The New Ghostbusters - Part 7

You can have a sequel without having to bring back the original cast. "Ghostbusters" is a business. At a certain point, people retire and newer generations come in.

I get that people love the original cast, but there's an opportunity to bring in new faces and make a whole new generation of people fall in love with the property.

I don't think there'd be this much of a backlash if THAT was the route they went, but they didn't. They wanted to wipe the slate clean and start over.

By the way, they just completed reshoots over the weekend:

I had no idea about the amount of dislikes the trailer had on YouTube. That is crazy.

It's not like the sequel was reviled or anything. It was just very 'meh' and by the books.

Hell, you've got some fans (myself for example) that actually thinks its pretty damn good. Safe, but good.

I really enjoy Ghostbusters 2 a lot as well. I don't hate it or think it's meh like most of the fans seem to.

I caught part of Ghostbusters 2 on MTV the other day. Obviously no where near the original, but It's still enjoyable.

Sigh... went to watch Civil War, the Trailer came up, and my sister said "Hey, let's watch that.".

Most dislikes for a movie? ouch.

No that I didn't see it coming.

The thing about Ghostbusters 2, is in 1989 it opened a week before Batman. It very quickly got lost in the shadow of the bat, then sort of fell off the movie map in the following weeks.

I think that's why so many have the notion that it isn't good, even though it was one of the ten biggest films of the year.

I love Ghostbusters 1 & 2. Sure I'll agree Ghostbusters 1 is the best of the two, but both are great films in my opinion! love them both.

I have the feeling that after Feig's Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II will be remembered even more fondly.

Growing up I had no idea GB2 was a lesser film. I loved them both. It was only much later that I heard the criticisms. Some are valid, it's not the lightning in a bottle the first was but there are a ton of great scenes and moments.

My biggest gripe is Harold Ramis to be honest. He doesn't seem to be in character in a lot of scenes. Too smiley. The "doe, ray, Egon!" gag is pretty cringe-worthy.

Did you say No? Or did you say "We will, but when it comes on TV"?

Maybe the joke is too dumb, but I like the fact that Egon seems to be a lot more comfortable being a Ghostbuster. In the first one he was all worried about the equipment and all that, but in that little scene you can see that he is still a good scientist (the rest of the film demonstrates that) but still capable of having fun.
And is not like he was all serious in the first one, remember in the hotel after they catch the ghost he is telling Peter with his fingers how much to charge the guy.

Melissa McCarthy: 'Ghostbusters' Trailer "Very Confusing"
After the trailer for the reboot was voted as one of the most disliked YouTube videos ever, McCarthy confessed that it didn't really convey the story properly.
Abid Rahman said:
In the wake of the Ghostbusters trailer being voted as one of the most disliked in YouTube history, one of the stars of the Sony reboot acknowledged the early promo clips were "very confusing."

As a guest on The Johnjay & Rich Show, Melissa McCarthy addressed the issues surrounding the trailer. "It's a reboot, not a remake. I know it's weird that they say [in the trailer] "30 years ago," but in this movie it's like the first one didn't happen," said the Spy star on what the new all-female interpretation of Ghostbusters really was.

She then outlined how the story was broadly the same in the reboot as the original. "It's a great story but told totally differently. It's the same thing of four unlikely heroes, it's in New York city, ghosts are taking over. It's the same classic story, but it's not a '30 years later,' " she said.

Asked if she thought it was confusing, McCarthy agreed and revealed that she had raised some questions about it. "Believe me, the question was asked. I think it's very confusing."

She added humorously: "But then everyone said, 'We don't care what you think.' "

I think he got perma-banned.

But what did he say in here?

I wasn't a fan of the trailer, but I'll admit the number of dislikes is a little extreme. It wasn't THAT bad and there have been many reboots (or even many original movies/blockbusters) that looked far worse than this.

But what did he say in here?

That he sternly believed this was a sequel, even though it's been stated by the cast/crew/studio that it's a reboot.

But what did he say in here?

He kept on saying that his was indeed a sequel to the original two films. He also blasted anyone that disliked what they were seeing and anyone expressing their opinions on how they felt were labeled sexist, racist and etc.
He was always right. It got old very quickly.

Indy and Star Wars got sequels, but I don't think there has been anything on the level of Ghostbusters popularity remade. GB made more then BTTF in the 80s, and holds an extremely large and loyal fanbase. Nobody wanted to see it radically changed in tone and feel, and that's the main issue. There was really no way 80s and 90s kids were gonna welcome changes like ditching the characters in the first place.

A film like this had to look great through marketing. Instead it looks more like a parody. This thing is gonna get thrashed more then any other reboot due to it's fanbase and popularity being significantly larger then all the others. This is close to the level of remaking something like ET, Jaws or BTTF. Got to bring back what people liked or else there's trouble.

I had no idea the Ghostbusters fanbase was that huge. I understand it's one of the most iconic 80s films but there are many iconic films in any given decade. I disagree that this film is hated so much because of this huge, devoted fanbase. It's Ghostbusters, a franchise that followed it's iconic film with a crappy sequel, an 80s cartoon, and a horrible 90s cartoon. I'll debate with anyone in this thread about this supposedly huge fanbase that has remained dormant for over 20 years.

I feel the backlash is more so linked to general principle. Nobody enjoys when a reboot to a film is such an obvious bastardization of the original classic. Like def28 said, the trailer of the film makes it look like a parody and because of that, it's going to be viewed as disrespectful. I'm willing to bet there are people who haven't even seen the original film that still knows that the reboot looks completely different. Nobody knows how the film will be but the marketing team s*** the bed entirely. There will be seminars on how not to approach and market a reboot because of how unprecedented this is.

I agree with your second paragraph alot and still think the quality and going against the source is what's to blame the most. But I do think having a remake of a classic that such a large audience watched has not really happened before. It's not like Conan, Robocop, Poltergeist, Planet Of The Apes, Footlose, Evil Dead or even Star Trek. Ghostbusters sits on the 34th adjusted of all time and was the 6th highest grosser of the 80s behind ET, Star Wars and Indy. That's around 600m Avenger level ticket sales for today.

It's a huge fanbase in the sense that pretty much everyone grew up with the film and loved the heck out of it. The flick has hung around one way or the other and goes beyond the diehard fan demo much more so then other reboots. Bigger audience, more hate.
