forget about Daredevil for large portions of its runtime, and I was totally fine with that. Karen, Nadeem, Fisk, and Dex are such fascinating characters, it was a pleasure to watch entire episodes dedicated to exploring their respective fractured psyches...

Born Again has some mighty big shoes to fill. I don't expect the reboot to approach this level of quality (how could it?), but several folks here have assured me that Born Again is completely enjoyable in its own right, as long as I go into it with an open mind and as few preconceptions as possible.

Fingers crossed :daredevil

Next up: Jessica Jones Season 2

DD season 3 is one of my favorite seasons of television, period. A masterpiece. Every single episode is used economically to build to an incredible crescendo.
