The problem is, there are lines somewhere. I think posting naughty photos may cross that line. On the other hand, a child is not going to know what "cunning linguist" means and if he races to a dictionary he's only going to assume that Mr. Bond is good with words.

If, on the other hand, said child DOES know what is implied by "cunning linguist," it will not be Mr. Bond's fault. So I view that particular joke as completely harmless. I always got a chuckle out of it, anyway.
I knew what it meant from the start. I always just found it hilarious. And besides, there's not many posters on here that I know of that are younger than me, so I didn't think it would be harmful.

I think we can still make innuendo, but not stuff like -- The Aristocrats!

That actually sounds pretty cool.

It is. The book is really about Viv, but Fleming makes her very real. He actually writes women very well. The movies don't do his female characters justice. Ever. Well, except "Casino Royale." Vesper was played perfectly.
Yeah, out of no where he got all fussy about it. It was time for a new one anyway though.

Here's my take on it. As a 30 year old man I tend to suffer attacks of fogeyism as well. I think it happens like this. An adult enjoys a good innuendo as much as anyone else. But adults, as our friend Angie pointed out last night, tend to know where to draw a line. And younger people do not always do that. Younger people - as C. Lee said earlier - often mistake being dirty for being grown-up, and that is not, strictly speaking, the case. Some consideration should be shown towards women's feelings, and towards the potential eyes of children in this place.

With that said, though, we have a right to think what we think and to make certain implications so long as we do not cross the line of what is laid out in the rules. Explicit sexual imagery or descriptions are obviously out of the question. But I honestly don't see any problem with "cunning linguist." At all.

My suspicion is that the recent behavior (especially towards the end of the OG Lounge) was in such quantity and brazen nature that C. Lee simply could not ignore it any longer. It was getting creepy in that way that community-type threads often can, and I suspect our esteemed global mod was simply creeped out by it - as, I can't lie, I was in certain instances.

I think the problem now is figuring out where the lines are drawn. We have obviously entered into an area of the rule book that is not specific, and as a mod C. Lee is bound to enforce the rules but is given some levity where interpreting said rules is concerned. It would be a lie to say that moods and such do not affect a mod's judgment in those circumstances. Having modded TF.N some time back, I know damned well that they do, and I am generally sympathetic toward mods as a result.

But I also will politely call them on it if I think they're being unreasonable.

So again, my belief here is that KOLLUS and certain others pushed C. Lee in the OG Lounge, and pushed him too far, and what it's done is made him revise his position on certain behavior (such as innuendo) where it could be considered okay under normal circumstances, he now feels that if he gives an inch it will turn into a high-school boy's locker room in here again. And as Yoda would observe, need that we do not.

Which tells me that if we want things to get normal again we need to show Mr. Lee some respect and maturity. I'm pretty sure that's all he wants to see.

TEOL!!!!!!

Only tacos I can get around here are Taco Bell. Which is bad no matter what you take the word taco to mean...

Agreed.

Well said..

HAHAHAHA.

TV, rum and Mountain Dew, and maybe some light comic reading.

 to the British losing.

Well I never said that you didn't know what it meant.

I simply meant that you have to know the other word in order for the joke to mean anything at all. If you don't know the other word then "cunning linguist" has no meaning beyond "someone who is clever with language."

Well I never said that you didn't know what it meant.
I know, I was just saying. Because you were talking about if a kid knew it or not, and I just wanted to say that I knew what it was and it was nobodies fault but mine.

How fortunate we haven't had that incident as far as I know. :o

There was nothing explicit but there were things that definitely pushed the boundaries, and it got crazy enough that I'm sure C. Lee felt he had a responsibility to put a stop to it. He asked politely for people to tone it down or knock it off. He only went as far as closing the thread when his requests had been ignored or laughed off. Regardless of what anyone tells you, sometimes you have to throw a punch. C. Lee did just that. In a sense the behavior over there could be seen as intentionally provoking him. That may not have been the intent, but from his end of it that's almost definitely how it had to look. So if the lines weren't crossed, they were definitely cheated a bit.

Agreed. The only other explanation is some prude complains about it, detesting it as a crude and degrading. But whatev, it's their board.

Well, as a bottom line that's true enough.

I know, I was just saying. Because you were talking about if a kid knew it or not, and I just wanted to say that I knew what it was and it was nobodies fault but mine.
We were blaming you anyway. If there was to be a sacrificial goat...

it would have been you.

Yes, but what I'm saying is, there is absolutely NO WAY that the words "cunning linguist", on their own, could POSSIBLY corrupt anyone.

LOL!!!

You know... since you're an Irishman... I have to ask, why the hell is your country's airline called Aer Lingus? I mean... Lingus? Really? :ninja:

Oh, alright then.

Well, enough of this serious business.

How 'bout this "Batman" character they're babbling about?

I actually don't know. I have never pondered that.

I'll be back in a jiffy.

Sounds like a game one plays in an airplane bathroom. Or... waaaaaaait, what do you people DO to airplanes, over there? :D

The name, Aer Lingus is an anglicisation of the Irish form Aer Loingeas which means Air Fleet.
There ya go. No bloody imagination. We call our national air fleet - Air Fleet. There was a toothpaste out a while ago called 'Fiacla'. An Irish word. Which means 'teeth.'
For f**** sake.

WTF was Bush thinking commuting Libby's sentence? He just doesn't care anymore does he?

LOL!!! Well here's an odd one for you. When I went to Ireland (this was 13 years ago) I bought a ticket for Aer Lingus, but I got stuck riding a Russian plane - yes, Aeroflot, of all the bloody things - and that was rather horrific. Meanwhile there were these lovely green airplanes with Aer Lingus painted on the side in large friendly letters taking off. They were probably drinking Bailey's and listening to Tommy Makem.

Me, I'm drinking suspicious-looking lemonade and wiping my face with a paper napkin that has a sickle and hammer embossed on it, and when we come in for a landing at Shannon the whole plane is shaking like they put us on tumble dry. The windows fogged up.

Anyway, the toothpaste thing is hilarious but I have to say, I love the sound of Gaelic words. Oro se do beatha bhaile and all that. Of course my name is Sean... yeah, and when I was a kid, an awful lot of Americans had no clue how to pronounce that. :cmad:

WTF was Bush thinking commuting Libby's sentence? He just doesn't care anymore does he?

Honestly? Nobody over here cares about that Scooter Libby crap except for journalists and politicians jockying for an election. Most people over here couldn't even tell you what the guy did.

Hell, I'm not even sure *I* know what he did.

Pshhh, I don't believe you. Why would they play music on that channel? That's just silly.

Well, see... it was like a radio station, but with visuals.

Now it's... now it's like Fox, if Fox was held to a lower standard of broadcasting.

:ninja:

But seriously. MTV is like the worst channel on TV nowadays.

I love VH1 though.
