The New Ghostbusters - Part 10

Of course they should have. This is still the lowest grossing of the franchise even unadjusted. Ghostbusters should be making way more then this in 2016, but the marketing and wom just wasn't there.

I think even copying the original a bit more would have been a better choice. Gozer, terror dogs, Zuul etc were far more interesting villains then what we got. The sense of horror and danger was far more well done in the original. That's really what this film was missing. The whole third act was just zany goofball nonsense in the realm of the Scooby Doo movies. It was just cringe worthy.

I don't want to get too far into the feminism/sexism debate that has swirled around social media in relation to this movie. I don't think either side has covered itself in glory. But purely as a business decision, the characterization of this movie as one that would appeal principally to one gender and, more damagingly, to allow the notion that this was intentional to take hold, was very risky. I would imagine that Ghostbusters would have been a goose that, treated with care, laid no limit of golden eggs.

That's a big reason I think this movie isn't doing well. It unfairly got way too politicized.
It became a representation of what is wrong with jounralism, women's role in Hollywood, sexism, online harassment, fake activism, racism, hypocrisy, journalistic integrity, movie reviewing. And this movie didn't deserve that at all.

Hell, look at this thread. When people are acting like children hurling insults and trying to act smarter then the next person this place is practically dead.

When the main dialogue of the movie is 1) If you support this movie, you're one of teh SJWs" or "If you don't support this you're sexist" then thats just going to turn people off to the whole movie. I know thats what happened to me and I see that reflected in what I heard people in real life say

...also the marketing sucked so there was that

I think the fact that GB3 was in development hell for over 15 years didn't help either. Fans were frustrated with everything that went on over that time, especially with Murray's reluctance.

Then in 2009, we ended up getting a video game(never played it) in which they said was essentially the third movie. A short while after that, a new movie was supposed to come out with the old ghostbusters training a new generation. Murray was still not pleased with the script. Hell, I've been on this site for 10 years and I swear this movie was supposed to be made at least 3-5 times.

I think this film could have done much better if it had been sort of a sequel to the first 2 films.

the game is good it does feel like/play like a 3rd movie and the fact that it was written by Dan and Harold and had all the main guys doing the voices (heck even Walter Peck was back in it).

I think the other problem is they needed a 'Bill Murray' to anchor the marketing around. There's a reason why you get Will Smith, Tom Cruise, or George Clooney types. They will work that promotional dance to get you money.

One of the GBs probably should have been a newer comedic face as well. This group is great for the older SNL crowd, but the Bridesmaid cast had visibility across more shows of different ages.

I think it will play better on tv/dvd,too and get more eyeballs though.

the video game was fantastic! really good story. while it lasted, the online was REALLY fun too!

Too bad.........Sony should have went with an Extreme GB style film. Something that could have kept the spirit of the original film/characters while focusing on a new team to carry the torch and move the franchise forward. Either newly created characters or the great cast they had from Extreme GB which had some cool diversity. What a wasted opportunity and time.

They even could have had a return of the Gozer/Zuul story or a major connection to it. They could have seriously Jurassic World this thing.

I'm guessing they are now regretting doing the whole women rule, men drool approach. That works out alright when your budget is $20 million...

Suicide Squad looks to be the only breakout film this summer so they might try and hide behind that to make a sequel.

I don't think the MRA would come out again.

I was out at Walmart and saw the GB toys (no clearance bin) and I know toys are doing the buy a toy and build a toy marketing scheme but both Era of GB were missing one figure to complete. McKinnon and Murray were no where but the other ones had multiple figures. So lame.

Suicide Squad could easily be another BvS, just on smaller scale. Big opening, but with big drops. It depends on critics reviews and audience response for decent legs. DCEU really long time didnt have a full time hit in cinema. Both critics and box office wise. Their movies always end up mixed.

Yeah, but in comparison to the rest of the summer it would still be #1 non-animated. That how bad this summer is going.

That goes for most big films really, a big opening week is good, but the audience response to a film can either buy a film legs at the box office, or cut the films legs out from under it.

I still think they should've done like Star Wars Force Awakens and made it a continuation of the first two movies continuity (just have these women buy the Ghostbusters name from the original guys, and use their characters like Han, Chewy and Leia -and Luke to a certain extent - were used in Force Awakens, to pass the torch to the new characters).

Doing a reboot where these new characters are the first ones to see and bust ghosts doesn't really work. You can't capitalize on nostalgia just with the concept, you need the original characters. And you can't make a new Ghostbusters movie and create a world where its a new concept, because the audience already knows there were two Ghostbusters movies and its not a new concept.

So they basically created a remake - with a done to death origin story - with no real nostalgia value. Its not surprising the movie is doing lukewarm business.

Quoted because I agree with every single thing that you said.

I thought they should have made it a continuation as well and that it was going to be, originally. I still enjoyed the movie and thought it was fun. Yeah...the 3rd act was a little weak, but it was still fun. At least I thought so. My expectations were also really low going in though.

Big drop on 3rd weekend, but the real surprise is the overseas box office... only $50M. Wow.

After ghostbusters the video game i remember murray seemed quite excited about the franchise again saying he caught himself singing the theme song walking down the street but i think as time went on he lost interest again.

I remember there were reports he didn't read any ghostbusters 3 scripts and just shredded them ect ect.

I get the impression murray was really disappointed with ghostbusters 2.

I thought they should have made it a continuation as well

They really should have but the director didn't want it to be.

I do wonder if it had been and then they asked murray to cameo as peter the would he? because he was pretty onboard with the idea of an all women team

Sony would be ****ed without Bond.

The claim that they would commission a sequel to a movie regardless of audiences' reception to it is pure hubris.

Not really, depends how much they want a franchise and whether they can think of a way to gimmick this movie enough to up the box office.

Yes really. I repeat: the claim that they would commission a sequel to a movie regardless of audiences' reception to it is pure hubris.

The "they want a franchise" argument has been shot down multiple times.

It has not been shot down as far as I'm concerned. I've been in those types of meeting with studio executives, and they will consider that a factor. It isn't an outright failure when you look at how poorly non-animated films are doing this summer. If they stand to break even after all revenue streams are counted, they may be willing to gamble with a smaller budget or a spin off.

There was a "Ghost Corps" company tag at the beginning of this. There is no question that Sony want to milk this baby dry.

Having seen the film today however, I hope they let it die for a good long while. I just watched it bleed out for 2 hours.

They sure want to milk the franchise, but a direct sequel is probably the worst way to go. I feel the brand has been damaged actually after this installment, I don't think many people are looking forward to a new adventure from this team.

I get the impression murray was really disappointed with ghostbusters 2.

Everyone was if we're being honest.

The actors, the fans, the director...

Apparently the whole freedom and feel good atmosphere of making the first was completely gone on the second movie with the studio demanding things, and the SFX guys wanting to show off some skills.
