The New Ghostbusters - Part 6

I think this trailer has confused a lot of people. We've been told time and time again since the announcement of this movie began that it would be a reboot and not a continuation, but now after seeing the trailer people are starting to think that maybe that was a little bit of a ruse to throw people off.

None of us really know for sure, or will know until the movie comes out; but I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being true.
I know for sure...well...Unless they refilm fairly large portions of the movie then this is not a continuation.

It was a misleading intro for sure.

Honestly, all the issues and comments regarding this trailer and film in general are kind of merging into one - over all, it wasn't positively received.

I think regarding Leslie Jones - we didn't get anything new from her, this just seems like another one of her angry SNL skits. People jumping on band wagon saying she should have been a scientist too etc i don't get it. It seems like they just have an agenda. Her timing was poor also. She literally is playing her usual self, where the general audience are concerned.
Regarding Wiig, her jokes were terrible, her look, that was terribly cliche - do all scientists dress like that? The slime in every crack joke - to quote Ricky Gervais 'that made me think of your vagina'.
The exorcist moment - terrible - skin and bone would never recover after that. Plus MM just looked annoying.
Thor as receptionist - it just looked like a big 'F you' to fan boys and blokes in general - which, no one really cares about - it's like Feig thought - 'hmmm i got a fan favourite leading man here, tell you what, i'll make him a secretary - just to because i can and oh, women are funnier' which again, people shouldn't and hopefully don't care about, if the character is well written, then fine.

McKinnon's character looks like she has been lifted straight from extreme ghost busters and i love it - minus the gun licking, a kiss would have worked better. The ghosts, started off good - no wonder, it was an unoriginal homage to the library scene - in the city they look like scooby foo ghosts - what is that all about, where do you ever see ghosts like that?

So with that in mind, let's quickly see if i can write up a better pitch? just to show that originality at least, is better than a straight rip off.
Let's say McKinnon, she is Egon's niece, has her whole life worshipped his work and carried it on, in secret with contact from Ray. The government have sealed up the files, ghostbusters is no more, life moves on.
Her lab partner, the straight up smart and beautiful (played by Esther Ku) work together when they discover the 'McGuffin'. Probably due to so much wifi, technology around, that another dimension or portal is opened up. Maybe with what they are doing, or were doing in switzerland with CERN.

With the help of their lecturer (played by Rainn Wilson) and paranormal buff (played by Adam Scott) - joined by every man (played by Terry Crews) and receptionist (played by Maya rudolph) and cameo's by Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson you have
'Extreme Ghostbusters'.

Jango, your stance seems to be "just ignore the internet because a majority are just haters." I think what happened with Fantastic Four speaks volumes about internet criticism. The internet gave the world a mouth and if 90% says it's garbage, they may want to change the strategy.

It's hard to ignore the haters when I speak to many of them everyday on various forms. You know me on GB Fans, too, and see more than just my comments here. When people exageratively put down the film, I'm going to ignore it. When someone gives objective criticism, I'm more willing to engage. Most of what I've been reading on Youtube comments is just nonsense. Some of it is downright hateful. I'm not going to pay that much time. Heck, aside from a bunch of new accounts that popped up after the trailer to call it crap, the mood has begun to change at GB Fans since the trailer. Raystantz Italy wants to give it a chance and likes what he sees despite acknowleding it's going to be a reboot. That's a miracle!

Anyone else notice that the one scene where they had all the equipment look just like the inside of the firehouse? Maybe that's why they showed the firehouse in the beginning, besides nostalgia, it maybe where they start at first before the chinese restaurant.

Close.

It looks sort of a cluttered, workstation version of the firehouse basement.

I would imagine if anything they'll start at the chinese restaurant and then move into the firehouse later on.

Sounds Correct.

We haven't seen much of the inside of the Chinese restaurant. I wonder if that's the main headquarters and the firehouse is the testing ground for tech. We know the Ecto spends some of the time at the garage next to the restaurant, but I noticed it was no where to be seen in the firehouse.

Which is what most actors, especially comedic actors, do, in their first few films. Play to their strengths.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this her first major film role. She's probably not established enough yet to land roles much outside what she is known for, nor would it be advantangeous from a marketing standpoint to suddenly present something other than what people like her for from SNL.

That said, it's kind of silly to believe that the few sequences we see in the trailer is all the range her character will have.

Regarding Wiig, her jokes were terrible, her look, that was terribly cliche - do all scientists dress like that?

...

They're probably just shooting for a kind of "less than fashion-conscious professor" look, much like the guys had in the original.

How can a style of clothing be cliche?

Why is something like this even an issue?

The nitpicking in here is so hyperbolic.

The teasing! It seems the info is burning a hole in your brain and wants to be let out. Be careful with that NDA.
It would be a shame to get a Cease and Desist letter and to never be invited to a Sony test screening again.

