The New Ghostbusters - Part 7

Is Gozer in this new movie? It was really cool when she/it shot those energy beams at the ghostbusters and later flip around over them. You did not see things like that in 80s movies.

I agree with your second paragraph alot and still think the quality and going against the source is what's to blame the most. But I do think having a remake of a classic that such a large audience watched has not really happened before. It's not like Conan, Robocop, Poltergeist, Planet Of The Apes, Footlose, Evil Dead or even Star Trek. Ghostbusters sits on the 34th adjusted of all time and was the 6th highest grosser of the 80s behind ET, Star Wars and Indy. That's around 600m Avenger level ticket sales for today.

It's a huge fanbase in the sense that pretty much everyone grew up with the film and loved the heck out of it. The flick has hung around one way or the other and goes beyond the diehard fan demo much more so then other reboots. Bigger audience, more hate.

That's a great point. And you're right. There has yet to be a film as commercially successful as this that's been remade so far. Though judging on the box office of this, we might not get one again for quite some time. I've always been of the opinion that remakes should always be for films that were either bad and/or can benefit from being made today (The Day the Earth Stood Still and Clash of the Titans for example, even though they sucked).

I have no idea what will happen in July when this movie hits. But I do think we have a very interesting situation here. We have a movie with a lot of dislikes on YouTube, an amount that screams people campaigning against the film. I know for a fact people are making new accounts just to dislike the thing. I've read it in the comments and it's bizarre to me. Why care so much?

But the rub is that the trailer has 30,000,000 views. The dislikes make up 2% of viewers, the likes are even less, and the rest of the viewership is up in the air. And the irony is that the dislike has kept this movie in the spotlight better than most films. Right now it's anyone's guess as to how this will turn out. My assumption is that the dislikes will create a lot of curiosity for the GA. People will see this to find out if it deserves to be disliked so much, people will see it to support a female led comedy (Fandango found it voted as most anticipated comedy), some will see it to confirm if it's the garbage they want it to be, and some will see it because of the name Ghostbusters. Not all of the fan base is against it and, considering how little the last rerelease of GB in theaters made, it's not as big or necessary for the film to succeed as some would have you believe. All of these factors could line up to make the new film a hit...if it's good, because people will be checking it out.

I can't declare it success or failure because we still know little more than what a trailer that even its star found confusing. Like any movie, it will depend on the merit of the film. But I wouldn't be surprised if all this attention causes the BO to surprise us.

the trailer sucked. the actresses are funny no doubt. but ghostbusters remember that 80s flick?

No Gozer, but there is a reference to Zuul.

Agreed

With a few of the franchises that have gone on for awhile like Star Wars, keeping that original aesthetic and tone is pretty crucial. Using modern tech to enhance what originally worked like Force Awakens did beautifully hits the right note. Mad Max did this top notch too. But put aliens and goofy CGI set pieces in Inidana Jones and it just feels wrong immediately to the audience. Takes us out of the world.

With this film the humor, look and tone just doesn't fit with the originals.

The sad thing is Feig is a critical darling. Originally, I was super optimistic. I think he even said this film would have some genuinely horror in there. I was looking forward to that.

I never believed this film could flop until i read about how many disliked the last trailer and now i ain't to sure, it really didn't agree with people at all.

Personally if this was gonna be done i think it should have been set in the same universe as the Original ghostbusters because we are getting a rebooted universe here that apparently is allowed to use every bit of nostalgia from the original film

over 600k+ dislikes is a LOT of fake accounts that I can't fathom actually being created, Jango. It's called fandom, in this case more than just a handful of people loved the original films and grew up with the cartoon. This film is pretending like they didn't exist. You'll just have to understand the angry fans and ignore the sexists.

"At one point Leslie Jones’ character who no kidding shouts every single line in the movie"

God I hate her and her whole shtick/humor.

and with this gem in it

Don’t let anybody ever tell you what kind of ***** you are! Honey you be the ***** you want to be!”

way to inspire little girls by telling them they could be any ***** they want :whatever:

Ultimately they should have Force Awakened this movie and had the old cast handing the reigns off to the new cast in a story that incorporated both, rather then trying to do a "conceptual remake" of the first movie that will only fail like the Robocop remake did.

Because that was working for the past 20 years...

Even if Dan Aykroyd was the only person from the old cast who wanted to show up they still should've done a continuation.

I am not talking about Ghostbusters 3. I am talking about a Ghostbusters movie with a new cast that has the history of the previous movies. That would always work better than a "conceptual" remake that tries to pretend a new cast is the first ones that encounter and busts ghosts.

People call Force Awakens a New Hope remake but at least that movie didn't try to insult my intelligence and pretend it was the first Star Wars movie ever made and that the characters from the original trilogy never existed.

That's what I was hoping for honestly

It's bad when even during an interview one of the female cast members was like "yeah I don't know why they put 30 years later a new team in the trailer"

Yep, pretty much this.

Yeah, Feig is great. Shame this looks as bad as it does. They definitely needed some creepy horror atmosphere going on in the marketing.

Ugh wow. She's the worst. Not funny in the least.

You would've definitely gotten Dan Akroyd, and Ernie Hudson for an extension of the Universe. For years they said it was Bill Murray as the hold out,and quite honestly they could've moved forward without him.

For as great as his character in the films was, he was more the psuedo-science end of things looking to make a quick buck and impress the girl. Part of the new team could've easily provided that dynamic.

I agree with him on how we are a bunch of a-holes but he's not helping anything.

Yup, Blackman I agree. Honestly he is correct! I see it every day on here and on other sites etc. That comment sure wont help him any, but I do agree with him, and I'm not even a supporter of this film :gngl:

Dude just needs to shake it off and let the movie do the talking. For better or for worse.

That's what most other director's do when they're adapted a beloved franchise

Eh, I disagree with him. He keeps going back to the gender thing like that's the entire reason why his trailer was disliked so much. If he made a great trailer that spoke to the fans, it would've shut up all of the haters, but instead, it was a horrible trailer that didn't match the tone of the original, and he keeps throwing fuel on the fire and acting like it's our fault that his movie looks bad.
