The New Ghostbusters - Part 6

What's McKinnon from? This whole time I have seen all this praise for her but I have no idea why. What is she known for?

I will say that I dug the remix of the Ghostbusters theme.

Also, if Leslie Jones wasn't in this, I would have automatically liked the trailer more.

I'll say. She's terrible on SNL and her cliche character here isn't helping at all.

They have had years to make new Ghostbusters movie and this is the result. The trailer wasn't completely terrible but I just wish this movie didn't exist. They had so many years to make a sequel and for some reason it didn't happen. :(

The movie MIGHT be good but IMO that trailer sucked. I hope its a poor representation of the film. It was so predictable and boring. I have no interest in this film failing and have wanted the best for it since I heard about it.. But damn. Stinker trailer

This might bomb worse than Fantastic Four. The trajectory is heading that way, one (small) good stroke of fortune is that it opens a week before some other big titles and a couple weeks after some others like BFG and Tarzan so there's a small window to be the center of attention for the chronic, habitual movie goer.

A financial disaster filled with public scrutiny is what is deserved when you take into account the genesis of this stinker, how the creators reacted to the initial negativity and how it's been obvious all along that the studio took a beloved franchise and superimposed it with a bunch of inorganic, forced progressive messages.

Movies with political themes and social commentary are always welcomed by me but when that blatantly extends beyond the actual world of the movie and its plot, people are quick to diagnose the stink as has been the case here all along. Aside from looking like a crappy comedy that hijacked a recognizable title with a built in fan base, many people simply don't appreciate their subliminal programming from media to be so overt; the producers and director may as well cameo too and have lines about their personal opinions and politics while staring directly into the camera.

A few questions:

1) As of now, is it the movie whose official trailer has the highest dislike/like ratio on youtube? Does anyone know any other movies that share the same "glory"?

2) It seems that Sony is deleting tons of comments for the trailer on youtube. I don't ever recall any film company doing that even though I have seen some really harsh comments on other movie trailers on youtube before.

3) If you were Sony, would you release another trailer before its launch? It is a tough one. I really don't know what I should do if it were up to me.

1.) Not a movie, but I remember their being one of the Call of Duty releases that scored something like an abysmal score on Metacritic because people were tired of the same game being released over and over again with a new coat of paint. It still went on to make tons of money and the franchise lives on.

Funny story, I didn't even notice the dislikes when I watched the trailer. I've gotten so used to reading nothing but ******* comments on pretty much everything I see that I ignore them. I think a lot of people will just watch the trailer and not even notice the likes/dislikes ratio. I mostly see it being brought up by people wanting the film to bomb. I dwell in the muckiness of the boards, but the general audience, best characterized by my wife just says cut it off, I want to see it.

2.)They are deleting comments, but they are the really, really hateful ones. Seriously, there is some jacked up crap being said that should not be read by anyone. And that gives us a clue of the kind of people hitting the dislike button. This kind of thing happens all the time with big studios. The fact that there are still a ton of negative comments shows that their priority isn't just deleting those who don't agree with the movie. Wouldn't be much of a comment section if they did.

3.)They will definitely release another trailer. A good example is when the first teaser for BvS hit. It certainly wasn't 'hated' like this one, but it caused mixed feelings, myself included, and did more to damper hopes in the film than build them. Then came Trailer 2 and many were like, "Hell yeah!" Each trailer they release has a different feel.

I honestly believe the problem with this trailer is that Feig is trying too hard and relying too much on trailer testing to choose what to put out there. They new this was an important first reveal and didn't muck it up. However, they threw too much in, didn't say enough about the stories or the characters and had to put that whole "30 years ago" thing that I think hurt more than helped. Feig needs to go with his gut and release a trailer that conveys what he feels this movie is about and stop worrying about pleasing all the fans. It's not going to happen. Leave the nods to the original for our theater viewing and focus on what your film is about.

It's not a spectacular trailer, but too many people are holding the GB franchise close to the chest and I think that causes this kind of reaction. I can understand not finding things you love or like in the trailer, even dislike. But there is nothing I saw that should cause the blind rage I've seen.

I always wonder if in some parallel dimension the Sony email leaks never happened and people never saw behind the scenes stuff that happens for nearly every film, but treated it like this only happened to our beloved Ghostbusters. Maybe the hate would not be so strong because it was not known that it only existed make money... like every movie in Hollywood.

There's a lot of emails out there that show a company desperate for a hit and doing anything to get Ghostbusters made. There are also a lot of emails showing that Paul Feig has a lot of respect for Reitman and the franchise and the fans and was wanting to make his best attempt at Ghostbusters. He never once said that he didn't like Ghostbusters or that he wanted to cut out Reitman. He said that he didn't want to do a sequel 30 years later where ghosts were commonplace and wanted Reitman to understand that he was doing is own thing and carrying on his own vision. He's met with Reitman, a member on the boards here saw a test screening with Reitman and shared that he was smiling and laughing at the film and seemed to enjoy it.

