The New Ghostbusters - Part 10

20M short from budget. Nice.
The cut for the studio is roughly half of total gross (the other half goes to theaters)

Sony could probably work out a revenue share with the actors/Feig for them to get money after it hits certain milestones financially and revenue streams.

It will still probably come down to if they think they can get more out of it in terms of growth domestically and overseas.
They probably already get that, if Sony relinquishes more in order to cut the budget, I don't think there is much left for the studio, with the current money draw.

It isnt. I know how much money movie needs to make to be profitable. It was sarcastic response to the future bomb, if it isnt already.

20 million from production budget. There's still the 100 million+ marketing budget that hasn't been covered, and there's still the distribution fees they need to cover.

Paul Feig wasn't lying when he said they need 500 million to be a success, because the total budget was likely in the realm of 450 million.

They are nowhere close to breaking even. This movie was a complete financial bomb. But that's what happens when you go out of you're way to alienate the primary audience for the franchise you're attempting to bank on.

Edit: Saw the sarcasm post.

It's not uncommon for Tuesdays to have an uptick from Mondays. AMC tends to do special pricing on Tuesdays, so I wouldn't be surprised if others do also to increase turnout. It's still down from last Tuesday.

I never pay much attention to BO, but is it now safe to conclude that this movie has failed?

I might have seen it out of morbid curiosity except I heard this cliched line is in it.

"Say Hello to my little friend."

Is it a big tuesday for other movies as well or just that GB did really well for the day?
Based on how GB was doing. I was projecting 2.5M. This is almost as good as The Heat, way better than Spy

BoxOfficeMojo forecast:

8-Ghostbusters (3,052 theaters) - $10.3 M (51% drop)

Should be hitting $100M by saturday (maybe today)

I know they said that no matter what happened, they want to go ahead with a sequel, but the way this movie is underperforming I don't see how a sequel idea might be cancelled. I know a few liked it,but I think the majority of people didn't want this film in the first place.

The only reason to go is because Sony is desperate for franchises. And it's really sad if you look at their latest releases: Ghostbusters is bombing, but at the same time, if it ends around $130M, there is only 12 movies in the last 5 years that did better domestically for Sony.

Skyfall ($304,360,277) - 11/9/12
The Amazing Spider-Man ($262,030,663) - 7/3/12
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($202,853,933) - 5/2/14
Spectre ($200,074,609) - 11/6/15
22 Jump Street ($191,719,337) - 6/13/14
MIB 3 ($179,020,854) - 5/25/12
Hotel Transylvania 2 ($169,700,110) - 9/25/15
American Hustle ($150,117,807) - 12/13/13
Hotel Transylvania ($148,313,048) - 9/28/12
The Smurfs ($142,614,158) - 7/29/11
21 Jump Street ($138,447,667) - 3/16/12
Grown Ups 2 ($133,668,525) - 7/12/13

Sony would be ****ed without Bond.

The claim that they would commission a sequel to a movie regardless of audiences' reception to it is pure hubris.

The funny thing about that is people still buy when studios say that. No studio comes out and says there movie was a bomb or disappointed. They always say theyre going to move forward and people still buy it

I seem to remember Fantastic Four was getting a sequel despite it flopping and then was taken off the schedule unceremoniously. Sony really can't be spinning **** at this point.

If you ask Kinberg, it still getting a sequel. It's always like that, when the movie opens, it's all buzz to encourage audiences, and then, is trying to sell the idea to movie executives. Until a filming date or a tentative title or something more concrete is announced, it's all smoke.

I doubt the studio went into this thinking, "I hope our movie called Ghostbusters makes less than Bridesmaids".

I don't want to get too far into the feminism/sexism debate that has swirled around social media in relation to this movie. I don't think either side has covered itself in glory. But purely as a business decision, the characterization of this movie as one that would appeal principally to one gender and, more damagingly, to allow the notion that this was intentional to take hold, was very risky. I would imagine that Ghostbusters would have been a goose that, treated with care, laid no limit of golden eggs.

Finally got around to this one. Falls into the "mostly harmless" category for me. Loved Kate McKinnon and Hemsworth was pleasantly goofy. Everyone else...meh. The plot, such as it was, was dumb. Overall it just felt way too safe. 2/4 stars.

As a "business decision" it was an absolute head scratcher. The trolling was strong with this one imo.

I still think they should've done like Star Wars Force Awakens and made it a continuation of the first two movies continuity (just have these women buy the Ghostbusters name from the original guys, and use their characters like Han, Chewy and Leia -and Luke to a certain extent - were used in Force Awakens, to pass the torch to the new characters).

Doing a reboot where these new characters are the first ones to see and bust ghosts doesn't really work. You can't capitalize on nostalgia just with the concept, you need the original characters. And you can't make a new Ghostbusters movie and create a world where its a new concept, because the audience already knows there were two Ghostbusters movies and its not a new concept.

So they basically created a remake - with a done to death origin story - with no real nostalgia value. Its not surprising the movie is doing lukewarm business.
