The Negative Outlook thread

After everything I've seen, I really don't like Chatwin :(

Chatwin is definitely what kills it for me. the moment i heard he was cast i automatically knew that the people in charge didn't "get" Dragon Ball.

I like most, would have preferred an Asian Goku, but the fact that he's not doesn't upset me, what does upset me, is that Chatwin just seems bad :(. I'm sure there were/are a dozen more qualified white Actors who could have portrayed Goku. I mean it's not even like Chatwin is a bankable name.

Now, no disrespect to Chatwin, I'm sure there other roles that he's very suited to, just from what I've seen, Goku isn't one of them.

Yeah I really wonder who went to these casting calls if Chatwin was the best one there?

my theory is that they saw the results of Transformers and thought they could duplicate that same result with DB, except with less talent. Transformers took the idea and molded it into a Spider-Man type beginning and it worked to bring it everyone from all ages....so they figured they'll take DB put a Spider-Man type spin on the beginning, find someone who fits the repressed teen in school and also looks the most like Goku. Chatwin happened to fit that bill and has starred in a Spielberg flick. don't worry about talent or charisma or preparation, just get someone who fits the mold.

hurm.must remember to investigate further

That Spielberg flick sucked, though. I can't get through WotW w/o falling asleep.

i am not defending this movie . you know it.

but i know from other movies and stories that a director, studio and editing can bring the worst acting out of their actors.

i dare to say that it is a fact that Chatwin is a good enough actor for a summer dragonball movie. the problem is the script, director and of course FOX.i actually wouldnt be suprised if the actors couldnt do more takes. i guess they used the second take :)

and lets be honest. who could make this work:
-i am goku
-i am oozaru
-to be one with myself i need to beat you

-dragonnnnnnnnn.

noone noticed how goofy Chatwin was sometimes promoting DB? that kind of faces would look good IMO in a DB movie.

Add in epic music, have Goku scream the last word of each part while the scene rumbles and his aura manifests itself more and more powerful.. Now you're DB'ing like they do in the games. :word:

And see, that's exactly what I've been pointing out. Chatwin pretty much has the personality, if not a great understanding, of the personality of Goku. Why he's somehow acting so tense and odd in the movie strikes me as incredibly strange. I think it's possible that he just didn't like what he was being given and that if given more freedom to be himself rather than the script's version of Goku, would have been a better act.

he acted how the director told him to act. the director made a movie how FOX wanted.

The only character thats even close to getting right is Yamcha. But he barely has a point in the film other than to get them out of a hole they dont need help getting out of. Such a waste...

This is not Goku. Early in the film hes complaining about the way his grandpa is training him like the damn karate kid. Then proceeds to ask him to train him how to get the girl. WAT? Even when Goku was married to Chi Chi she was second to his love for fighting and training. It's her who wanted him, he could have cared less as long as he could train to become stronger. No matter what kind of training, never once complained like he does in this film.

I'm tired of seeing the everyday average guy hero these studios think they need to put in the movie for the audience to relate too. I'd so much rather see a pure at heart good natured strong willed never give up kinda hero that we dont see often, I think many would agree we dont need to see ourselves as the hero, not only that, it's almost insulting... It's like insinuating we're all indecisive wimps not ready or prepared to handle what life may throw us.

...God I hate this movie.

Is it me or did Fox rip off Spider-Man yet again?
Seriously, this... thing lacked the heart or soul of Dragon Ball...
I wanted to like it, but everything that FOX made with it made me hate it.
"Grandpa tell me how to get the girl" was the straw that broke tyhe camel's back... Now The spawn of the guy who brought us Achy Breaky Heart has mopped the floor with Earth's mightiest warrior... On the lighter side Uwe Boll must be laughing somewhere...