I don't care if this movie is freaking' amazing. It won't matter. Starting with the email leaks it was never really given a fair chance to succeed since the very beginning and people made up their minds before the first proton pack was seen. And so therefore everything released afterwards 'confirms' why they've 'already' hated it. Heck, this is the first time I've seen people just as excited to hate a film as those excited to see it. It makes no sense!

Seeing this trailer was odd.

It’s like going to a place you and your ex girlfriend always go to and then you see your ex there but now she’s with a woman because it turns out she’s gay. And you’re like, “Oh. This is all familiar. But it’s not the same. But also women now. Okay. I'm gonna leave. ”

Times Square appears to be reverting into an older version. Wonder if there is a link to the original after all. What if Feig pulled off a '21 Jump Street' scenario and in the end it turns out that this is connected to the original, but only here it's like a parallel universe or something :funny:. Or maybe the whole city is just a ghost. Oh well.

Anyway, I still think the movie looks good. It's just the trailer didn't really have a lot of jokes.

She's one of the players on SNL.

Maybe it will turn into a nod to the audience. Notice Ghosts are popping up as the scenery changes

Wiig- Looks like they're changing it.

Mccarthy- I guess they preferred it to look a certain way....

It would be a hilarious nod if we see another universe with the four guys circa 1984 in it.

I don't even know what Sony does after this. No-one could have foreseen this level of negative response, not even the most harden critics of this reboot would have imagined this. I cant help but think that maybe the studio completely misjudged the difficulty they were going to have to overcome in getting people on board with this movie and the trailer just completely amplified that problem tenfold.

You clearly haven't been paying attention. The attitude towards this was rivaling FF before the trailer.

Some of these "This is just a stunt because they're women" arguments are a little shaky.

Where on Earth does this trailer indicate that this movie is about gender? I see a story about four women who are paranormal investigators, not just a movie about four women. Nothing in the trailers, aside from maybe their costumes and the wig scene, is all that gender-specific.

Aside from people who just don't like it, why is this "gimmick" even an issue in context?
The very act of making a movie is essentially a moneymaking stunt. Hollywood makes movies to make money. The original GHOSTBUSTERS was, in itself, something of a gimmick as well. Why does this matter in the grand scheme of things?

I do think that this trailer was the introduction of a lot of people to Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, and this could be a major breakout film for them. Not everyone watches SNL.

I hadn't noticed that.
Neat!

Definitely turning into the 70's with the the posters for Taxi Driver & Isle of the Snake People

Apart from the obvious problems, especially with the Jones character, none of these characters are believable that they're scientists. The originals made you believe Egon, Ray and Peter were college scientists. Even Peter, who got called out on it by Dana (a game show host) was believable when it came down to it.

The original movie made you believe they were scientists because they SHOWED them as scientists. We haven't even seen the specifics of them as scientists yet. How can we make a determination on whether they're believable in context of being experts in their field or not?

What exactly isn't believeable about it thus far?

The way they look? The way they act?

Since when did scientists have to look or act a certain way?

And who says Leslie Jones is a scientist? It looks like she works a blue collar job, and her dialogue suggests that she is not a scientist.

Someone made a recut of the trailer:

[YT]s5182ezO3Tw[/YT]

I for the most part think it works better than the official one.

As for the film itself, i didn't find anything in the trailer funny, but then again, a similar thing happened with me for the other Paul Feig films. Also like the look of the ghosts, i think the vibrant look of it is actualy quite close to the original and fits with the tone. Some of the ghosts also look like they're going to be scarier in the film. It's not as if the original film had that many moody ghosts besides the things with the dog keeper, the trailer's just showing the type of ghost that's going to appear the most, and just like in the originals, they're going to be a bit colorful.

The ironic thing is the moronic knuckle draggers who couldn't get past the casts gender has gave Sony a get outta jail free card if the film tanks

They just have to say the backlash was influenced and driven by sexists and not the films quality.

And from those I've talked to who have actually seen a screen test, there gender barely comes up in the film. It won't be like the first few episodes of Supergirl where we were constantly reminded that she is, in fact, a female and that being a female is tough! They're just paranormal investigators saving the world and just happen to be girls.

I know this isn't true for everyone, but the whole calling a movie with female leads a gimmick is, well, kinda sexist.

The lame exposition already there in the trailer. D

Eh. I think you're giving the fanboy community too much credit. Unless the critics and media turn on this film a LOT, which so far they have not done, I don't think a vocal subset of fans hating something is going to make the general audience forget how funny and entertaining they thought various comedies with these women in it were. These are well known comedic personalities, with a proven track record of success.

What I'm most excited to see on July 15th is this whole climax in its final form. The version I saw had this scene, but it was just the four of them on a soundstage with the ghost army on the ground and a lot of green screen. The ghost were all in different period costumes from pilgrims to Italian gangsters and flapper girls. They had strings of LEDs on them and there was a lot of wire work.

The lame exposition already there in the trailer. D

What does that even mean?

You're going to base your assessment of whether the portrayals of them as scientists, mathematicians and engineers are effective on the trailer's basic and rather limited expositional explanation of the character's roles within the team?

We see the math Wiig's character does...we see the things McKinnon's character has built throughout the trailer...

What exactly isn't believable, based on the limited information we have?
