The New Ghostbusters - Part 5

But then it would be called "The Ghostbusters rip off (with women depending on who's criticizing)" anyway at this stage. You really can't win here. In an era where brand recognition is king, this was the only way to go.

I understand the argument. I just haven't seen a lot of examples of it actually working in practice. We've seen it fail again and again. Red Dawn, Total Recall, Point Break, Robocop, Terminator Genisys, Fantastic Four, The Lone Ranger, etc. Brand recognition did absolutely nothing to help those films.

EDIT: It carries over to TV too. Minority Report was arguably the biggest flop of the year.

EDIT: Even Mad Max: Fury Road, which was one of the best movies of the year, didn't do as well at the box office that it should have given its quality.

the world changes, this film is Ghostbusters as much as the others

you want to be on the wrong side of history, that's entirely your prerogative

Honestly, my issue here is that this is a full on, erase the originals from existence reboot. I don't want that.

The cast on the other hand? I love it. Sure it's a gimmick, but they can rock it easily.

Completely agree

There are countless remakes and sequels to successful films that end up all but forgotten after a few years while the originals remain ingrained in popular culture. It is way too early to say that this film will meet the same fate since it hasn't even been released yet, but it very well could. It takes more than a name or title to become relevant.

Success or not, this is the new Ghostbusters, whether we like it or not. We had the old one and now have the new version. Its not the first or last franchise to do this. Whats done is done. There is nothing we can do about it. Life goes on.

That's the same exact reaction the Evil Dead naysayers would have. And look what happened. Movie made money based on name but it's not what fans were asking for and now we get 5 hours of Ash and Evil Dead a year. Audiences and fans will decide this franchises fate, and if this isn't what people want and they go too far off the original then it's gone.

It's way too early to say people are stuck with this or to say it's ****. Extremist opinions are too heavy on this flick one way or the other.

Agreed. Wait, some people hated the Evil Dead remake? That was one of the best horror remakes in YEARS! WTF are people complaining about?

It's hit and miss like anything and the difference between the successful ones is that all of those movies you listed ****ing SUCKED HARD (with the exception of Mad Max, though that was an unconventional R rated film, but I still see your point). If this film is good then it'll do well. It's not gonna break many records but I think this is gonna do better than expected. Could be a sleeper hit for all we know.

Just wondering why we haven't had a teaser trailer - or seen any footage?

Wondering if i's due to a smaller scale movie, compared to Batman V Superman that had a trailer out a year before release? Maybe less post production?

I assume they're still working on FX. They also know it will be one of the most scrutinized ever so they are crossing their T's and dotting their I's.

I'm guessing we get a teaser at the Super Bowl.

Unless they have one heck of a 30 sec spot that they are confident will win people over the Superbowl is a waste of money for Sony. With the good selection of mainstream comedy films being released on Feb 12th I think that's their best time and audience to attach the first look.

If they don't release then I'll be very surprised.

Yeah these comedies don't usually have their trailers coming out 9 months in advance like some of the bigger blockbusters. Spy's first trailer came out in January, while the movie came out in June. This movie comes out in July, so it would make sense for the first trailer to hit sometime next month.

I think Zoolander is the only comedy or film in same kind of genre that has had early marketing...

Okay, here's ALLEGEDLY what is currently going on with this production:

The link above is just one person, there have been multiple threads on other sites saying the same thing.

Long story short: the studio had a screening and they aren't happy. It's not funny nor scary, they gave Paul Feig total creative control and he wanted to make a horror film with some laughs. He's an R-rated comedy type of guy and this was experimental for him, the studio execs have no idea on how to market this film right now.

Oh damn. When the movie comes out, the ****storm's gonna be amazing. I remember an interview where Feig pretty much said that he didn't know what to do but essentially do what he's familiar with. Well I guess it'll show. Unlike Josh Trank, I do see Paul Feig bouncing back from this.

Not surprised by this. I think it'll be a colossal bomb. And not for sexist reasons, but because the Feig/McCarthy/Wiig brand is awful.

Before Fantastic Four 2015, I would've written this off. But EVERY SINGLE DETAIL of that production's problems leaked online via sketchy forums; months before we even saw an official image, let alone a teaser. And there ended up being even more problems revealed after the movie released.

So I would not be surprised if this were true. So far, everything else of this production has been very similar to FF. Right down to a trailer being held off considerably later than expected.

This right here is by far the most alarming thing I've heard about this project so far. Ghostbusters is not a horror movie. It shouldn't be anything close to being a horror movie. It is a COMEDY. If this is true, they have completely missed the mark about what this franchise is even supposed to be.

I remember Feig saying he wanted the movie to be scary but I figured in the same way Evil Dead 2 is scary.

I have a sneaking suspicion there's going to be a found footage aspect to this. Like one of the girls takes a camera with them to capture video.

I could've sworn that one plot description that leaked had this exact thing in one segment.