I won't tell if you won't! :cwink:

I'm not really wanting spoilers, anyway. It's just comforting to have heard from one of the very few that has seen a screen test for the film and for their response to be positive.

Not sure if I will go and see this at the cinema, but to be fair, I'd watch Kristen Wiig in any film. Given my love for the original and I saw it at 9, I'm not sure as 41 year old man I'm gonna enjoy it as much, re-boot or not, all female cast or not.

People are putting the 'nostaglia', rose tinted specs point to all this, it's not, I don't think, I think it's purely it simply doesn't look as well made or as funny or capture the same 'spirit' (excuse the pun) as that moment of cinema history or freshness, the 80's was a decade of real adventure, fun and exploration in film and trying to 'recapture' the vibe simply cannot be done. How could it, we are 30+ years on from that time.

Wow, I really like that idea of yours, Vaibow. That sounds alot better than this movie. That said, I'm still going to give this movie a chance, though I've never been a fan of Paul Feig's work.

I'm really curious about something. Like, this is genuine curiosity. I've never paid attention to anything below a YouTube video before. I watch the video and get out. But because people are pointing out the astronomical amount of dislikes for the video (whew there are a lot of them) I decided to take a look at it and a trailer for another movie coming out soon that folks are looking forward to...Batman v Superman. Right now Ghostbusters has nearly 275,000 dislikes (yikes!). Comparatively, Batman v Superman 14,252 dislikes. Interesting considering MOS was not the most well received film, but that seems average.

Here's where my question comes in. I chose trailer #2 for BvS since it was one of the better received ones (and didn't have Doomsday reveals) and noticed it has 168,423 likes and has been viewed nearly 25 million times. It was released back in December and has had time build those numbers. Now we look at the numbers for Ghostbusters and see that it has 144,530 likes and, already 15 million views. That's just after, what, two days?

I don't ever follow these things, so without doing some hardcore research (which I don't really care to do) I don't know what the significance of this is. Already this has more dislikes than most anything I've seen. Something about this has motivated folks to campaign against this. I know that this boils down to misogyny, hate for reboots, genuine criticisms of effects and style, etc etc. It's varied, I know, though the first comment I read was "This is so Gay!" and that gives you a hint as what mostly is to follow. We've discussed in detail what the dislikes and negative reception can do to this film, but this trailer is being watched by a lot of folks and actually has a good amount of likes for a film that's reviving a movie franchise dormant since '89 (not including comics and EGB). In fact, it's tracking right up there with Batman v Superman in those categories.

People call me out for burying my head in the sand. I'm not ignoring the humongous negatives, at least on YouTube. But are we just supposed to ignore the other numbers, too? For those who follow this stuff, what is your take to help me understand?

Because others have mentioned it, F4NTASTIC's last trailer received a bit over 3 million views, 2,886 likes and 704 dislikes. No where near the hatred for new GB on YouTube, but also doesn't come close to the interest people seem to have for new GB.

No publicity is bad publicity.

And still, less than 2% who viewed the trailer have disliked it.

They check out the firehouse at first, Ernie Hudson's cameo is a real estate agent that shows them the place. Sadly, it's out of their price range so they rent part of a Chinese restaurant at first. I'd imagine it'd be WAY more expensive to rent out the upstairs of the restaurant and then rent out the giant firehouse just for a garage testing ground. After they kickstart the business they'll get the firehouse. I'm just pulling this from the outline and news leaks, so I haven't seen any test screenings.

Yeah, I read those, too. I'm excited to see images of them in it. I'll be patient for July to iron out all the details. Thanks!

Most definitely. I'm excited to see where it all leads.

Check out the CA: Civil War trailer stats. Geez, that movie is going to make some money. GB isn't coming anywhere near that. Whether or not GB is a good film or bad film will matter, though. I'd imagine some will see it just to know what the fuss is about. That'll help if it's good. If it's not...

The trailer has become very "popular" for being awful.

Im 37, I grew up on the original, and I support this film

people are going to complain

some are going to wrap a ton of reasons (I hate remakes, I dont like this) around their hatred of women

some will never be happy with remakes

The problem this movie has caused now is it's making people on all sides look bad. You've got the sexists being called out for their offence remarks, you've got fans being called out for being whiny because they're remaking the film in the first place, you've got feminists being called out for saying everyone who doesn't like the trailer is misogynistic, and you've non-white people being called out for being overly sensitive about Leslie Jones' character. Everyone is arguing with everyone else for a variety of reasons over this film. To top it all off, the trailer for a lot of people just flat out wasn't funny. This is frankly the most unprecedented level of negativity for a film I've ever seen. It's easy to say there's no such thing as bad publicity, but there's bad publicity, and then there's this train wreck where the market team have to somehow win a lot of people back.
