The New Ghostbusters - Part 6

That trailer was... okay. Geez, you'd think with so much to prove they would make a better trailer. A lot of it was pretty flatly cut. Interesting how they took the JW route with the original theme playing by piano. :funny: A lot of those jokes were flat, the cinematography looks pretty digital standard, and the only good thing about that trailer was Kate McKinnon.

And God that last joke just sucked. All these women are funny normally but hopefully they're strengths aren't misused.

I'm just confused now. Is this a sequel or a reboot? I'm fine either way, but I thought it was a reboot. Are they trying to make it look like a sequel?

God, this movie needs to succeed. This movie is four months away and it's not a great first impression.

So McKinnon is the Venkman of the group?

McKinnon is the highlight of the trailer for me I like her in this I am so down for this film bring it on haters gonna hate!

just curious who would you have cast?

Ive thought about it but don't know exactly
I like Wiig some of the time, but she's better in supporting roles
So maybe like Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, Wiig, and a non-comedian like Kerry Washington, idk
I mean, hell, if it was the whole Parks and Rec cast (Poehler, Jones, Plaza, and Retta) I'd be way more psyched

but its mainly Feig and McCarthy that I just strongly don't care for, and the two SNL-ers schtick gets tiring quickly

Pretty much McCarthy is Ray, Wiig is Egon, McKinnon is Peter and Leslie is Winston. That is what I got from this.

Looks like the sequel to Pixels. I can't believe Tom Rothman moved forward with this.

I understand that SNL has fallen pretty far, but I still get a laugh about complaints about a Ghostbusters film having SNL people.

They don't really have a character for character analog like that. McKinnon is an amazing mad scientist type, that is a funny, flirty, pansexual nut job. She is like a steam punk Egon with tons of personality. The only character that you can say oh, this character is like that character is Patti...she is filling in the working class everyman slot that Winston filled.

You know it's funny I wouldve put Retta and PLaza in this.
I probably wouldve gone Constance Wu (From "Fresh Off the Boat"), Retta, Plaza, and Kaitlin Olson (from It's Always Sunny). Maybe Rashida Jones too.
Kerry Washington can actually be pretty funny too so if she couldve taken the time out of Scandal that wouldve been cool to see her in this.

I like Wiig and I think McCarthy can be REALLY funny with the right material. I liked her in Bridesmaids and loved her in The HEat. But just doesn't look good.

So no personas aside from just acting wacky?

I'm going to show this trailer to my sister because she likes Paul Feig's films a lot. If she doesn't laugh then I know something is up.

yeah no, there's nothing wrong or ironic about it
SNL sucks horribly right now, and has a much lower caliber of comedians than years past
I'm not saying they suck because they're on SNL, but rather that they are part of the current, s***ty SNL-crew (Amy Poehler, who I also suggested, was an SNL-er during a better era)

That's not what I said.

Holtzman is kind of insane, brilliant but insane. She is sarcastic. She isn't afraid of her sexuality, very comfortable in her own skin. Loves her equipment and is constantly thinking about how to make it work better, be more portable and more powerful.

Wiig's character is struggling to be taken seriously. She is awkward, vulnerable and is very uncomfortable in her own skin. She is ashamed of her past and has been made fun of her whole life for her belief in ghosts.

McCarthy is invested and determined in her beliefs. Her and Wiig's character don't see eye to eye about their previous work together.

Jones' character is kind and tries to greet passengers on the subway. She tries to engage people and is a very positive person...though she is sassy when she feels like she is being disrespected. She is well read and street smart, but not educated.

I am not in any way, shape, or form a "Paul Feig fanboy", nor am I particularly enamored (as I noted earlier) with these actresses and their particular brand(s) of comedy(I do recognize that they have talent and appeal, but they're not typically my cup of tea), but I'm still looking forward to this movie because I like what it's offering in terms of story and visuals. I also gave the trailer a second watch-through and was won over by the bits of humor that were included in it, so it passes the "humor test", at least initially. We'll see what happens in the long run, but I do still think this will end up being a Men in Black 3 situation where the film ends up being better than critical reception says that it is and does successfully relaunch the franchise.

Regarding parallels between this new group of characters and the OG Ghostbusters, I personally see Wiig's Erin as the Venkman analogue, McCarthy's Abby as the Ray analogue, McKinnon's Holtzmann as the Egon analogue, and Jones' Patty as the Winston analogue mixed with the comedic personality traits of Ray.

Thanks, needed some clarity.

I like your thoughts, I'll add as well;

Poehler, Plaza, Brie, Larson, the little girl from Justified/Short Term 12, Hit-Girl, Gillian Jacobs, Zoey Kazan, a Mara sister, so many better choices...

I feel like if one of them wasn't a comedian it gives off a slightly better dynamic.

Looks closer to Scooby-Doo Doo than it does the original Ghostbusters.

Maybe it's the lame ghost SFX or the lazy jokes. I dunno.

I like the MIB3 comparison. It may very well be the case here.

Given that I happen to firmly believe that the first Scooby Doo film is a cult classic and the very definition of "guilty pleasure", I'll gladly take comparisons between that film and this new Ghostbusters.

I like the MIB3 comparison. It may very well be the case here.

MiB 3 is a much better movie than critical reception indicates, and financially outgrossed both of its predecessors. It also recaptured the fun of the original MiB without feeling repetitive.

This new GB film is probably going to perform similarly just based on the general audience appeal of the people involved (which is considerable even if I personally don't like their particular brand of comedy), but it's also fortunate that, like MiB 3, indications are that it has a story that's going to deliver for the people who might not particularly like the individuals involved but are interested in seeing the movie for other reasons.

Men in Black 3 didn't successfully relaunch anything. It came out in 2012 and last year was when we actually started hearing serious tallk of a sequel. If it was big hit 4 would have already been out by now. Sony needs franchises outside of Spider-Man and Jump Street. That's why they're trying MIB again.
